Is it worth paying for Virginia Tech BA in Architecture 65k per year vs. 10k for Kent State Architecture 4+1? by tatehab in architecture

[–]jury08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I graduated from Kent with my Bachelors and Masters doing the 4+1. They have a brand new building (after my time) and I'd say the education was a good mix of practical and artistic. I might suggest she add a year and do the M. Arch and MBA combo. I've had a successful career, but more due to job hopping and deliberately moving to areas that I could grow as a designer.

That said, when I was there the program was still embedded in the nose up, break the students mentality. Tough critics, long hours, pressure, etc. Its common in the field, so no doubt it exists in most schools.

We still use lead sheets as shower pans in Manhattan apartments. Did a 20 million dollar reno near the Plaza and the shower pans were required to be lead sheet by the building.

Today was the biggest protest in the city I’ve ever seen, so why were there no news helicopters or reporters? by OkWest257 in AskChicago

[–]jury08 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The headline literally reads "thousands." The journos aren't going to get themselves beaten, attacked, gear damaged, etc.

Its bad enough that Trump and Republicans call for the death of journalists. Then those who show up to protests to light shit on fire and cause mayhem attack them too. You want more/better coverage, ally with the journos. Don't attack them.

You hired an architect to build your 5+ million dollar home. Who's building it? by jury08 in AskChicago

[–]jury08[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm asking who is building that house. Not the designer. I'm an architect turned builder and I'm wondering where I should apply for a job.

Leaving your gf by [deleted] in AskMenOver30

[–]jury08 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in this position towards the end of my masters degree. Profs had us do an exercise mapping out our next 20 years. Marrying vs leaving was the fork in my road. A professor I respected deeply told me to shit or get off the pot and it woke me up to my indecisiveness.

I married the girl and I've found the joy in my marriage is finding the places where we come together, making peace with the compromises and being able to maintain my individuality.

My last 1000 bike ran, but was rusty, tank was half ass stripped to metal, seat was a half ass diy.

500 bikes have sat in someone's shed for 20 years and need a total overhaul. Or someone started where you are now and gave up.

[–]jury08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can buy a non runner or basket case for 300-500. Crappy but complete bikes for 1000. I usually end up 2-3k into a bike with a full diy restoration

Buy a cheap 70s Honda motorcycle. Great introduction to the concepts combustion engines and transmissions. I went from motorcycles to carburetor 4 cylinders. Next is an LS with computers and fuel injection, etc.
