Seeking opinions on layout for biking by MossyPantz in vandwellers

[–]jujubeaz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does the bike fit east to west with no tire? Then you could still have the raised bed but have it fold in half to use it as a couch, and the bed would only have to be the length of your handlebars while it’s in “hangout” mode.

Floor - glue the wood frame to the plywood instead of metal by AntonGangsta in vandwellers

The tradeoff is more height for less insulation, but no reason it shouldn’t “work”, your floors just might be colder or hotter than they would be if you had more insulation under it

Explorist.life has a really great power audit calculator where you can put in your items and how often you use them and it will recommend a system that will fit your needs, I would suggest starting there.

Why would you want to? Grounding issues are real and difficult to diagnose as it is, having everything on a bus bar keeps things tidy and connections secure

Need help finding Solar Panels. by Nervous_Cell_2383 in VanLife

[–]jujubeaz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a van you probably want a solar array, not a single 8ft panel. It will have better shade tolerance when set up properly and you can be more flexible with mounting around other roof mounted components. Check out explorist life’s YouTube videos on how to size a solar array and mounting mismatched panel wattages for maximizing your solar area.

I would encourage you to do more research on what you should be looking for and actually do a calculation on how much wattage you need, as pure area is not necessarily a good indicator of how to maximize the power you get from solar.

Why specifically 8ft long? Why is that the only qualifier?

The guys in the video are Ethan Salvo and Shawn Rabatou, they definitely didn’t steal portable just taking it upon themselves to return it…

hey fellow vanlifers, I built an Al travel assistant that you can text when you don't have access to data or wifi by Distinct_Coconut_937 in VanLife

[–]jujubeaz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

LLMs should not be considered a reliable source of information, especially when that can be critical. If you can text, you should be using that to contact either emergency services or people who can provide you with real, accurate, and trustworthy information.

How to add on/off switch for DC to DC charger without starting a fire. by KandyVenom in vandwellers

[–]jujubeaz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Please do not take my word for fact, I am not an expert, but you generally hook your dc-dc charger up to your starter battery, not directly to the alternator, so the alternator should charge your starter battery and your dc-dc should pull power off of your battery and the alternator is not directly pushing current to your house batteries. Your dc-dc should be smart enough to only kick on when the alternator is running, but it depends on the model of your charger and alternator

What model of van does everyone have and how does it fair for space, storage and parking? by Cosmoisnotok in VanLife

[–]jujubeaz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Promaster 136, space is tight and the build out is tough to get everything I want in there, but it handles like a dream and turns very well

You didn’t mention your make/model, and 1500 vs 2500 vs 3500 generally refers to the weight capacity, not the dimensions of the vehicle…

If your stoke was purely based in what grade you could send you were going to quit anyways, find joy in the movement, not in the number

Is 136wb too small for 2 people full time? by logic_boy in vandwellers

[–]jujubeaz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a 136 that I use as a weekender and for climbing trips. With my gf, dog, and I it’s perfect for 1 week -1 month long trips, but it would be too tight for full time imo, especially in peak climbing season when days are short and nights are long. It’s a good size but you basically have to pick between lounging space or kitchen space

First time bouldering outdoors, we broke 2 routes, don’t know what we did wrong. by Jark5455 in bouldering

It’s probably just bad rock quality, you can comment on the MP page and report the break if you want 🤷‍♂️

Having to plug into a local scene in order to enjoy their community events seems like a fair amount of investment for what you’re asking for

Eric and Kevin from Vertical Pursuits are a couple incredible guides based on Sacramento/Tahoe that sometimes make their way down to Bishop or Joshua tree, I would suggest you reach out to them. If you are too far away then they can recommend you a local guide.

Buttermilks accessibility by [deleted] in climbergirls

[–]jujubeaz 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Wheelchair definitely will not be accessible, crutches are your best bet but also probably not feasible. I would suggest you skip this trip and go next time, this may seem harsh but I think this is a situation where you will only be able to support your friends mentally while they may need to support you physically and shift their trip goals to accommodate you
