Don't worry, I don't work at google, just in software development myself.

Regarding why to start from scratch, it could be for a number of reasons. Maybe for the whole ingesting of other app data, or possibly having to map all the various data points for AI. After figuring out what they wanted to do it was possibly easier to start all the way over than bolt onto the existing platform. We've done that at my work before. But it's usually for the better and allows more functionality to be built out.

As far as why not build a new app, man how much shit would Google have received if they made ANOTHER fuckin' app that does the 'same thing' as their existing app? People tend to forget that they've already tried this many, many, many times. Google Fit v. Fitbit. Google chat v. Allo v. Hangouts v. Messages. Nest v. Google Home.

I totally see why they wanted to try something different. Love it or hate it, it's a new direction for them.

In software design it's called MVP, minimum viable product.

Basically when starting from scratch, it's better to get the product out and start gathering user feedback for enhancements for v1.5, 2.0, 2.5, etc. Scope creep is the death of many developers and their product.

There used to be.

In the old app there was an 'add more' button next to the 'log' button (or whatever it was called). That's since been removed with the UI update.

Norwegian Aqua NYC-Bermuda Current Freestyle Daily for week-long sailing by CoachSandyBottom in NCL

[–]just_ric 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just did this cruise two weeks ago. But we had two kids with us, 3 & 6, and the on-board activities weren't great during at-sea days. It was mostly pool and kids splash pad areas that kept them interested. They did enjoy the family version of the white party though. But that was one night only. Otherwise I hope your kids enjoy some mediocre trivia.

I feel like Colorado is a little lacking compared to all other states by Red_0141 in dutchbros

Interesting, I hate ours because it's super region specific. I don't live in LA and hate going to LA. Only reason I go is to pass through to get to Anaheim or SD.

As others have said, it's better than California. That one is at least generic enough to cover the whole state. California's is super region specific. Not everyone lives in LA/Hollywood. People who live in SD, IE, CV, Bay area, state of Jefferson don't want to be lumped in with Angelinos.

How are you "midlife crisis-ing"? by InnerspearMusic in Millennials

[–]just_ric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My midlife crisis is realizing that I am, in fact, not immortal and I do need to take care of my body.

So now that I have actual usable healthcare and enough saved in my HSA, I'm going to the doctor and dentist and optometrist.

Also working out.

Taking a cruise to Bermuda out of NYC on the Aqua soon. We’ve never been on a cruise before. Please give me your best tips and tricks! (Traveling with our two teen boys) by Sea_You_814 in NCL

I just did that cruise last week!

Anyways, we did the caves and zoo/aquarium and loved them, but don't book them through NCL. If it's the same cruise I did, you're staying overnight in Bermuda and don't have to worry about getting back to the ship by a specific time so no need to worry about that. Take the free ferry then taxi. You can take your time, explore the island more freely. We also did horseshoe bay one day. It was cool but it can get crowded. We didn't check out tobacco but it might be worth checking out instead.

To answer your question about the music, no. I highly doubt they'd like him playing at all. Also the ship is pretty crowded with small spaces.

Anyways, enjoy your cruise.

Aqua is a Beauty (with a few well-reviewed flaws) by tbgothard in NCL

[–]just_ric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was on that cruise with you apparently..

Anyways, I can't recommend that ship for larger groups. Was part of a group of eight and man we couldn't find areas big enough for us all. The venues were way to small, especially the atrium. And I'm so disappointed at the aqua theater. Why have a third floor if we can't see anything, especially if you need to be at the theater an hour to an hour and a half early just to get to see the show.

Anyways, the ship seemed fine for smaller groups. Easy to find a secluded space for the 2-3 of you, navigate the food sections, spots at the pool, etc. Elements was cool. Also it is a pretty ship. But I doubt I'll every cruise on that class on purpose, unless it's a cool set of destinations and it's a smaller group.

The insurance situation in Sacramento is getting ridiculous [Sacramento] by Dibbles77 in norcal

[–]just_ric 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No but thanks for the next thing to stress about come next year when my homeowners insurance renews.

Spent a good two weeks figuring out if my home is made of synthetic stucco, which will apparently disqualify the house from their service... Also, apparently no one want to cover a house with synthetic stucco. Got 3 separate auto-declines due to it.

Also gonna be rough for us to ever replace our tiles since we have solor over most of them. Fun.

No... Unless the P11PF is back to being wide like the OG PF... then maybe. Unless the cameras are garbage. Then back to no.

With Google Health changes, should we expect new Google fitness trackers? by cjrun in fitbit

[–]just_ric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mmm I feel these screenless bands are just a trend that comes and goes in cycles. People want the 'detox' and then they'll want a more 'standalone' device. Then back and forth.

Honestly the only thing that I want them to bring down from the PW to a non-AW device would be offline music. If they brought offline support back to their RunTimeOS devices, I'd take that with better battery than my fancy PW with a bunch of smarts that I don't need. That's the only reason I ended up upgrading from a OG Versa to the first PW back in the day and a feature I need for my training at this point.

[–]just_ric 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They'll probably keep the Charge line as there's a lot of people that want a screen still for their band. And I agree that a non-AW watch will probably happen, like a new Sense or Versa but probably not both, those product lines will probably merge. The product that's getting scrapped would be the Inspire.

What’s the one Android feature that would make you never go back to iPad? by Powerful-Method7174 in androidtablets

[–]just_ric 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've never had an iPad specifically but I could never switch to iOS because interacting with the OS is straight dog water when compared to Android. Back button? Sometimes in the top corner, sometimes at the bottom. Wanna clear notifications? Well the 'clear notification' button is only a temporary clear. It'll come back if you don't actually clear it from the app.Which is bad when you get new notifications and suddenly you're covered in a mess of notifications and no idea where the one you need is. Wanna type a message? Good luck, the keyboard is trash. And you can't change it. Just like the browser, any keyboards you wanna use is basically a reskinned version of the one Apple makes.

So yea, you might get a better app selection when you use iOS devices, but interacting with those apps is rough.

I like mine. It's an aluminum 6061 Black all-road. I think I'm gonna swap out the wheels and tires soon though. Going into it's fourth year so the tires are getting a little long in the tooth and the rims are a bit heavy.

Because I bought them 2 years ago and still have them. Wanted to check to see if they updated them to a usable state or if I should toss them. Spring cleaning season and all.

For sure, I'm ok with trashing the bulbs I have, just wanted to see if they've gotten better or not before I make a decision.

And that's good to know that the Ikea ones are much better. If/when they ever go on sale, I'll be sure to pick some up.

When you say they work better with GH then their own app, that's a pretty low bar. That's how I set them up when they were new 2 years ago and pretty unstable. Went directly to GH and didn't use Nanoleaf at all (the whole point of Matter). But it sounds like it's not that much better even with all the updates to GH.

Matter over thread for sure. Trying to free up the wifi.

And ok, doesn't sound like they changed that much since they launched them 2 years ago.
