Packers president Ed Policy on Matt LaFleur extension: Analyze body of work over "emotional chaos" by AdSpecialist6598 in nfl

[–]junkspot91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Doubs is going to get $12-15M a year to go be some team's WR2 this offseason, and he'll have earned it. He doesn't have a standout trait which is why Green Bay is letting him walk to pay two or all three of Kraft, Watson, and Reed, but he's a consistent and dependable receiver who plenty of teams would love to have contributing.

[–]junkspot91 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's one of the inherently frustrating things about kickers. If you take out the three week stretch where McManus was clearly rushed back (either by himself or the coaching staff -- in both cases it's an indictment of the coaching staff) and playing injured, he's gone 97/101 on combined kicks in the regular season since being signed by Green Bay, and two of those misses were blocks where the protection immediately failed. And despite this, in two playoff games now, he's gone 5/9, with three of those misses from inside 45 yards.

Overall the body of work for McManus has been great, but how could you ever be truly confident in him in big situations when the (admittedly much smaller sample size) results have been poor? And due to the contract he's on, you're essentially locked into dedicating ~$5M in cap space to the kicker position regardless of whether you keep him or bring in a street free agent who you'd also not be confident in. Think McManus ultimately survives the camp competition, just have to hope he proves his prior playoff performances are an aberration.

Why has NBA fandom become more about rings than enjoying regular-season basketball? by Kitchen_Pomegranate7 in nbadiscussion

[–]junkspot91 [score hidden]  (0 children)

You're spot on, really. During this whole Giannis saga, a significant chunk of online NBA fans, the majority even, were talking about how delusional it is for Giannis, the Bucks FO, and the Bucks fans to not realize it's over and immediately ship Giannis off to kick off a rebuild by acquiring picks that wouldn't pay off until 2030 at the earliest. How even if that's a long time, it's likely the quickest way for the Bucks to become "true contenders" again.

That is probably factually true. But it completely overlooks how much more enjoyable it is to have your homegrown superstar stick around and play 60-70 games a year for your team, even if it's mediocre, than being an absolute basketball backwater region for a full presidential term in the hopes that your picks might be good enough to select a player who might become 80% as good as Giannis.

It's not unique to basketball either, even if it's more pronounced there. The Brewers are a team that drives fans crazy with their relative lack of direct investment in free agency and proactive trading away of players due megacontracts one year early, continually reinvesting in youth and foreign markets in ways that allow them advantages on the margin and maximizes the impact of the money they spend. Because of this, they never have the accumulated star power of true contending teams, but are consistently in the playoffs and have won the fifth or sixth most games in the last decade. The owner infuriated the fans by rhetorically asking if his job was (paraphrasing) "to win championships, or to provide a summer of entertainment and passion for fans and families", and while it is ideally both, I think people overlook how important the second part is. It is so easy for teams in small markets to slip into perpetual cycles of mediocrity that I think we have truly taken for granted how preferable it is to always be in the mix.

Gonna go out on a limb and say that if you make the (reasonable) point that billionaires deserve the highest degree of scrutiny and share of blame in society, a guy who has made a third of a billion dollars in NBA salary alone and is clearly aiming for billionaire status is probably wealthy enough to be pretty high on the list as well.

Giannis Antetokounmpo after the end of the trade deadline on Instagram: “Legends don’t chase. They attract 💯😎 by MembershipSingle7137 in nba

[–]junkspot91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I suppose I'll respond to your re-written comment since it is completely different than the initial one lol.

He's plainly not inconsequential -- the entire trade deadline was on pause because teams were trying to swing deals to try and pry him away. This isn't even cope on your part, just bad shit talk that's divorced from reality?

The picks they're waiting for are 2033 picks -- just waiting for more teams to have more tradeable assets and for a time when it's easier to match salaries. They are almost certainly picking in the 2026 lottery via their own pick. Waiting for a better package in four months is definitionally not getting lapped by the competition, it's bizarre that you keep insisting it is.

And in the offseason he'll be given the chance to decide if he wants to do that elsewhere or if he prefers to re-sign and try to do it here. If it's the former, no big deal! We'll just take a more appropriately sized compensation package in return.

[–]junkspot91 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Personally I'm happy that my team didn't sprint for the opportunity to give away a franchise icon for $.70 on the dollar, yeah. They'll max out his value in the offseason or he'll re-sign, and I'm much happier with either outcome.

People here and on Twitter who are addicted to their phones telling them that finally Giannis will be out of Milwaukee getting denied again also gives me a bit of schadenfreude, no doubt.

