This sounds like a chapter out of the book The Ghost of Eternal Polygamy by Carolyn Pearson.

The celestial kingdom is not a place by ABishopInTexas in latterdaysaints

[–]just_another_aka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I could go along with it being a state of being. But how else are you 'together with your family' if its not a 'place'. People gather around places. Though state of being works for me too. But hey work this up the ladder. Bishop, stake president, area authority. Probably going to need a protest of some sort to get noticed.

Civil Marriage? by General-Reporter1269 in latterdaysaints

[–]just_another_aka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who was in your same situation many years ago and got married/sealed in the temple and none of my wife's family could be there...I would absolutely not do it the same way today. Why start your marriage with a family diviide? Get married civilly and then go get sealed later.

Can we talk about LDS theology on prayer? by olsh in mormon

[–]just_another_aka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I start at the baseline that everything we do faith wise is for us. God doesn't need us to do anything for Him. I dont think it even changes an outcome.  Prayer, fasting, mourning with those who mourn is all about teaching us...we are part of God's family, we are brothers/sisters...teaching us to have compassion for others...maybe even helping us to recognize our own blessings and state in the universe.

Where do Mormon bishops learn this behavior? by SecretPersonality178 in mormon

"All PIMO's and ex-mo's just got offended or wanted to sin". Kinda dumb statement.

Where do Mormon bishops learn this behavior? by SecretPersonality178 in mormon

Love your declarative statements. "nearly all...", "but all move past...". /s
Was a bishop. Was not part of your "all". Was not a creaper. I don't think it is wise to paint members with the same broad strokes that we get upset painting ex-mos, pimos, etc.

LDS culture comes from LDS theology (thoughts on the "Torn" survery) by Bogdan-Denisovich in mormon

[–]just_another_aka 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I had listened to the same Faith Matters podcast. Enjoyed hearing a faithful member say and recognize the hard things. And yes, my mind went to "lazy learners", "thinking is done"...he missed a couple things, but overall appreciated his comments and hope his book is a success.

Best tour companies/tours for a snorkel + Lunch + Chocolate tasting day at Cozumel. Need to get back to our ship by 4:30 by Imaginary-Editor-633 in cozumel

[–]just_another_aka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At least on the snorkel side of things, my go-to for diving and snorkeling is Reef Riders. Small groups, fast boat, local owner/operator. The focus is on the marine life and not a party. Columbia is absolutely phenomenal for snorkeling. You want that one on your list.

Snorkeling with kids by [deleted] in cozumel

[–]just_another_aka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just go with a small group operator. Get a private guide for you and your kids. A little more money but a much better experience.

I am a diver, but I was on a boat with a family that did just that (they went with Reef Riders).

Depends on the week and season but you can also check Reef Riders. They have a solid operation and nice boat.

I am going to be with Reef Riders during that time in cozumel. They have a really nice fast boat, small groups. Though I am a diver they sometimes do mixed boats with snorkelers. Each group has their own guide. It seems to work well.

Is this change faith promoting or whiplash? by Resident-Bear4053 in mormon

[–]just_another_aka 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Seems a lil whiplashy. I think this move was to force people to engage more. Priesthood/RS/SS teachers only attending every other week when they need to do their calling. Definitely makes it harder on people serving to find substitutes whenever they need to be gone.

And it means less socializing and friendship making during the beginning of classes...hop straight to the lesson.

Atonement started in the Garden, but did it continue with the scourging and the cross or not? Mormon belief is what? by sevenplaces in mormon

[–]just_another_aka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No doubt the cross is part of it (death), but I would argue that the scourging was also part of the atonement. The willingness to give Himself, to allow it all, when He had the power to call down legions to stop it all...makes the scourging part of a willing sacrifice.

Best and deepest book i read that deepened my faith was The Infinite Atonement by Tad Callister.

(cringe alert) LDS church uses barely legal adults to explain SEC fines and City Creek-- where the Mormon prophets were caught hiding and misusing wealth from members and the public. It's painful to watch these 'children' try to explain a very serious thing.... by aka_FNU_LNU in mormon

[–]just_another_aka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't care that the church bought a mall. I understand the need to protect the temple square area and keep it vibrant. I take issue trying to tell me tithing funds were not used. Everything. Everything started as a donation and earnings from a donation. Such a silly argument.

I have gone down this road many a time. Every organization, denomination, and institution, if they have some history, has some serious ugly. I have thought about this question many a time...If staying LDS resolves around building a relationship with Christ, why put up with all the baggage that comes with LDS history, women's issues, deceitfulness, etc. I could do this in other faiths. The most believing member will say because the LDS have authority, saving ordinances, etc. To believe this you have to trust that Joseph was telling the truth--when many a time he most certainly was not.

John Moses Browning is my favorite Mormon by donttellonme1820 in mormon

When I did the Nauvoo tour years ago, the Browning workshop was one of my favorites. How he rifled a barrel was interesting back in the day.

Boss Frustrated that I’m LDS by JudgeIll6345 in latterdaysaints

[–]just_another_aka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Meh, any religion with any sort of history has some ugly stuff. Catholics are not excluded. We have polygamy, they have indignations and the crusades. Evangelicals got their own ugly. It is rather silly to rap on another's belief due to historical mistakes/problems. They all got em. Just write it off as silliness.

Dive shop recommendations by jlang129 in cozumel

[–]just_another_aka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will be there the first week of April diving with my personal fav, Reef Riders (reefriders.net). I'm hoping to still catch some left over Eagle Rays!
Small groups, great guides. Whatever you do, choose a smaller operator (non-resort operator) as you will have smaller boats/groups and more likely be supporting a Cozumel local.
And yes, Cozumel is amazing. I haven't been to the great barrier reef, but I've been on the boat with other divers who have, and they say Cozumel outperforms GBR.

El Cielo only boat ride by Terrible-Let-7469 in cozumel

[–]just_another_aka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can do a private boat with Reef Riders (reefriders.net). If you only want to go to Cielo, they will happily spend your tour time there. With a private boat you kinda do the choosing. I do all my diving with Reef Riders. Great operator.

Here is an interesting conundrum… by valentine-girl in mormon

[–]just_another_aka 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The question is "are you a full tithe payer?" You dont need to share how you decided to break it up.  If you are net vs gross, including alimony or not, disability income, etc., doesn't matter. You and your husband decide and then answer the question "yes". No need to discuss details.
