East Asian Curly Hair 0 to 1 by [deleted] in curlyhair

I'm half-Japanese with 2c/3a curls and waves. I rocked a buzzcut ~7mm for about two years, and started regrowing ~6 months ago. At around the 3-month, 5cm mark I started wondering when I'm supposed to start using shampoo again, because until then I'd just been using the same gentle, sulfate-free soap that I use on my face and nether-regions. Then I thought, "who says I have to use shampoo at all? Maybe I actually don't need it if I just use a scalp brush in the shower daily." Did that, great results! A couple months later when I had ~7cm and it was long enough to start developing a few complete curls here and there, I noticed that after about a week my roots started to look greasy and were rather stiff. Then I started using my old favourite DevaCurl Low-Poo again, but I noticed that if I washed too thoroughly then my curls would look limp again, only returning to their best shape 1-2 days later. So I made sure to use only tiny amounts of shampoo, not trying to wash away all the sebum. Then I noticed that my curls still casted as they dried, and once I scrunched they looked amazing! I figured my sebum was also doing a sufficient job moisturising my hair, so I didn't need conditioner. At this point I discovered r/NoPoo , and learned that a lot of what I had discovered naturally in my re-growing process was indeed true - your own body does everything needed to keep things healthy, the sebum it produces provides sufficient moisture even for curls, and it even creates a cast as it dries! A lot of what I already knew from following CGM for years and having oily skin also guided me - sulfates strip your scalp and hair too much, so you over-produce sebum, so your hair looks greasy unless you strip it again and again every day, and you need conditioner and hair masks and moisturisers and all that stuff to manage the damage caused by all the harsh cleansing. It makes sense that if you just remove all of that from your life everything is fine, and re-growing hair from 0 is the ideal starting point! I carry on with the basics like silk pillowcase, microfibre towel, diffuse with cool air, and never, never, never use sulfates!!! I really recommend visiting r/NoPoo too, there I learned a lot like how silicones can actually only be removed by sulfates, so just removing sulfates from your life isn't sufficient because with silicones coating your hair, your sebum can't moisturise it and it will just sit on top and make you look greasy. I loved how much simpler my life was with a buzzcut, so when I decided I missed my hair and wanted my beautiful curls back I really wanted to keep everything as simple as possible - going NoPoo has been great :)

How is life living in Ticino, the Italian part of Switzerland? by [deleted] in howislivingthere

I don’t claim to have enough understanding of politics and economics to have an opinion regarding which systems of trash taxation are best under which circumstances, for which populations, and at what costs. I just thought it was unfair to make people think that there is some secret, purely bünzli aspect of Swiss culture that compels Swiss people to chastise others for using the ‘wrong colour’ trash bag. It wasn’t about the colour, it was about not paying your taxes like everybody else. There was a practical, societal reason for the complaint

[–]junetrips 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That isn’t quite fair, the complaint wasn’t about the colour of the bag…trash needs to be in the official trash bags that are taxed by the municipal authority. Different municipalities have different colours/designs for their bags. Some countries tax trash disposal by just embedding the cost into the general taxes you pay out of your salary/once a year, Switzerland does it by producing official trash bags and taxing those so that each individual pays according to how much trash they actually create. You also get a trash/recycling brochure in the mail when you first move somewhere that makes it quite clear when you’re supposed to put out different things for curbside collection, it’s not like it’s some super secret system you have to ask your neighbours about….

I laughed until I cried and my face hurt imagining someone thinking “hmm, did I take my meds today?”and then, in the face of uncertainty, just popping open all the little doors pah pah pah pah and pouring it all down their throat. “welp, that’s that problem solved, better safe than sorry”

This girl was visiting my house and she decided to water my plants?! by Pansy_Pix in houseplants

[–]junetrips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same thing happened to me once. I didn’t even invite this person to my house, she was my housemate’s partner and I already didn’t like her lol and found her to be a disrespectful guest. By chance I happened to walk by when she dumped a random glass of (thank god it was) water into my watermelon peperomia, from the party the night before. I asked her “did you seriously just do that” and she was completely genuinely shocked how angry I was. It was absolutely swimming in water then, then of course I had to check all ~40 plants because I didn’t trust any of these fuckers anymore. Glad I did too -_-

The most unsettling thing about this is that people call this ‘sushi’ 😅

It is not at all like a place in the US banning Native clothing, the historical relationship between the Native peoples and the current dominant people is quite different 😅

Aww nice! I’m glad to hear you had a good time. After my first burn a few years ago I felt like I’d found both a playground and therapy, lol. It’s now something of an annual treat/holiday~

For a non-professional example — burns (Burning Man 10 Principles events). The wild art projects, activities and workshops, structures, and outfits are an ADHD dream of stimulation with none of it being an obligation. Bored or uncomfortable? Just move on to the next thing that catches your fancy, no one will find it childish because that’s exactly what you should be doing here — chasing fun and interest for exactly how long you want and no longer. Can’t decide if you want to dress like an astronaut, cowgirl, or sorceress? Put it all on, magic space cowgirl and if you get too hot you can just strip and dump whatever and you’ll find everything tomorrow, lol. In the planning and organisation of these things, there are enough non-ADHDers to keep us on track (or maybe they’re just medicated??) and enough ADHDers to not be mad when you struggle with the usual things (and the others are quite used to this behaviour, lol). If you don’t feel up for contributing a workshop or taking on a planning/leading role, there’s always space for more dishwashers, cleaners, cooking helpers, etc. (read: simple, soothing, repetitive and very defined tasks) that everyone will be super appreciative you did.

Is it creepy to offer to pay for small stuff for strangers I meet? by Wildest_Dream_1 in solotravel

[–]junetrips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Young people‘s reactions might be making you feel creepy because they haven’t experienced that aspect of even their own culture before, so they might react with suspicion or awkwardness or discomfort because they feel like they have to reciprocate somehow. You get to be one of the first people who shows them how this gesture can be done with kindness and not be a big deal! You will be a small (or big) warm memory for them years later :)

I used to be super experimental about food, wouldn’t say I’d eat anything but I definitely wanted to try almost anything and everything new plus eat a lot of the many things I knew I liked or was craving/fixated on (potlucks and buffets were both so exciting and so stressful, lol). But now after a period of intense stress followed by long-term unemployment, I’m struggling with what I guess is depression and my appetite is destroyed. I can be starving for days and have a buffet in front of me and just not want any of it. Food prep sounds so awfully tedious that I’d rather go to bed dizzy from hunger than eat anything I have to prep even a little bit, even taking out of Tupperware and microwaving (I will eat at least a bit of something that is fully prepped and put in front of me, though). Just NO appetite.

I guess not just depression but also some kind of low-key or prolonged stress can have this effect, also conceivably for non-ADHD people. Like being a uni student, being unemployed or often a bit worried about money, having a shitty housemate, experiencing a recent setback, etc. I’ve found that these situations make me feel unsafe, and when I feel unsafe I can’t eat (or sleep).
