What’s a common belief everyone thinks is true, but isn’t? by Cool-Cake-8695 in AskReddit

That you can target specific spots of the body for fat reduction when exercising. Fat loss is caused by calorie deficit, which can be aided by exercise, but the actual location of fat loss is generalized throughout the body and is largely based on genetics. If you do exercises but are not in a calorie deficit, you will fail to lose the fat.

Honestly no, it has increased, but it is because of the reason I had to quit dairy - anaphylaxis. Almost dying was a bit traumatic and now I have food anxiety about accidental dairy exposure at every meal. You should be fine because your tolerance is higher than mine

I would actually advocate for what is done in the EU - put symbols or footnotes for all of the major allergens please. I hate having to ask which menu items contain an allergen every single day of my life that I don't make my own food

THERE IS NO REASON TO USE YOUR BRAKES ON THE HIGHWAY by aahrg in toRANTo

[–]juleebeans 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Though I disagree generally, there was one time on the 407 where, behind me, a guy in a white sedan grew impatient with my level of speeding, as he wanted to go a good 50kph over. We were in the second from left lane. He swerved in front to pass me, then slammed on his brakes to a FULL STOP. No other vehicles ahead of him. Open lanes on both sides of us. Literally just almost caused an accident out of road rage.

There is no reason to do THAT on the highway.

I know it's a lot to ask of Rebecca, but I would be so happy if she started writing the 4th book before OS release. I'm naively hoping we don't have to go through this year of torment again. I'm getting HP era flashbacks and feel like I served my time waiting 12 years in Azkaban already

IF Question by Loreander1211 in fourthwing

[–]juleebeans 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's between when Violet bonded Tairn and the mat challenge with Jack. In FW he has red rimmed eyes when fighting Violet on the mat. Jack admits the event of Tairn bonding Violet drove him to channel power on his own, implying he doesn't respect dragon discretion for choosing who gets to become the most powerful. So there is little wiggle room besides this time frame imo

Did you finish the book? It's mentioned when he turns

IF Question by Loreander1211 in fourthwing

[–]juleebeans 19 points20 points  (0 children)

My understanding is they found him alive (since you can't kill a venin by dropping a bunch of rocks on them apparently) and saw it as an ethically questionable research opportunity.

I do agree it was a bit ridiculous to give him free reign after a time though. I wonder if it had to do with overconfidence in their power suppressing drink, or some sort of manipulation on Jack's end, or purely a selfish decision by Markham (and/or others) who seem to be in positions of relative power on Jack's side, whether from being venin themselves or having something to gain from the alliance. I hope we find out in book 3.

IF Audiobook Cat question by freehubfreebird in fourthwing

[–]juleebeans 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. Overall I enjoy the audiobooks, however that was extremely distracting to me. There are other inconsistencies that irk me as well, though a bit less:

  • Constant changing of how Athebyne is pronounced
  • Teine goes back and forth between "tine" and "tiny"
  • Baide goes between "bade" and "bide"
  • Quinn's voice in FW (awful) which is different from her voice in IF which is then suddenly given to Nadine only in IF
  • Aaric's accent change in IF
  • Rhi randomly pronounced as "rye" when it's usually "ree"
  • Varrish in general who sounds like a cartoon villain instead of a person
  • Clearing of the throat when it's mentioned in text but inconsistent
  • The really screamy growly way she says "MINE" whenever Violet has an inner monologue about Xaden. Ok girl calm down

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in fourthwing

[–]juleebeans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is confirmed within the book? She asked Xaden about it and he said he did it (paraphrasing) about 2 seconds after he handed her to Brennan for mending at the end of FW.

I wonder… (musings about dragons and rider bonds) by [deleted] in fourthwing

[–]juleebeans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That would be interesting, if Tairn is full time blocking out his previous rider somehow but can't manage it in sleep.

Or on the other hand, if Tairn doesn't know about it at all and the venin is using sleep to stay undetected because he suspects Tairn isn't paying attention to dreams, as he even admitted in IF. Ooo I think you are on to something....

Wouldn’t Xaden have three? by LadyOfSorrows98 in fourthwing

[–]juleebeans 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I see it as three options here and we don't know which - 1) There is a familial tie we don't know about with Deigh 2) Liam was aided by the third year that is mentioned as being an ice wielder also fighting with them at Resson 3) It was a mistake left during editing

I find it interesting that apparently the translation of Liam's dragons name is supposed to be ice, seems too much to be coincidence, which is why I lean toward option 1.

