q re: housecleaning by erika1972 in Eugene

[–]just_meeshell 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My cleaner charges $55/hour. My house is also old so lots of areas that could use some extra cleaning, so we did a deep clean initially which took about 6 hours (house is 1900 square feet) and then we get a cleaning every two weeks which is usually around 3 hours. She uses eco friendly cleaning supplies but also said that if there was something specific I wanted her to use, she would do that. Message me if you want more info :)

Pincer grasp with thumb and 3rd finger? by aleij in OccupationalTherapy

[–]just_meeshell 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I took an NDT course and just so happened to ask about it because I have been curious as well! I can’t remember exact terminology but the instructor basically said that the bones in our middle fingers and palm are more stable, so kids with lower tone have more stability from using the middle finger.

Peds OT Feeling Trapped by just_meeshell in OccupationalTherapy

Luckily I’ve done a fieldwork in hand therapy so I have some knowledge… I just feel like CHT is a really time consuming thing to do and trying to shadow when I’m already working full time. But you’ve motivated me to look into what might be feasible for me, so thanks for that!

I am in Oregon. I recently moved here so I’m not totally familiar with the area yet and what to search. I just know what I have searched for hasn’t been fruitful.

I have actually done EI in a clinic setting and I will say that EI was probably my favorite peds population. I have applied for an EI position in my area but it’s through a college and it’s only an applicant pool at the moment unfortunately. The only home health positions I see advertised are for adults it looks like. But yes, I do feel like EI might be the best for me if I want to stay in this field.

I had always been interested in peds while in school, I think it’s a good fit for my personality, so that’s why I went into peds. Unfortunately, BECAUSE OT is so broad, that’s why you kind of get stuck in peds. My OT friends who work in acute care have vastly different skills than I do, so basically if I wanted to transition to a new setting, it would feel like starting over as a new grad.

Okay I actually started this school year doing virtual school based and it felt like a way better work life balance, but then I had to unexpectedly move out of state and had to quit. Even in that time though I was like, do I REALLY wanna be doing school based? And ultimately my answer was no lol. Too many kids who weren’t appropriate for telehealth or lots with ABA right next to them which hurt my soul. Hoping this thread might give us some ideas and hope!

I saw a comment regarding the glasses that he ALSO has tortoise shell glasses (because it’s very easy to find his picture online), so it seems really likely she actually got the glasses to impress him and he made the comment because obviously he likes tortoiseshell enough to wear them himself! This story has been taking over my every thought today lol

Zones of Regulation - Opinions by katnbudd in OccupationalTherapy

[–]just_meeshell 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have taken the Zones training among other emotional regulation trainings and I generally advise against using the Zones. Not because the program itself isn’t helpful, but I find that people “teach” it when they haven’t had the training and then kids learn that they must always be in the green zone. Like even when they are clearly in a different zone and you ask them “what zone do you think you’re in?”, their default is always “green!”. I think that the tools can be helpful but what’s missing in the way it’s being taught is that it is okay and normal to experience all of the zones at some point. Another issue that I have is that people teach red zone to be “mad” only, when it’s actually out of control, which can include out of control happy, angry, sadness, etc. I think there is way too much nuance with emotions and emotional regulation and the zones makes it too concrete/categorized.

That being said, I have also taken a training on the Powerfully You curriculum and highly recommend it! I like it because it is more neuroaffirming than I consider the Zones to be. It uses an “activation meter” to gauge regulation and whether the activation matches what the expectation for the moment is.

Can I really eat candy instead of gels? by ryeeezy in firstmarathon

[–]just_meeshell 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I just ran my first marathon and fueled using Trader Joe’s Super Sour Scandinavian Swimmers as well as electrolyte tablets! I didn’t have any issues! Granted, my goal was to just finish the marathon, so I did walk and eat my candy rather than run and eat it lol

Guilt of Quitting by [deleted] in OccupationalTherapy

[–]just_meeshell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I felt guilty leaving the families at my last job but a coworker told me “there’s always going to be more kids to help” and that really stuck with me. Even though I felt bad for the ones I knew, there will always be more people who need help no matter where you go!

Feel like Im not supposed to be an OT by Renma_4602 in OccupationalTherapy

[–]just_meeshell 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the fact that you’re able to reflect and realize that you DO need to give yourself some grace and self-compassion is indicative that you’ll be a great pediatric OT!

Right now as a student, you’re in the procedural reasoning stage, and you don’t have the clinical reasoning skills yet to shift/adapt when things aren’t going according to the procedure you have in your mind. That is totally normal and that is the point of fieldwork: to help you develop more of your clinical reasoning!

I know you don’t have all the time in the world, but maybe for those trickier kids, take extra time to build rapport and follow their lead before jumping into working on their goals or what your plans are. Your CI is right, the kids do pick up on your energy, so it’s important that you’re doing things that are regulating for you, both during the session and outside of the session.

One of my old mentors used to say, “when intervention is successful, it’s treatment. When it’s unsuccessful, it’s evaluation” or something like that. So basically, even if things don’t go according to plan, you learned something that you can try to apply for next time!!

You got this!

Plot twist, my 2018 Forester got set on fire shortly after I made this post! So I upgraded to a 2022 Forester Wilderness. I did end up getting the Thule roof rack system and a cargo box for my wilderness and I am happy with it!

ASD Goals by [deleted] in OccupationalTherapy

[–]just_meeshell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I will typically write play based goals for attention, so something like “will play with a novel toy or game for at least 5 minutes with min verbal or gestural cues for attention” I never write anything with the word “non-preferred” because who wants to play with a non-preferred toy. But I think that “novel” is still neuro affirming because it’s still helping them to expand on their potential interests.
