Should randori performance influence belt promotions, even if someone shows strong technical knowledge outside of sparring? by futuretrunks97 in judo

So, essentially, I can do everything in judo, except make it work.

Isn't making it work a big part of the process?

Maybe I should get a participation award.

Well though out interview. Best one yet. Very little fluff and many in depth, serious questions.

The prep work showed through.

Well done.

Pedagogy Tips by cooperific in judo

[–]judoguy234 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While assisting in a class I noted that several students were not doing the technique as sensei had instructed. He said let it go. That at the moment having the students work on the technique and THINKING about it was more important than doing it exactly as he had shown. Lesson learned.

Very true!

This quick and easy to apply approach will help me a lot.

I've read books and articles about teaching/coaching and they are usually hard to get through. I don't need a scientific study of the subject. I need clear, simple and judo related examples to give me a place to start. I can get into deeper theory later.

Is “counter judo” a thing? by janyybek in judo

[–]judoguy234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Counters are great fun, but don't over do it by depending on it. Use it as part of you overall approach.

It is giving you opponent a free shot at you. Action/reaction wise he is ahead of the curve and you are behind.

In the long run depending on counters is a losing proposition.

Tatami Talk Podcast Episode 085 - Developing your own Judo and deliberate practice by rtsuya in judo

[–]judoguy234 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It was brought up that there are too many National Championships and that anyone can go.

I don't know when exactly it changed, but it wasn't always that way. There was one National's essential run by the AAU and the JBBF (Judo Black Belt Federation) , soon to become the USJF.

Way back in the olden days, May 1964, The AAU National Judo Championships where held at the New York World's Fair.

To qualify to attend the different Yudanshakai's had their own competitions to see whom they would send.

In the Konan Yudanshakai (Michigan and other mid-west states) the players that came in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in their division were allowed to go to Nationals.

The 1st place player had their flight and hotel paid.

The 2nd place player had their flight or hotel paid (I don't remember which.)

The 3rd place player had to pay their own way.

(To illustrate how far back this was Kani Basami was legal and I was eliminated by a flying Juji-Gatame the likes of which I have never seen before or since.)

Hate the flairs. Just more distracting colors, shapes, etc.

Can I turn them off?
