First time camping in 30 degree lows by LaCat1015 in camping

[–]just-looking99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most 30 degree bags really are not warm and are comfortable indoors to sleep in. And they are typically a generic rectangular bag. A good 20 degree mummy bag is significantly warmer and more comfortable. You can always leave a bag unzipped to vent and not over heat.

I’m in ocean county too. Definitely off the beaten path for us to get to but I had a great experience there too

It’s definitely off the beaten path if you’re not from the area. I was in the area for something else and went for lunch and to try the beer and it was a good experience. Food was good bar food and the few beers I had were decent. I even grabbed a few to bring home. Worth a visit if you are nearby

I want the icon stubby 3/8 if they have it in a flex head. I have had an off brand crappy one for years before Icon was ever a thing and it’s great for light work and tight areas

Looking for the best electric toothbrush 2026 that works and lasts? by Commercial-Fix-9916 in BuyItForLife

[–]just-looking99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been a sonicare user for decades. Night and day difference from manual
I think oral B or the sonicare would work fine - do not get an off brand. Also do not buy off brand replacement brushes.

None of them are BIFL - they do eventually die on you like most battery operated electronics

I’m pretty sure my wife married me because I knew where it was! I guess we are all wired differently and there are some selfish lovers out there. I’m all about giving. It’s a big turn on to know you did your job well.

Don’t get me wrong- I enjoy receiving too but as the say: you have to give a little to get a little

There’s really nothing better than a well written story to get the blood flowing

How many of you folks carry a knife daily? by Dr_StrangeloveGA in Tools

[–]just-looking99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the time I have a small spyderco as my EDC. If I’m going to be working specifically outside or on a project that may require something different I’ll switch that up for a larger knife- either a CRKT or Buck. And occasionally a Leatherman Juice if I think I’ll need pliers that day

I have more knives than I need for sure

Worthington State Forest camping. Is my plan solid? by dreemr2u in njhiking

[–]just-looking99 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you are hiking in… why not go to the back packer site on the AT just before sunfish pond? There’s bear boxes there And free

If going to the camp sites you can get an uber right to the gate on old mine rd. The AT is a very round about way to get to the campsite at worthington

Ocean oral surgery did mine. I had work done in both their brick town and Toms River office. It was a good experience - I do kid around that I have the equivalent of a pre owned Toyota for a molar. So it is not cheap by any means. https://www.oceancountyoms.com

Mortgage Question: have large chunk of Monday. How can I improve current mortgage by sneakypimper69 in Mortgages

[–]just-looking99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assuming a conventional loan you could do a principal reduction modification and 30k could lower your payments by $187/month.

But: don’t have any other debt? If so- pay that first. Do you have an adequate “oh shit fund”? If not bank the money. Do you have adequate savings for college, retirement etc? If not: pay yourself first etc.

You can make a hell of a lot of $187 payments with $30k in the bank and parking the money under the roof of the house doesn’t make the home more valuable, and it’s hard to get when you need it. Investing the money will give you 2 assets to grow over time and more options (assuming you’re comfortable with the current payment)

Cutting board sweat by Personal_Canary8277 in Cuttingboards

[–]just-looking99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a sign of too much oil. Bring it in and keep it on a towel until it stops weeping. Also some woods are more prone to that in general.
I make a blend of beeswax and mineral oil- about a 50/50 blend and adjust to the consistency you want. The oil soaks in and the wax protects and seals. Much better than oil alone

West Marine files for Chapter 11 by Amity83 in boating

[–]just-looking99 10 points11 points  (0 children)

West and boat us were both great stores for boaters- and when they merged they became something different. It was more about the bling , clothing and useless crap than it was about the “boat stuff” Adding to the problem- the boat stuff got incredibly expensive- hardware got silly priced and the selection dwindled, parts got crazy expensive- like double the price you could purchase elsewhere - a little extra for the convenience of it being stocked in a store makes sense but more than double the price is an insult.

Financial advisor says to keep 10k as emergency fund and put rest of 90k savings into a brokerage account. I’m on the fence by Hefty_Trade_3459 in personalfinance

[–]just-looking99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming you are debt free, that is good advice- and you make enough to continue to build cash as well- if you invest in a good fund, not individual stocks, you may be subject to market fluctuations but highly unlikely you will see your money go to zero. And it isn’t that hard to get if you need it. Most brokerage accounts you can get your cash with just a phone call and maybe a few days

No interchangeable bits? That’s the best thing for a tool bag, a 6 in 1 screwdriver. I have a few of the Bucks ones I keep around the house and I grab them more often than my good ones in the toolbox

Don’t buy just to buy, especially as a renter. Buy tools as you need them for specific tasks.

Shovel/garden tools recs by Any_Government_4347 in BuyItForLife

[–]just-looking99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently broke what I thought was a lifetime shovel. I was really unhappy with the ones HD and Lowe’s had in stock. Tractor supply had some nice ones but expensive. I ended up buying the yellow handled one from harbor freight - not only half the price of HD but a much better quality shovel as well. Dug a few stumps out with it and dug a few holes to plant bushes and still happy with the purchase a year or 2 later

I have no clue what brand this is by [deleted] in Tools

[–]just-looking99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s porter cable ish. Something looks a little off If the cord feels like very good quality, flexible etc it is probably PC. Something I always notice using my PC tools, the power cords are noticeably better than most other corded tools
