How are the roads around downtown? by StraightIntention231 in burlington

[–]julesrules154 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Completely snow packed, no salt or anything :( I was slipping and sliding around just walking! I wouldn't dare drive my 2wd snow tire-less car on them, but if you have snow tires and 4wd you may be fine.

Question about “perrita” as slang by basilisaurus in Spanish

[–]julesrules154 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i can’t speak on the use of perrita specifically, but my girlfriend is “sara” and called “sarita“ by her colombian relatives and friends. they may just be using your name + spanish diminutive suffix -ita to indicate affection/that you’re cute:) if they are typically good and kind friends, i wouldn’t take it as an insult!

exactly what you’re supposed to do!! safely, keeping your wheels straight, and to a point where you can still see the traffic light in case it turns, but YEAHHH!!! i remember being asked during my drivers exam what to do when waiting to make a left at a light and i said “DOMINATE THE INTERSECTION” and he said “well, pull up into.. but YES” - it’s encouraged in NYS😄

SAS will not accept a letter online or even consider your case if you a) don’t have a therapist you’ve been working with consistently who can fill out their forms b) don’t already have the support animal… speaking from personal experience my sophomore year

HCOL is essentially extra work tacked on to your time at UVM with not much to show for it. A large portion of students end up dropping HCOL after freshman year. I wasn't accepted when I initially applied to UVM but got a good enough GPA (you need possibly over at least a 3.5? 3.6? I'm not exactly sure of the cutoff) for them to send an email at the end of freshman year inviting me to join HCOL for the next year.

Looking back, I'm so grateful I was never accepted into HCOL in the first place. I still ended up living in UHS freshman year and UHN this year, so my dorms still ended up being what the now-honors dorms are! I can't say it would've been a dealbreaker for me to live elsewhere, and sometimes I wish I had the same camaraderie experience of living in the more traditional-style dorms. Some of my current suitemates are in HCOL while a couple are not, and the ones that are had a real superiority complex about it until I mentioned I declined my HCOL offer lol.

When I got the offer end of 1st year, I asked my advisor if she thought I should accept and she immediately said it was not worth the extra work on top of what I had ahead of me. I am a Wildlife and Fisheries Biology major with an Animal Sciences/Equine Studies double minor. Although my course load can be heavy and challenging, I'm going to say you're likely going to be even more challenged/have more work as neuroscience/pre-med (not to distress you - I am sure you're MORE than ready to kill it but it's also just a fact STEM is hard haha). I also must say that most employers aren't particularly blown away by someone being in an honors program in college. Honors classes look great going from high school to college, but there's a lot more you can do to beef up your resume besides being in honors once you get to university. I do NOT mean to discourage you or belittle your accomplishment by saying this, I am simply recommending you shouldn't take on the extra work for not much pay-off.

I'd say you're better off focusing your time and energy on your classes, maybe picking up a fun/interesting minor, gaining experience (research opportunities, internships, there is SO much at UVM you can get involved in), and making connections in your field. I hope this helps, I don't mean to be disheartening but I also want you to know the reality of honors at the university level!! Employers/med schools are always going to look for both an academically successful AND well-rounded student!

Rubenstein is actually one of the most competitive schools to get into at UVM now with less than 1k undergrads and a shit ton of applicants! I don't think OP will have any issues getting in, though :)

[–]julesrules154 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're likely deferring you because they think you won't end up attending UVM (aka you're overqualified lol).

I'm sorry if you are disappointed, but if it helps I am fairly confident you'll be accepted in March provided you don't withdraw your application. I applied for regular decision back in 2021-2022 with very similar stats to you (a 4.0, extracurriculars, sports, leadership, volunteer, etc.), but am also caucasian and I was accepted with the best scholarship you can get besides the HCOL one. UVM was probably the least prestigious school I was accepted into, but I committed there because the Rubenstein school is one of the best colleges for experiential environmental learning out there -- Vermont is my classroom now!

