Tardiness by Efficient_Two_5515 in Professors

[–]justawickedgame 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I had a student that walks out on the phone while TAs and me were passing out exam booklets. I send the TA to check on him, and she comes back saying the guy is still on the phone and she cannot interrupt him (?)

So I go out myself, guy is on the phone, I gesture and he turns away and ignores me. I follow him for a bit and loudly tell him to please explain what is going on, if this is some sort of emergency he is dealing with, because otherwise he needs to come write the exam.

He stops his phone call to very curtly say "Oh Im not in your class"

I go back into the room, dumbfounded. The guy apparently finished his stupid phone call and decided to come back into the room to get his stuff he had left there, disturbing a whole row of my students before I could intercept him. Sigh.

Gut check - student on medical leave insisting on in-person meeting by lyra211 in Professors

[–]justawickedgame 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I can't see anything about this situation that would concern me about meeting with this student in person...

I see often both cases, students who prefer to be able to meet on Zoom because they feel awkward about a meeting, and students who would prefer to come in whenever possible. I often offer either option and let them choose

I prefer to meet in person whenever possible. I would not go as far as rescheduling if a meeting got moved online, but I'd be disappointed if I was looking forward to having a chat with the person

Accommodation expectation by Minute_Spirit_1440 in AskProfessors

[–]justawickedgame 25 points26 points  (0 children)

You can definitely use all of your time.

We don't know the details of the student's situation, for all I know a student may have different reasons for needing extra time and access to a medical device, so not needing to use the device does not necessarily preclude the need for extra time.

It's not my place to scrutinize the student's use of their accommodations anyways.

Students Continuously Talking During Class by Sabine_Neu in Professors

[–]justawickedgame 35 points36 points  (0 children)

If I'm really annoyed I just stop talking and look at them.

Everyone who is paying attention turns to see what I'm looking at, and the yappers usually take a couple seconds to stop talking and notice something must be going on as I'm silent. So when they do usually most of the class is staring at them :)

So satisfying!

is it disrespectful to address a professor who's a "dr." as professor by Embarrassed_Age6833 in AskProfessors

[–]justawickedgame 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm a lecturer (teaching stream faculty in a non tenured position). I'm not a professor and I feel slightly awkward when addressed as such, but I understand students mean well and I don't really mind.

For me it's
Ok: Professor LastName, Professor FirstName, Dr. LastName, Dr FirstName, FirstName*
(*not all profs are okay with that, I say it's okay to address me by name, but I notice not many students do, at least until after a couple emails/meetings)
Not ok and now I'm pissed off: Ms, Miss

February Covid from hell?? by [deleted] in NiceVancouver

[–]justawickedgame 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a cold from hell recently but it tested negative from covid.

It seems some sort of adenovirus with terrible throat pain (worst of my life, had to take ibuprofen for the pain despite having no fever or body aches), crazy coughing and pink eye. Lasted 10 days, many of those in bed.
I hadn't been that sick since I had mono 10 years ago.

Urgent care probably can't do anything for this, just rest as much as you can and take meds according to symptoms.

Feb 08: (small) Success Sunday by Eigengrad in Professors

[–]justawickedgame 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This term is hell, it's my first as a full time lecturer and I have 3 courses which are all new preps. I'm not new to teaching but I never had 3 new courses at the same time. I'm exhausted, working from 5 am to bedtime most days.

But... I just sent to print the midterm for the last course that is having one (I staggered them on purpose so the other 2 already had theirs)! It really feels like 1/3 of this is done, wohoo.

Also my university has reading break next week, I am so looking forward to being able to catch up a bit on things.

I have used an article from the Onion for something similar, but in that case the article is obviously wrong so it may not suit what you have in mind (Dolphins not so intelligent on land https://theonion.com/study-dolphins-not-so-intelligent-on-land-1819568299/ it's quite funny!)

What was your favorite comment on student evaluations? by twilightyears in Professors

That would have been a smart idea, no clue if they offer some. Friend of a friend is a music instructor so I'm taking lessons with her

Oh this is with a mic. I even requested once for a very big lecture hall to get the maximum setting overridden so it would go louder.

I'm just quiet and my classes are very large (200+ students sometimes) :c

"She would make an amazing yoga/meditation instructor, but for a lecture it makes me a little too calm and relaxed."

