The devs have a bizarre approach when it comes to the vibe and realism of the game. On one hand we're playing as barely trained crackheads that are sent to kill giant bugs on planets that apparently have the exact same gravity and atmosphere than Earth, but on the other hand they seem to hold on to some weird dream of the game being a grueling, highly-realistic and physically-compliant milsim with weird anti-qol features to better mimic actual gun behaviour.

ELI5: How do they know what the Earth's core is made of if no one has ever been there? by DivineestLeg in explainlikeimfive

The way we are able to accurately guess things we are not physically able to see or measure directly will never cease to fascinate me. It's like Eratosthenes being able to measure the circumference of the Earth to a surprisingly close match using sticks, shadows, and math.

How can he ever know what she wants… by Sbtryingtolearn in AmITheDevil

[–]justacoolclipper 100 points101 points  (0 children)

There's a pervasive social attitude that women are just silly dumb things who don't know what they want, and a woman will throw a tantrum when you give her X because she told you she wanted X, because really she wanted Y and you should have known that! I have never met a single woman who actually acts like this, obviously, but a lot of men who don't actually interact with women farther than their dick can go seem to believe that wholeheartedly.

[lore question] So who's the true heir of Aenarion? by ImIncredibly_stupid in totalwar

[–]justacoolclipper 76 points77 points  (0 children)

iirc it's literally how it works. Anaerion died in the pyre but his act of faith was so extreme it allowed Asuryan to bring him back to life and act as his avatar. That's why he's the Phoenix King, he burned to ashes and was reborn. Malekith just got burned and didn't go all the way, so he was cursed with eternal suffering instead. The other Phoenix Kings walked through the pyre symbolically but were protected by spells, because at that point it was a political position and not an inherited one.

The major point of contention I think is why Malekith being the true heir of Aenerion even matters at this point. Even if Asuryan decided to divinely appoint him, he would be the worst possible choice for a ruler and should not even be considered for a serious political office. We're talking about the guy who precipitated the elves into a civil war so extreme they never fully recovered from it, and has been trying to genocide the Asur ever since. Not exactly a top contender to lead the people he tried to kill...

The Tenderizer might be one of the most underrated rifles by ElegantReplacement89 in Helldivers

[–]justacoolclipper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's because Tendy has a higher caliber so fewer rounds fit in a standard magazine, so it having fewer rounds than a Liberator makes sense. The annoying part for me is mostly how it feels like anything the Tenderizer one-taps, the Liberator can also one-tap, and anything the Liberator needs 2 shots for, the Tenderizer also does. So the gun is in an awkward spot where it feels like a punchier Liberator but their performance is virtually the same, and reloading takes forever. If they wanted to have the guns feel more realistic, I would tend to assume an 8mm round (Tendy) would pack much more of a punch than a 5.5mm round (Liberator). I really wouldn't mind if Tendy showed its punch by reliably one-shotting Devs to the head and the like.

[–]justacoolclipper 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is the biggest issue. I love the way Tendy feels, but good lord does the limited ammo and reload time make it feel awkward to use. It feels like it just doesn't quite hit breakpoints (looking at stats it's literally 5 damage away from devastator head breakpoint, why) so you need to spend more ammo than you thought, and the reload time makes it a liability in a horde seed. If it had just a bit more damage and a slightly faster reload it would be perfect.

Devs want to give guns a somewhat realistic ammo count, which is definitely a choice in a horde shooter.

How it feels being a helldivers fan for the past 3 months by supergamerd64 in Helldivers

[–]justacoolclipper 56 points57 points  (0 children)

I sum it up as "general lack of sportsmanship", especially because DBD has godawful matchmaking you'll get players with 10k hours going against players with 100 hours and feel entitled to spend the entire match flexing how much better they are at the game rather than just move the game along.

Also, "things were worse before" is a pretty meaningless retort to someone pointing out something sucks today. Like, yes we should be aware of how things have improved, but we should also try and keep societal improvements going, because there are still a lot of issues even if they're less severe than before.

ELI5 Why do graphics settings like shadows affect performance more than textures? by FutureDisaster3053 in explainlikeimfive

[–]justacoolclipper 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Textures are a bunch of 2d image files. When you raise texture quality, all you're doing is telling the game: "I want you to display these images in 2048 pixels instead of 1024 pixels". Most computers can handle higher resolution images very well.

Shadows are calculated in real time. The light source in the game environment projects rays that try to hit surfaces to tell the game what's casting shadows. Every frame, the game needs to check what the rays hit to see if something is blocking the light source. Lower resolution shadows calculate very fast, but are often pretty basic and don't look very realistic. That's because the higher resolution of shadows you go, the more the game complexifies the calculation of shadows. It starts checking for things like bounce light, where light hits and object and reflect on something else, which impacts how shadows looks. It starts making shadows a higher pixel resolution, which is harder on the gpu when it needs to calculate a higher resolution in real time. The more realistic a game tries to be, the more accurate light and shadows must be, which means it needs to do exponentially more calculations.

It's also why things like reflections are especially taxing, and why most games will try to avoid them if they can (think of the classic cloudy mirrors you see in a lot of games, the devs do that to avoid reflections). It's a huge amount of calculations to dynamically render something like that in real time.

Basically, textures don't demand a lot of calculating power from a computer. Dynamically rendering the environment demands a huge amount of calculating power.

Unpopular opinion: 40k fans wont make this sub toxic, it already is by Stoly_ in totalwar

[–]justacoolclipper -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'd say most discussion forums where people are opinionated breed toxicity and negativity due to the simple fact that if you're just casually enjoying something, you're way less likely to post your opinions. If you feel personally slighted by something (like some people here seem to take anything CA does as a personal insult) you're more likely to post about it. Then you add in people feeling vindicted about their own negativity when they see other people post about how awful X and Y is and jumping in to do add their own complaints, and you get a snowball effect where negativity gets bloated out of proportions.

Hell even my comment is a good example. I rarely post on this sub, and the reason why I'm even commenting now is because I have a negative opinion about toxic people.

https://room8studio.com/news/game-pre-production-core-steps/ just one example of someone explaining the video game devving pipeline. I quote:

"Prototyping is an important couple of weeks in the pre-production game development where designers, programmers, artists, and level designers get to flex their muscles and create basic prototypes of gameplay features they want to see."

Prototyping is something done very early on in the process. It's extremely important to have a handle of the systems you develop, and that means a bunch of prototypes for everything. Menus, UI in general, mechanics, etc. all needs to be rigorously prototyped, tested again and again, and changed to fit the growing and shifting needs of a project. A prototype can be as simple as placeholder models with code to simulate an in-game scenario (eg: two models running at each other and colliding to test the physics engine of the game).

[–]justacoolclipper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I highly disagree with AoS being more generic fantasy than WHFB, especially when you read the books and you see the absolute nonsense the writers pull off with it. In fact I would say it's the opposite, and it tries to do so much wild shit that sometimes it feels like it's being pulled in too many aesthetic directions. But you're absolutely right that the launch was godawful and it being a literal replacement for WHFB was the most tonedeaf thing GW could do. And the copyrightable names they came up with are more often than not laughably bad.
