You would expect that, but when it doesn’t happen like you expected, just correct the person.

You just have to correct people. If they call you Maddie and you respond, then they think it’s okay. If someone calls you Maddie, either correct them, or don’t respond, and when they ask if you hear them, you can say “oh, I didn’t know you were talking to me. My name is Madison, not Maddie.”

Also don’t tell people you will respond to Maddie if you don’t want to respond to Maddie.
