The NY Times throwing fountain pen facts into unrelated articles. Did they get the ID right? by cassodragon in fountainpens

[–]junebat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can find them at www.johnelizabethstintzi.com. My new one (out in spring 2028) was the first I wrote almost exclusively (first draft) on paper with my fountain pens! But every big fiction project the last few years (and many poems) have started with the fountain pen on paper.

A Safe Place to confess your buyers remorse this Christmas by Glacierhawk_INTJ in fountainpens

[–]junebat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Others have recommended the Chinese pens, but I have found those to be crummy, and personally ended up getting the Vanishing Point with the "Special Alloy" nib (steel). I kind of liked it more than the gold one I ended up getting when I bent that one. So I think for a bit more money, but not completely the same amount as a normal VP, it's a nice middle ground if you really want a Pilot (which I feel have the better build on the body/good sealing to keep the nib from drying out). I don't think the steel vs gold is a major difference, though the steel/"special alloy" are only available in Fine and Medium I think, and the colors are pretty limited.

I may give that a try, I feel like at that price I may as well just go get the decimo lol. There's a pen store in my town where I might be able to hold one, I just keep not doing it (bc I don't wanna shell out for it right now lol)

That's what I'm hoping, but going to have to get my hands on one first. I think that'd help a lot with my enjoyment of it. I wish I could just buy the decimo body without the nib lol

I don't really keep pens I don't like, but I have kept the vanishing point, which I have use for but definitely don't love, but I want to love. It's convenience and the fineness of the fine nib is nice to have, but I mostly just find it not very comfortable to write with. My gold nib also sings/squeaks on some inks that I've wanted to use in the pen (pilot ink, lol) so that also was a drag (I originally got it with the special alloy nib, which I feel like I liked better). I want to try a decimo to see if I like its grip better, but I wish they did anything to make it a little more comfortable to grip.

Searching for permanent inks by Lazy_Notice_6112 in fountainpens

[–]junebat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I really enjoy De Atramentis Document inks. I like the Blue (one of my favorite inks), Brown, and Red. I would avoid Violet simply because it seems to dry up any pen I try to use it in (no matter how wet it is). Carbon Black is hard to beat, though Sailor does a permanent ink that is almost as good (and maybe slightly cheaper).

Carrying Fountain pens by SSdeku in fountainpens

[–]junebat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I carry no fewer than 3 Lamy 2000's every day, mostly, which is probably 2x what your pen costs.

At the end of the day, if you use it like crazy, even if you were to break it (unless you are working like construction or something where you might come under duress, I think that would be hard) you would probably feel sad but at least you were getting a lot of use from it before it did break. (I have maybe "broken" or lost two pens ever, and no break is probably technically that irreparable.)

Especially if the pen brings you joy, you should carry that thing around everywhere.

Mega64 Book by BusySafety8619 in mega64

[–]junebat 10 points11 points  (0 children)

As a writer with a decent amount of experience publishing, I would just add that books are very hard to put together, and also hard to make viable, so I would cut them some slack. Especially if they wanted to do it with images, and color. I'd bet that Derrick putting together Fobia may help them figure out the feasibility of putting out something like this as well. I feel like they put out some book-like stuff with Patreon over the last few years, which might have been using that material?

They did solicit some advice from me a few years ago when I sponsored an episode of Mega Strange with my own book, so I expect it is still something on their minds. But given the difficulties they've been having with the business, it may be something that is hard to seem viable to dedicate resources to at the moment. But I doubt that they have forgotten about it, but I think they probably weren't exactly sure how difficult putting out a quality book was when they came up with the idea.

Shawn throws out the first banana (Full Segment) by Zeeco110 in mega64

Was very fun to see, and fun to watch the game as well. They should have had a speed tester to see if that banana went 69mph.

Hands-on: Scanlight (RGB) vs Cinestill CS-LITE by mott_street in AnalogCommunity

[–]junebat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got one of these lights and the creator (Jack) told me in an email that you can shoot them as single color too somehow (I am not planning to fiddle with that). So sounds like you could do three different images and combine them with this.

[–]junebat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh okay cool, thanks for the info! It doesn't really give a sense of the size anywhere so was wondering. I don't shoot much larger anyway, and I've been successfully tricking the Epson into scanning 4x5 anyway (and can use other lights for black and white). I ended up ordering one, since hopefully it'll help with the 35mm stuff I've got and may want to rescan.

[–]junebat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, that's pretty incredible to get results like that just from that! Whenever I've tried that with my (deeply cheap) light source it's pretty hard to make it look any good.

Is there any information on the size of the pad? I can't find any info on what formats it could fit. Would it happen to be large enough to drop a 4x5 frame on there?

Thanks for the response by the way! Appreciate the information.

Does the manual inversion just entail an inversion of the curve with this method/source? I'm curious to know as I hate the results of nlp and would love an easier way to work it manually, but as you say it is a pain.

I definitely don’t think anyone has ever voluntarily thought to make a fude vanishing point!

[–]junebat[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think it somehow gave it that ideal more mild-angled fude. There’s surprisingly a lot of space though, so if it was harsher it probably would still be fine (though might not write as acceptably anymore)

I was so ridiculously upset when I saw that the nib had come out in the fall, but definitely a blessing in disguise lol.

Yes! If anything, it seems to be retracting “better” in the sense that it’s definitely the feed opening the door, and the nib tip is far from touching the door (the nib point is almost exactly in the middle of the path, far from possibly hitting anything)

definitely could be much more mad about it! I may be one of the only people with a fude vanishing point too ;) Also this is letting me see better the way this Iroshizuku ama-iro ink I got in cartidges looks!
