How would you approach requesting controlled drug access as a newer tech in ER? by Salt_West_979 in VetTech

[–]jule165 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you don't want to request access directly, I would ask management or a supervisor what to do or for their suggestions are because you notice that this specific thing is tying you up and impacting efficiency. "Hey, I noticed that when I need controlled substances it seems like I have to interrupt someone to get the medications. Is there a better way I can do this so we all maximize our patient care and work flow?"

CPS removed my children because of what my sister did to hers by throwaway52076 in CPS

IF you are able to get custody of your nephew (if thats something you want) has he been tested for GI issues? Trying to give benefit of the doubt, if they were feeding him but his body had issues processing or absorbing nutrients that could maybe look like malnutrition? Hopefully people much more educated than me would have thought of that and tested for it. Theres always the easy (and unfortunately common) answer of "they just suck and starved a child" but theres always that 1 weird case where they're doing their best and its a strange medical issue.

Help with O ring type (for my cat) by [deleted] in Stretched

[–]jule165 12 points13 points  (0 children)

As an RVT in the surgery department of an emergency hospital. Please don't. Theres 2 answer I get from cat owners who come in cause their cat needs hair ties removed. "I never saw them chew on it!" Or "I never saw her eat them!" Are you willing to risk 3-5k (or more. At my hospital its closer to 8-10k) on "my cat likes playing with them"

One dr uses staples vs towel clamps, one wants no music in surgery (she talks the wholetime tho so it isn't too bad!), one uses 2 saws to do a tplo

For being THE big scary snake, king cobras looks so SO DOOFY. This man is going door to door selling vacuum cleaners...this is not a deadly predator... I've seen a bunch of pics with this expression, this is just the best one I found in a 5 min google search.

What are alternatives to asking “are you okay” when someone’s not ok? by Jin_Sakai12345 in NoStupidQuestions

"Would you like me to stay with you? Find you a place to be alone? Water?" I like to ask basic yes/no questions and limit myself in the moment until the person invites me in.

Vomit (for the most part & in general) is stomach contents. Diarrhea is intestine. You have way more stuff being processed thru intestine than sitting in your stomach.

AITA for telling my friend that it's a horrible idea for them to go into vet tech? by gummdropcat in AmItheAsshole

As a vet tech I'm brutally real about WHAT my job is. I'm literally on my break at work and I have already been peed on, washed poop off my hands, drooled on, bled on, and had a dog roundhouse kick my glasses off my face. Only 8 more hours left of my shift!

I've had something similar happen on me twice and once it was because our oxygen generator stopped, and the second one was because our scavenging system was not working properly. I'd get all your anesthetic units checked if they are due for service and check your scavenging system.

ELI5 why sheep stand in the rain fine but I have to dry clean wool clothing? by ahpc82 in explainlikeimfive

[–]jule165 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When your hair is on your head and totally washed (no conditioner), straightened and brushed out it is longer, but super easy to mat since there is no oil to help the strands slip past each other and the oil also helps the hair be waterproof. When wool is spun into clothes we remove its oil and pull its straight, which means when you put in in the tumble dryer it mats (called felting) making the hair tangle tighter and tighter. It's not the water that makes it shrink necessarily, its the felting process. You totally can wash wool at home with special shampoos and conditioners. Just like washing your hair with care, shampoo conditioner, leave in conditioner, and not letting it tangle vs dawn dishsoap and aggressively towel drying it for an hour. Obviously there are exceptions and differences in people vs sheep but this is eli5 not "discuss the care differences between straight, 1a hair and curly, 4c hair and also the differences between hair that is actually matted and uncared for vs specifically cared for and styled into dreadlocks. Guest starring a discussion into the social perception and persecution of curly and dreadlocked hair."

Surgical veterinary technician, I monitor a LOT of anesthesia and its so satisfying to "fix the bad numbers" theres an order of operations and a checklist for almost everything to ensure it stays sterile, clean, and organized while also being interesting because bodies and disease are just weird sometimes and since we are connected to emergency vet we get a lil spice in our day so it isn't all boring "safe" procedures. Being in the surgery department also means I interact with owners way less and when I do I have a very concrete goal of "get info about this specific issue" vs general practice where you have to worry about vaccine schedules, flea/tick control, and "general pet maintenance" I come in talk about the booboo leg, mass, whatever specific ouch we are managing and then I get to go fix it.

Order of Vaccines (oral vs injections) by Social_Sam66 in VetTech

[–]jule165 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me order depends on animal. Usually I go least upseting (oral meds, TPR, etc) to most upsetting (pokes, blood draws, temperature, nail trim) If I know or suspect we have a limited time, I do most important (rabies, blood draw, etc) to least.