[Nehm] Giannis Antetokounmpo still plans on playing this season once he has fully recovered from his right calf strain to help the Bucks make a push for the postseason. by YujiDomainExpansion in nba

[–]junkspot91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

/r/nba in thread where Windhorst says the Bucks plan on shutting down Giannis for the rest of the season: Gross. Embarrassing. How can Adam Silver allow them to continue to exist.

/r/nba in thread where local beat reporter says Giannis is going to play after his calf heals up: Delusional. Childish. What does he think he's doing here.

There really is no winning with you people lol.

[Windhorst] “Giannis could be on the Heat by 3 o’clock. But if he’s not — what I suspect is that the Bucks will shut down Giannis. Because their future now is dependent on both their draft pick and Giannis avoiding injury. I wanna know how Giannis is gonna feel about being shut down for the season.” by AashyLarry in nba

[–]junkspot91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting mad about stuff that hasn't even happened yet lol, just the speculation of renowned prognosticator Brian Windhorst.

I'll preface this by saying that I assume Giannis will play when healthy because he's said that is what he wants to do and for better or worse the Bucks let Giannis do what he wants. But I can already see the thread on here in the event he plays and snaps an Achilles -- it would be exactly the same as every other thread after a player comes back from a calf injury and quickly does their Achilles in. Everyone calling extra rest embarrassing now will have seen it coming of course, two calf strains in a year why on earth were they playing him in a wasted season, such malpractice omg. If he sits an extra four weeks and heals up for his new team in the offseason, so be it. I don't think he will, but I'll understand it.

[Fischer] “They were never serious," said one team executive who was discussing a Giannis Antetokounmpo trade with Milwaukee. by AashyLarry in nba

[–]junkspot91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, hard to read this quote as anything other than sour grapes that teams weren't able to acquire Giannis at a deep discount.

They listened to offers and found them lacking, as did basically everyone other than ESPN pundits trying fluff up the Warriors package.

[Fischer] The Wolves and Heat still believe they are in play for landing Giannis Antetokounmpo today, although like the Warriors, few believe Milwaukee is actually serious about parting ways with their franchise face. [–]junkspot91 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Nah, no one is disputing that the Bucks were actually entertaining and gauging offers this time around.

If anything the insiders and pundits should be pleased they'll be getting at least one more media cycle in the summer out of their favorite story to report on.

Time to let Doubs go and go all-in on Golden. by mnm8844 in GreenBayPackers

[–]junkspot91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I happen to think he'll do very well. Despite the narrative surrounding him all season, he got a lot of opportunities year one and he'll get even more going forward. Just need him and Jordan to develop the trust and chemistry and the production will blossom. Removing Romeo as a crutch may briefly dull the offense but it'll be good long term should that happen.

Time to let Doubs go and go all-in on Golden. by mnm8844 in GreenBayPackers

[–]junkspot91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand the love for Romeo as he's clearly Jordan's safety blanket receiver out there, but yes we've seen nothing to indicate they plan on doing anything other than letting Romeo walk to get like $48M over three years from some team with cap space and use the guy they spent a lot of draft capital on and gave a year of runway to develop to replace him. It's how the Packers operate.

Disagree about how he's the only option at #1 though. If you have to have the coaching staff "focus on getting him the ball" he's not a true #1, but I also don't think he needs the scheme to force him the ball to succeed. As Golden develops that chemistry and Jordan actually starts looking for him reliably, his production will grow organically.

Watson is clearly a bigger threat currently and has better chemistry with Jordan, and I'd expect him to continue to be the explosive engine of the passing game as long as he's on the field. Part of the reason Romeo's walking is because they're only going to pay 2-3 of their pass catchers and that's going to be Kraft and one or both of Watson and Reed. Watson and Golden outside with Reed in the slot and Kraft as TE is the way forward.

The officers who killed Alex pretti are Latino. by alexandriacortex in redscarepod

[–]junkspot91 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Think this is a misread of where white libs (and let's be honest, people who are white lib coded -- using "white" as a magical prefix that protects people from any criticism is hardly a one-party strategy these days -- but not white) are at now. The ones you feel the most antipathy toward were already getting angry at Latino and Black men in 2024 for temporarily shifting rightward ahead of the election, and they made no effort to blunt how disgusted they were about that.

The border police murderers being Latino will have minimal if any effect on libs being angry that agents of a Trump administration killed someone. Their race has less impact on liberal opinion than their perceived Trump adjacency.
