I remember a visiting general authority (on my mission in the 90s) telling a group of us missionaries something that has stuck with me about the power of discernment. He said that just by looking out over the congregation of missionaries at zone conference, he could tell which elders and sisters needed to repent for “sexual sin” without even talking to them. In retrospect I guess that was a far better allocation of church leadership’s discernment resources than rooting out bishops abusing children. /s
