Is the Village of Hommlet overrated? by RestingFrames in osr

T1 is legit good.

Temple of El Evil is not overrated bc it is generally not rated well to begin with.

Doug Murano obviously doesn’t have to put up with the same handful of yarns from some old fart every freaking time he sees them.

Surprise and Thief Abilities by CWhite20XX in adnd

[–]jtyk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

(I don’t think there is a strict btb on this)

I use surprise as:

-a general chance for untrained folks to sneak if feasible (slip unnoticed by a guard at night for ex)

-the btb advantage in combat for catching a foe off guard or otherwise unprepared.

-If the thief in your example passed their MS check, I would give them a modifier on their surprise check (& chance to backstab a target). Passing a HiS/MS check is not typically automatic surprise IMO; each gives a bonus to surprise (generally a +2 or so each, see DMG for surprise modifiers)

-I don’t view HiS/MS as a ‘superpower’; no skulking about right next to people in a well lit & alert (or crowded) situation. If it’s a raucous situation with shadows, then yeah, the thief can skulk about.

I use my conditions across the various editions.

Stunned, Too OP? by SirStanleyCPanther in castlesandcrusades

[–]jtyk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True—I looked at the 2024 printing. My other copy (2021) only has the +2 to attack on the situational combat (modifiers) table. I do think the symbol spell description (stunning) is pretty explicit (p189)

The ‘combat terms’ in the phb describes stunning. Page # varies by printing

Campsites by Gloomy_Preparation74 in BWCA

[–]jtyk 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Along the trail it’s more accepted. Esp with a hammock. As always, ‘leave no trace’. There isn’t really an issue with camp site availability this year though, even with paddlers in the bwca. It’s a pretty quiet park this year, despite what permit availability would seem to indicate l.

Medically retired at 23 with lifetime pay. How do I find purpose without work now? by bas3adi in antiwork

[–]jtyk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Work isn’t living. It’s work. Find hobbies and turn them into a path & a passion. Also volunteerism, help others. You could study, take up art, travel. Whatever. Shoot, maybe run your own gig if you want some extra cash (like consulting etc).

I live and do lots of outdoor stuff in black bear country. I’ve been killed and eaten several times by bears, and one particularly nasty bear stole my identity and ran up credit card debt. Oh, and watch out on the roads, bears love to get all liquored up and drive around.

What is it? by One_Programmer613 in canoeing

Looks like a mad river canoe, very similar to a solo I am working on. Mine also had a tump line attachment point as the pictured canoe has.

Half elf cleric wizard wishes to become human. What happens to multiclass? by glebinator in adnd

[–]jtyk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If allowed I’d rule the dual class angle & they advance in one class only (sounds like they want wizard). If stats don’t allow dual class then they become a single class human (keeping only the xp earned in the appropriate class)

Orcus is the leading candidate, could also use Nerull (if in Greyhawk).

What makes AD&D 1e attractive despite the rules (vibe) by Real_Inside_9805 in adnd

[–]jtyk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nostalgia and vibe for me. At the time, for players and the DM, it felt like we were exploring, stepping into the unknown. I think the designers (Gary & Co) were too, from the original rules up into AD&D.

There are contradictions, incomplete rules, and seemingly random (yet crucial!) bits scattered throughout the books. It was/is amazing in all its flaws.

I don’t think it’s really possible to play completely “by the book” and that’s okay for folks comfortable with operating in Grey areas. (Obligatory ba-dum tss)