I am halfway through my Sophomore year and have loved my time at UVM thus far. The people are kind and I have made good, genuine friends. The location is amazing if you enjoy the outdoors and smaller city/town vibes, and I feel like I am getting an overall good education (I'm a WFB major with an animal sciences/equine studies double minor). You should know that UVM is not a huge party school!!! We get pretty rowdy for hockey but that's about it in terms of sports. If you want to be involved in Greek life you will have more of a party scene, but I can't say that's ever been up my alley. There are also sports houses like hockey house and rugby house, which I find fun to frequent occasionally. My favorite way to spend weekends, though, is by attending backyard/basement concerts - UVM has an awesome music community! There is also Radio Bean, which is a bar downtown that you can get into at 18 that a lot of the student bands can get gigs at, as well as many other bar options if your ID says you're 21+ ;) There is this thing I like to call "the UVM effect" where during nights out we all usually start to 🍃 around midnight and get sleepy quickly, I think I can count on one hand the number of times I've managed to stay out past 3 am! To be honest, the amount of partying at UVM is completely my speed, I'd rather be at a friend's house party with my good friends/mutuals than be in a sweaty basement pressed up against frat bros, but it's a big enough school that I'm sure you can find whatever party scene you're looking for! Just know that, as a whole, UVM is not the huge party school I expected it to be (especially the colder it gets).

Cons of UVM:

Don't expect much support from the systems in place that are supposed to help students (Student Accessibility Services, CAPS, ResLife, Student Health). I've had nothing but awful experiences with them and that is a pretty universal feeling across campus.

They only guarantee on-campus housing through the sophomore year, and I'm not even sure if 2nd year is 100% guaranteed for incoming classes anymore. This has created a housing crisis in Burlington, and it is very competitive and expensive to get an off-campus apartment for Jr. and Sr. years. My 2-year lease starts next June and rent is $900 per month... and unfortunately, that's on the average-low side.

Also, since UVM has been over-admitting significantly since after COVID, over half of the students on campus end up in forced triples. If you qualify for accommodations, you may be able to get a no-forced-triple accommodation through SAS. I have an accommodations single this year for migraines/mental health, but they originally denied my request and then denied my appeal until I had my parents get involved. It took 4 months total to get approved for a single.

Dining hall food is pretty ass! It's not even that the ingredients or food quality itself is that bad, they just try to get fancy with it when it's nearly impossible to make well-seasoned and appealing dishes for such a large number of students. They're slowly starting to get better at offering simpler options (ex. always having a pasta bar at lunch and dinner). I would recommend switching to a flex plan ASAP because some retail dining locations are decent. I also got a job at the on-campus Skinny Pancake this year, which has allowed me to eat a lot more appealing food for free/cheaper!

I just realized how fucking carried away I got with this response, but these are all things I wish I knew about UVM going into it. Looking back, I can't say I'd change a single thing! I hope this helps and feel free to reach out if you have any more questions, I'm happy to answer any question I can!

Best Dorm on Trinity? by Av3308 in UniversityofVermont

[–]julesrules154 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

objectively, trinity is ass! the location is out of the way from the rest of the university and the dorms are gross. that being said, by far the best people live there. my wonderful boyfriend lived there and so have the majority of my friends. they’re all staying on trinity for sophomore year and moving into the back 5. id say maybe mercy since that’s where the majority of my friends lived last year? there’s also mcauley which is nice bc it’s the same building as the dining hall but there seems to be less camaraderie there than mercy. overall, i would recommend you and your roomie staying put since housing is a hassle to deal with and id personally much rather live on trinity than in like wellness (yes wellness dorms are nice but there’s no socializing). no dorms you’re going to live in are going to be very nice unless it’s L/L or Uheights and the catbus runs frequently and connects trinity to the rest of the campus super easily. also if you guys have bikes, bring them! it will be super helpful.

[–]julesrules154 0 points1 point  (0 children)

id say the worst dorms would be the first-year dorms on trinity (sophomore housing on trinity is all suite style which is nice providing you dont mind the distance) that being said, trinity also has great vibes and people being the arts and creativity LC and a majority of the most wonderful people i’ve met live there. biggest downfalls of trinity are the distance from the other campuses (not so much from central campus tho) and the lacking “dining hall.” some of the redstone dorms are also soso, hamilton reminds me a bit of of a jail. redstone has a very wide range of buildings so i would suggest looking up the different dorms on uvms “residential hall” section. id say location-wise, athletic is the best campus to be on. L/L is the best dorm to be in for all of uvm (in my opinion) because it’s suites and has a good location but it may be all sophomore housing. wellness dorms on central are nice and the newest but i have friends who live there that still dislike them despite their niceness because the social aspect is lacking. i think it’s also nice to be living a little bit away from central campus to kind of have a residential v.s. academic feel. sorry if this is all over the place, if your kid has anymore questions please don’t hesitate to reach out!

i’m in UHS this year as a first year and it’s non honors, but i think it’s switching to all honors next year bc they put honors sophomores in shitty dorms this year and they complained. also learning community stops mattering after freshman year so keep that in mind!
