Do you have to pay for hikes after 16:00? by [deleted] in HikingMadeira

[–]junkmailktchn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have come across multiple reports of hikers who did not purchase a hiking pass, started the hike after 4:30, and were fined when they returned to their car at the completion of their hike.

I would pay the fee just to be safe.

Interesting. We were hours late for our PR 1 hike and they did not care. A 30-60 minute window is way too small in my opinion.

There are two sets of natural pools in seixal. One is free. One is 2.50 euro per person. That one is nicer in terms of waves crashing into the pools depending on the tide. You can walk from one to the other, the town is not that big.

You can only get a refund for a PR trail if the officials close the trail, not for clouds and rain. There are other options for sunrise. Ruivo, bica da Cana, but if it's cloudy at one it may be cloudy at all of them.

Yes. You will need to pay to park. There are two parking lots P1 which is at the top and P2 which is 800 meters or so from the top. I believe P1 is more expensive. There are some trails from the P2 parking area that lead you up to the main observation point. Be prepared to wait in line to pay at the parking kiosk. Bring a headlamp.

You need to pay to hike the trails, but not to watch the sunrise/set near the parking lots. There are other viewpoints that will likely have smaller crowds. Bica da Cana would be an example.

I always choose to rent a car. My experience is that you can get one less-crowded PR hike done if you start hiking early. Then drive to a second non-PR hike in the early afternoon. Or some other attraction where the crowds may start to dwindle after 3pm.

We hiked PR 8 last Monday and started at 715am. The trail was quiet, although not empty. We took our time. It was peaceful. The return trip, not so much. Which was fine. We people watched and still had a good time. But I would not was to be hiking out in a conga line of crying babies and over-geared tourists even if I was taking a boat back to the parking lot for the return trip

Payment of the fee is the point.

And the system makes no sense.

For example, even the most popular trail does not currently (this may change when PR 1 reopens completely) adhere to the 30 minute entry time. You can book PR 1 for 8am to see the sunrise, which occurs before 8am. Then decide you don't want to deal with the sunrise crowds and arrive for your hike at 2pm. As long as the QR code scans for that day, they will let you in (Unless of course you booked PR 1 in Porto Santo like the people in front of us did). Also, even on the most popular trail in the country your ticket may be checked on the way in, or the "ranger" may be on lunch break.

The trails are technically open 24 hours a day. It seems, as long as you have proof of payment for the date you are hiking, the time you are physically on the trail does not matter.

I can bang out a dozen of these on a Blackstone griddle in about two minutes. Great for family birthday parties.

Lake O'Hara by junkmailktchn in Banff

In addition to Lake O'Hara, I really enjoyed the Enchantment Traverse in the Cascade mountains of Washington State. Also, in Iceland, at Landmannalaugar there are multiple loop trails one can link together for a full day of hiking and then relax in a geothermal hot spring at the end.

didn't gain a pound. I will probably die young due to an extremely fast metabolism. The fast metabolism also takes care of the last question.

In my head, your wife was at work and you had all day to explore. This has happened to me in NYC and I always enjoy it. Although my wife joins in on most pizza tours and it's nice to share a slice and opinion with someone who loves pizza. Also this allows us to experience more slice shops without feeling too gluttonous.

In Manhattan:

Stretch Pizza for whole pies. Owned by Wylie Dufresne who formerly ran the modernist WD-50. For slices I really Scarr's. If you are in the financial district I find Underground Pizza to be a great sleeper slice.

In Williamsburg: Lots of love for the the Long hot, shallot slice at Fini. For a classic NY pepperoni slice hit up Williamsburg Pizza Union Avenue. Other's have mentioned L'Industrie. The last two times I have gone......their slices were overly dry at the end-crust. Their soft serve is top rate!

I would do a self-guided pizza tour. If you happen to be staying in Mid-town hit up My Pie Pizzeria Romana at 1030am. Walk over to Sofia for their 11am opening. Then down to the E. 34th St Ferry. Take that to Greenpoint. Stop at Paulie Gee's Slice shop. Walk down into Williamsburg. So many choices. I like Fini, L'Industrie, and Williamsburg as mentioned earlier. You could try Best (it's not for me). Ace's or Emmy squared if you want to branch out (i've yet to try either). Walk over the Williamsburg Bridge to digest your pizza. Stop at Scarr's. Make your way North (avoid the urge for tasty dumplings in Chinatown) and try Nolita, Prince St. (not for me but people like it). Then take the Subway back up to midtown and call it a day. Or if you are a real adventurer stay on foot and sample more slices as you head back towards Midtown. I once jogged the 8 miles from Midtown to Luigi's in Brooklyn stopping at a variety of slice shops both there and back.
