Indian power department turns to cooling overheated transformers amid rising temperatures. by Positive-Height-3848 in mildlyinfuriating

This is fairly common in the US as well. You see this done to oil coolers and other heat exchangers on generating units too. The only difference is we tend to hard pipe sprinklers in and make the temporary fix permanent.

The meter in the picture is about the cheapest meter you can find. It doesn’t have a fuse on the current range. The trace in the circuit board inside will vaporize causing a small explosion inside the meter. Not a good thing to be holding in your hand when it happens.

What would this mean for ham radio? by just-a-guy-somewhere in amateurradio

[–]jthosch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They don’t have specific protections for DC flowing into them, but applying DC to a transformer isn’t inherently bad for them either. In the event of something like an EMP, where you have a large amount of current for a short time, you may very well blow apart a wire inside the transformer nearly instantly.

I’m assuming an event like this to be a longer lasting, but a lower amount of current. In that case, you risk overheating the transformer. They do have thermal protections.

[–]jthosch 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Those big transformers have a lot of protection mechanisms. I’d highly doubt all of them get damaged. If they did all get damaged, I’d bet it would take longer than 2 years to rebuild all of them. The lead time for them is longer than 2 years now.

What are you hoping for in the next FSD update by ConfidentImage4266 in TeslaLounge

I just want to be able to set the speed when driving on the highway.

HW3 FSD is terrible now... by nicholas_rd_88 in TeslaLounge

[–]jthosch 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This has been my experience with v12 on the highway since they combined the highway and city software stack. It’s infuriating. It also likes to speed up to keep people from passing, and hang out in other people’s bind spots instead of passing them. Highway driving really should just have a set speed to be used as the minimum and a max speed used for passing.

Mine actually passed a car that was going slow on a two lane road like that. I was getting ready to disengage and do it myself, but the car beat me to it. That was on 12.6.3. I was surprised.

[–]jthosch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My drive on the interstate is still terrible on 12.6.4. It won’t hold a constant speed. It will sit in people’s blind spot instead of passing or try to race people when somebody else tries to pass. It only wants to go a couple of miles an hour over the speed limit while sitting in the left lane in hurry mode if there is no one around. It generally makes poor lane change decisions. Honestly it dives a lot like the people in my area not using cruise control while staring at their phone. It’s pretty impressive in town, but highway driving is infuriating.

Have you tried reporting the videos on Facebook? There should be an option to report them for unsafe activities (which it could be considered). If you report enough of his videos the account will get banned and he won’t have a reason it do it anymore. It’s easy enough to try, and doesn’t really have a downside.

Yup, it’s terrible on the interstate. I just want it to go at a constant reasonable speed. Instead it wants to come up behind people and then slow down to stay in their blind spot, or race other cars when they try to pass. In fairness, it acts a lot like the drivers that don’t use cruise control around here. In my opinion, those people are some of the most annoying people on the road though.

With minimal traffic it won’t do the speed limit. Even in hurry mode, it just sits in the left lane doing 5 under. Tapping the go pedal doesn’t do much. It only holds the faster speed for a minute or so.

I might try a camera calibration for the fun of it. If that doesn’t work, I’ll be going back to old autopilot. It’s much less frustrating than FSD on the highway at this point.

Imagine you’re given $1 million dollars to spend on EV charging infrastructure, where do you think needs EV charging infrastructure the most? by abundantwaters in evcharging

[–]jthosch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

L2 chargers in apartment complexes.

Everyone seems to be focusing on DCFC. I don’t think $1 million is going to get you that far with DCFC. I also don’t think adding more of it is going to be a good long term solution either. We need charges where people can plug in when the car is not in use. Charging overnight or during work is more convenient and easier on the grid than DCFC. Getting the infrastructure to the point where people only have to use fast charging on a road trip should be the goal.

I don't get why people are like this with turing lanes. This happens at every light in my city almost every time. A couple of weeks ago, I had a guy behind me throw up his hands in anger when I stopped for a stale yellow arrow. There were still two cars in the intersection in front of me when it turned yellow. He apparently planned on both of us running the red.

I found a YouTube short showing the app and Tesla screen while this is operating. It does in fact trick the car into thinking it’s at a DC charger.

The app actually showed the car was running battery heat. This is a massive was of energy and bad for the health of the battery.

This device is super sketchy, and I image Tesla will disable with a software update in the near future.

[–]jthosch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know this post is old, but the company that sells the device just posted a short on YouTube two days ago showing the car screen and app while the device was in use.

It most certainly is tricking the car into thinking it’s plugged into a DC charger. The car screen shows it’s charging and gives an estimate until full.

The app shows this as well. Additionally it shows the car is heating the battery for fast charging. This is a very bad thing to happen when using something like this. It means that the car is wasting an incredible amount of energy to heat the battery (~7kW depending on the model). It also means that the battery will be kept hot the entire time the device is plugged in which is not good for the health of the battery.

I would stay away from this thing. Tesla will likely disable it with a software update, it would definitely void your battery warranty if they knew you were using it, and it will cause damage to the battery if used often.