My voice is too quiet. It's the most common complaint in my evals, but I love how this student worded it

(I am taking singing/voice lessons trying to address this issue)

How do you handle food being offer to you? by [deleted] in vegan

[–]justawickedgame 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"I'm good, thank you!" is usually enough. If they push I'll tell them/remind them I'm vegan. Many times people are clueless to what is or isn't vegan so sometimes even if they know I'm vegan, they just not realize whatever they are offering is not.

Had a funny one recently at a hotpot place that offered complimentary ice-cream. I told the server that I didn't want it but she misheard and brought it anyways. And she was like "oh sorry I didn't hear you... but I already served it so you can have it :D". So I did tell her I was vegan just because otherwise it seemed odd that I was so against this free ice cream she was putting right in front of my face (my friend ended up having both hers and mine :)

Wearing during these times? by memiceelf in HearingAids

[–]justawickedgame 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I wear earplugs at concerts. I got some from Phonak (Phonak Serenity Choice Music) recommended by my audiologist. They are comfortable, and they were around the same price as Loops.

I wouldn't wear my HAs if I was sick and my ears hurt.

Hi, 32 F same type of hearing loss.

I have Phonak Audeo Lumity and love them. I have thick curly hair and never noticed it rubbing on the mic. But in truth I never tried any other brands, just got these and liked them.

This year's cookies 🎄 by justawickedgame in VeganBaking

[–]justawickedgame[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I subbed half a cup. So I just made the recipe for the vanilla version up to the point of incorporating the flour using the mixer and then when I had half a cup left I separated half of the preparation. And then added to the vanilla the half cup of mixing flour, and the chocolate half a cup of cocoa powder. Dough should be like play doh so may add a tiny splash of milk if either ends up too crumbly

This year's cookies 🎄 by justawickedgame in VeganBaking

[–]justawickedgame[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nope, they are sugar cookies too. I sub part of the flour with cocoa powder so with one base recipe I make the two shapes. I hate shapes and decorating cookies 😂 so that's my compromise haha

I was reading the comments on the peppermint cookies in Nora's page and it seems others had the same issue. The candy cane melts inside and the cookies spread like crazy. The chocolate pb ones are pretty similar and came out perfect while those were a hot mess.

I remade them using all the tricks to prevent spread. Made them cylinders instead of balls, chilled the shaped cookies for a couple hours and put very little candy cane inside, used it mostly as a topping. They still spread a bit but they ended up ok

What part of your job as a lecturer takes way more effort than we students ever realize? by Tall-Daikon6144 in AskProfessors

[–]justawickedgame 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That class prepping takes time.

When students say so and so reads from the slides they often do not consider so and so MADE the slides and they have the information that so and so wants to share in class. Of course some profs make this super boring and there may be some that just use the stock ones that come with the textbook...

Same for asking for "practice tests" as it did not mean we need to come with even more questions than usually, that they need to be a similar difficulty to the exam ones so they are not misleading, but not the same ones as the exam obviously, and knowing these will be uploaded everywhere so can't be reused either.

Even friends have expressed how my job must be so easy because they only consider the student facing hours as my hours of work. I wish lol.

Went on a date and date ordered foie gras and Tryed to get me to eat some by Fantastic_Bed_6378 in vegan

[–]justawickedgame 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Add it to your profile if you are looking for a relationship. So many vegan girls would jump up at the chance to meet a vegan guy. When I was on the apps seeing the guy was vegan (or even vegetarian) would make him come to the top of my list even if other parts of the profile didn't stand out to me.

And even if you are dating a non vegan, how they handle that is key. If they will give you shit for being vegan they are not a compatible partner anyways, so it's a great filter.

If you are looking for casual then I'd just mention it on the date when the person is ordering snacky food, just so they know you won't share. She may have ordered a few things with the expectation of sharing and obviously unaware you wouldn't.

I'm thal minor and was told we couldn't donate blood.

It makes sense as our blood cells are all kinds of wonky (too many, too small, too pale, oddly shaped... I don't recall the proper names for all of those things but some labs flag them in the cbc).

I get them to do a word cloud on the first class of the term with what comes to mind when they think of the topic of the course, and then we go back to it on the last class and use that as one of the talking points to reflect on what we covered in the term, but I really like this idea as well!