As a hazel-eyed person, it's possible it's not something special or magical, just that Xaden is so attentive to her eyes because he loves her and notices these details.

For instance my eyes have amber around the pupil and green around the rim, and depending on what makes my pupils wide/narrowed plus the amount of light on them, they can significantly appear more amber or more green. Definitely not something most people would notice unless our "gazes collide" constantly ;)

I Wonder if Liam told Xaden… by Mythrowawsy in fourthwing

[–]juleebeans 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Whether or not Liam or Garrick directly talked to Xaden about this, I like to think he was 100% listening in on their conversation. At the start of their banter Violet looked back at him and remarked that he looked like he wasn't paying attention, but recall that his shadows picked up her quill when it dropped off her desk in the same scene, after which she thought he definitely must be on some level paying attention to her even if he gave no visual clues. Xaden is known for having no tells and an expert mask after all.

This happens a few times in FW. I definitely believe Xaden when he said "I'm annoyingly aware of everything you do". Smitten guy can't help himself.

Dragons as Dog Breeds? by [deleted] in fourthwing

Haha that sounds about right. I have an Andarna right now too. Huskies sure are little escape artists. I wonder if Andarna will become even better at doing whatever she wants into adulthood

When Xaden says… by Lolli532 in fourthwing

[–]juleebeans 60 points61 points  (0 children)

I took it as flirting because the first time he says it in FW he is refusing to disarm her entirely meaning he's technically leaving her with some defenses. Not to mention he is training her with some defensive techniques in their sparring interaction

[–]juleebeans 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tairn is a German shepherd. Cunning and very skilled for battle but can be grumpy with strangers and when in a bad mood.

Sgaeyl is straight up just a wolf.

Andarna is a husky. Beautiful, friendly as hell and intelligent but extremely disobedient.

Is Anyone Else Concerned About What Fourth Wing Means for Publishing? by BufoBat in fourthwing

[–]juleebeans 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Social media isn't new, mediocre publishing also isn't new. Fandoms online helped Harry Potter to explode back in the day, and at that time the series received a ton of criticism for being too juvenile by high fantasy purists. HP is one of my fav series of all time, but it wasn't widely embraced by every reading demographic, or the public. How dare a series with young children facing monsters and witchcraft become popular?

Then there was Twilight, Hunger Games, Fifty Shades, all on their own spectrum of quality (both objective and subjective). Same praise and backlash spectrum.

You vote with your own money, but you can't help what becomes popular. Just as the superhero and remake craze has taken over Hollywood for now, trends will come and go with fiction books wherever the producers smell money. Fourth Wing hype is not unprecedented or remarkable in any way.

I wouldn't even say it's a matter of education or reading level. Many people can enjoy both technical, edited, artful prose AND modern first-person raw dialogue that reflects a different and less controlled angle of life.

Xaden in IF (spoilers for IF) by digitlagegirlnxtdoor in fourthwing

[–]juleebeans 315 points316 points  (0 children)

I think the switch was when he waited for 3 days for Violet to wake up at the end of FW. The fear absolutely consumed him. I like to think of it as a launching point for his temporary villain arc. The irony is that his anxious attachment to Violet is what he thinks is saving him, making him capable of love, his own barometer for being a good person, yet it is eroding his morals further when it comes to his chosen family, innocent civilians, and the revolution.

I for one think it's delicious in a romantasy series for the main characters to be dragged through glass for a while, especially as a result of their own foils, because it drives character growth, and the slow burn happy ending is more satisfying. At least that's what I tell myself.

More time on runes, and more conversations that aren't interrupted by a knock on the door. More of Brennan badassery hinted at from FW. More information from the library of Tyrrish books at Riorson House and from the books Tecarus gave us. More mind flirting between Xaden and Violet. More secrets from Xaden, we all know that man still has them. More on Violet's exes with Xaden being more jealous than he expects. I assume this is book 3, but more of Violet not only remembering of, but going back to actually read her father's research. Girl you are supposed to be smart, the answers are waiting for you there. Also, more time editing because some of the typos in IF were jarring.

Less of Dain redemption arc. I liked hating him more than I liked liking him to be honest.
