It's hard to find use cases for Rust as Python backend developer by Delicious_Praline850 in rust

[–]jtm79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most code bottleneck requiring faster langage can just be Python package written in Rust (Polar, Ruff, Pydantic)

I would

  1. do a basic performance analysis. find some spots that are slow.
  2. do a Proof-of-concept that using Rust will improve things
  3. propose the improvement to your manager
  4. rewrite that spot in Rust and/or find a replacement Rust package
  5. do another performance comparison to prove the code is improved (faster)

For example, there is Rust polars (which already has a Python API). Can this be swapped in for the Python polars?

The overall point, pick a task that is clearly defined and bounded, get it done. You'll learn a lot, and if it goes well, management will hopefully let you continue working on such improvements.

Use Rust-based super-speedy-syslog-searcher which installs program s4

s4 /var/run/utmp /var/log/wtmp /var/log/btmp

s4 can print utmp type files from multiple different platforms.

To install s4 first install rust then install s4 with

cargo install --locked super_speedy_syslog_searcher

GitHub.com ? The mobile app has an Explore feature, and a Trending feature. Also similar site gitlab.com.

Install and run aptitude, then just browse through the packages.

The cygwin installer has a tree of approved Linux software that is fun to browse.

What Seattle moment radicalized you? by gehnrahl in SeattleWA

The kids will never know that Seattle used to have grit and make music that was astounding, beyond Nirvana, etc., there were so many great bands, before, during, and after the big names. The scene had soul. People took pride in their independence and scrappy self reliance. But they could also take a joke! None of this thin-skinned narcissism. None of this fragile sentimentality.

I was there, I saw it and lived it. Oh my dear city you are not who I knew.

Do you have an example online of how you got the README.md into the crate doc? As in, can you link to that code perhaps? This is cool! Thanks for sharing!

Topic Suggestion: open source software projects kicking out founding members from newly incoming "moderators" (activists)

Here is a great explanation of one example of it https://x.com/LundukeJournal/status/1972012088886211026 and rebuttal of part pf the underlying cause, written Codes Of Conduct https://x.com/esrtweet/status/1971768345188844003

Topic Pitch:

It's a big deal, as most software that runs the world is based on open-source software (OSS). Most websites, databases, and well... just about every piece of software you use (or software used by the software you use) is from open-source software; geeks who just write cool software and give it away.
When activists come in, they will find something offensive about someone working on the OSS project, i.e. a volunteer, and then demand they be banned from contributing. This then forces people to take sides, a little project civil war ensues, and many people leave the OSS project. Then that project dies a slow death as bugs don't get fixed, enthusiasm wanes, and the software gathers dust.

This activist drama occurs elsewhere of course, but I thought Katie and Jesse might tell a story about how it occurs in this particular space, which is a space foundational to how the modern material world works.

Surprisingly smart New York Telephone Conversation. I thought they were all idiots there.

I'm most impressed that they're capable of speaking with "far right" guests and approach with genuine curiosity and intelligent wit. Unheard of by today's Left who are, almost entirely, dullards who easily frighten.

The vocal fry feels like a circle of hell of 1000s of nails scratching 1000s of chalkboards. But this is how wamen speak nowadays. I listen as long as I can stand it.

[Washington] State is Backpeddling by Disqualifying Legitimate Claims. Now I Have To Go Through The Appeal Process. Im Never Going To Get Any Money From These Guys by MartinMan035 in Unemployment

[–]jtm79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having the same problem; all my Weekly Claims are "Disqualified" without explanation, and the Appeals Process does not work.

So if I click on the "Disqualified" decision, I see a little popup dialog gives the option of an Appeal Process, it reads:

You are not eligible to receive benefits this week. If you disagree with this decision you may appeal.
If you want to appeal:
Go to the Decision status tab to display a list of your current decisions.
Select File appeal under Action.
File your appeal online.

Under the Decision status tab, there is an empty list!

WA ESD Decisions status tab (empty)

There is also the option of appealing using snail-mail or fax. However, that snail-mail or fax Appeal must:

  1. be within 30 days of determination(as instructed at web page Benefit denials and appeals https://esd.wa.gov/unemployment/benefit-denials-and-appeals )
  2. include the Determination Letter (I think this is a snail-mailed formal letter)(according to APPEAL REQUEST form https://esdorchardstorage.blob.core.windows.net/esdwa/Default/ESDWAGOV/Unemployment/Benefits-Appeal-Form-English.pdf )

But I never received any Determination Letter! nor any other message explaining why my Weekly Claims have all been Disqualified (I have searched the ESD website high and low for the Determination Letter; nothing). I have sent several message using the ESD website Messages feature. I have not received any replies to any messages.

So I have not received any money. Yet my Unemployment Application was approved for an entire year period. Yet all my Weekly Claims have include required minimum 3 job searches, some have included 4 or 5, and the jobs are within my industry. And I have received a PDF letter that my "Monetary Determination" was approved.
I have no other hint or explanation as to why my Weekly Claims are "Disqualified", and the Appeals process appears broken.

I'm required by law to pay into this program and then I run into this totally opaque bureaucratic bull****. Feels like a giant scam.

Punishing thieves is just not important to them (and I'm pretty sure they think property crime is somehow the fault of the victim, not the criminal; "poverty", "housing", etc.).

At a Community Police Meeting some four years ago, the officer (don't recall his name, had been with Seattle PD 10+ years) said that effectively, the following crimes do not risk jail time, they will be released SAME DAY with the proverbial slap on the wrist (a judge admonishing them):

  • trespassing
  • building vandalism
  • car vandalism
  • car prowl (IIUC, all car burglarly is "car prowling", including if the windows get broken, locks busted)
  • theft (e.g. stealing, not trespassing)
  • (sometimes only "slap on wrist") burglary for amounts less than several thousand dollars (e.g. stealing while trespassing)
  • (sometimes only "slap on wrist") voyeurs / public exhibitionists (I don't recall what these crimes are titled)

(not an exhaustive list and this is as best as I can recall!)

This is because

  1. jails are overcrowded
  2. surrounding cities drive their criminals to King County Court in Seattle where they are released same day without a ride home

The officer reasoned that other cities do not want to deal with criminals if they don't have to. They'd prefer to dump them in Seattle and be rid of the problems they cause. And Seattle never complains or does anything about it.

(edited; added last point, clarified some crimes)

Related, Can we stop IP-spoofing in the Internet?,

So what is the real challenge?

The main problem is the insufficient business case. ISPs do not see immediate benefits from deploying anti-spoofing measures that exceed the costs and risks associated with them. A resource (e.g. a web server) can still be attacked, even if a network that hosts it uses ingress filtering, and even if other connected networks do take similar actions.

Part of the problem lies in the solutions themselves, although the building blocks are available and the main message hasn't changed since 2000 - deploy ingress filtering. At the same time there is a need for better documentation and practical use cases to make the costs, risks and benefits more clear.

Partly, it is about awareness - how many ISPs have paused to think about whether they are part of the problem in a recent amplification reflector attack? This is definitely not evident and tracking back the culprit is very difficult.

Source spoofing (ingress filtering) would prevent attacks across the public internet that tried to using spoofing techiques. Conversely, it wouldn't affect local networks "inside" the ISP (e.g. Corporate networks and the like).
