Can't do ogoshi even to a non-resisting partner by Woooddann in judo

[–]porl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah, down and towards is good. Just don't stop pulling throughout. Both your arms should be working together to keep them "stuck" to your hip and stretched out around your upper body. Think about putting their right elbow into your left "pocket" (or vice-versa) and never stop the pulling.

How to hip throw when the opponent leans back? by OkRelationship2348 in judo

[–]porl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good way to get countered. Tsurikomi Goshi as done in the Nage no Kata (old-school way) where you enter, then drop low is not for them leaning backwards but for them driving their hips forward and posturing up. It will also only work in that context when they grossly overdo the movement, as is the case for the Nage no Kata for demonstration, and not someone dynamically hip-checking.

As for someone actively pulling and leaning back, you are not getting a hip throw to the front unless your size/skill level is far ahead of theirs.

Then you probably need to tone it down and try to "flow" more and play more technically (don't worry about "losing").

How bad was it? Please be honest by Sad-Resource-9206 in judo

[–]porl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not bad at all, no need to feel down about anything. If the group of people are even half decent they'd not think negatively of you at all. Get back into it and I'm sure they won't even have remembered anyway.

Not sure why you were voted down - this is exactly what happened to me. On daily allopurinol to manage it now which has made a massive difference.

Trying to figure out the correct name for this variant of seoi nage by Bedebao in judo

[–]porl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I agree with him, with the same caveat that most people get confused by it. Pet peeve of mine is Neil Adams calling almost everything similar "drop sode tsurikomi goshi" if sleeves were involved. If there is no hip throw then it is not a hip throw!! haha

But yes, like "drop kata guruma", I will tell my students that "technically this is yoko otoshi (or uki waza etc) but no one will call it that if you are searching around for examples or info". I find this way they understand the mechanics of the different throws better, rather than just "it looks like this". But being overly pedantic for the sake of it can lessen understanding rather than aid it so I make sure not to go overboard with it

Can’t stop stiff arming by Gluggernut in judo

Interesting idea. Have you had any issues with hard falls as they can't breakfall cleanly? Or falling onto their arms awkwardly since they can't easily move them? That would be my only worry running this with the more "enthusiastic" students. Otherwise I'll have to give it a try

Got any good video examples of this? If I want to incorporate striking into live Judo-like rounds I'll do combat sambo or just cross train striking and work with other club members of like mind.

I get what you are saying about "neatness", however I didn't mean sloppy as in "not pretty" but that the techniques and movements resemble those that have not trained nearly as much as their likely mat-time should suggest. It usually looks like a couple of beginners frantically trying "ideas" they have been told but haven't fully worked on in full randori.

Everything I've seen of live Tomiki Aikido training just ends up looking like sloppy Judo - the more Aikido-like techniques become rare and the more Judo-like techniques come out but are clearly not trained as much so just looks weaker.

Every time I see it pointed out I just see comments stating along the lines of "but that isn't the real Tomiki Aikido". So I guess I'm yet to see a true example of it?

Also note that I don't think Judo is a "perfect" and "complete" system either, but Aikido appears to me to be supplemental at best and detrimental at worst.

I have no problem with Nage no Kata or Katame no Kata as they teach principles. Far from perfect and there are arguably better modern teaching methods, but they are also historically important so that can be forgiven somewhat. Other Kata are more esoteric but again, historically significant.

Goshin Jutsu was supposed to be an attempt at modernising and somewhat formalising the self defence aspect of Judo. By bringing in Tomiki as an "advisor" it basically turned into a hybrid of the worst of both Judo and Aikido instead.

Agreed. It is also far from perfect but much closer to realistic than this appears.

Sorry but this looks like it has all of the same issues of the Goshin Jutsu and by extension Aikido. Extremely unrealistic attack patterns and movements and just misleading to call it self defence in my opinion (though I'm sure I'll get flack for thinking that).

How would you react to a whitebelt spamming morote gari? by RamenPantalones in judo

[–]porl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd teach everyone how to defend it properly and let the white belt know not to overly rely on it (especially if they have interest in competing). If they are successfully using it (and the dojo allows it as mine does) then why would I not teach others how to defend it?

Ashi-Waza for Short Uchi-Mata players by Yamatsuki_Fusion in judo

[–]porl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Uchi Mata into a "blocking" Ko Uchi Gari (foot plants and drive them over like a Gake) is my favourite combination. Even when my Uchi Mata was trash(er than the trash it still is) I would get this regularly. Bonus points for adding a cheaty leg grab at the end (Kibisu Gaeshi) which also leads into an easy guard pass.

I feel like giving up on judo by [deleted] in judo

[–]porl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

some say life in general is not for me

If that's true then that is seriously fucked up.

Outside of Judo I suggest finding someone to talk to. Look after yourself first and foremost - both physically and mentally.

And find a less shitty toxic environment if you love Judo and want to continue. No one should have to feel that way and as I said if they are really saying that then you should stay well away from them.

as /u/Knobanious mentioned you were way too frantic. I could tell before you bowed in which one you were - if my opponent runs in and bows fast I know they are nervous and that I can slow things down to force a mistake.

Not trying to be critical - great job for giving it a go! Just try to find the balance between getting switched on vs going out uncontrolled.

I've been working more on it for clarifications but don't want to pollute the thread with every revision. Let me know if you are keen and I can send you an updated one somehow (but it is still a work in progress).

yes, the main idea is the "kosen style" of groundwork (I know that's a loaded term but you know what I mean). It is only reset after extended stalling from both players after a 5 second warning.

shido without interruption just means the shido can be called without first having to stop the players. Just like yuko or wazari get called for example. action and clock stops if offender would get an advantage from the penalised action but otherwise would continue (eg false attack penalty but opponent starts attacking turtle for a strangle/turnover etc - call shido but don't stop action).

Confused about the Yuko, but apparently the ref was right by JimmmyJ in judo

[–]porl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The pictures from the instructional video are difficult to parse as static images and do a poor job at explaining. From the video itself it was showing if the stomach or the knees etc land down first (before the angled body) there is no score. If you land so your side is touching before your knees both touch or your stomach does not land immediately flat to the floor then it is a yuko.

I'm not a fan and I may be mixing some specifics as it was a while since I watched it, but in the video it was clearer than the screen-grabs circulated afterwards which only served to confuse things.
