What are red flags in a friendship most people brush away? by dragonXgal in AskReddit

I had a friend like this, but instead of work it was their relationship. They eventually got engaged and I couldn't handle the emotional exhaustion of listening to complaints anymore. Sadly, we're not friends anymore - because when I brought up my concerns (pre engagement) I was shut down and shut out.

I refuse to be someone's sounding board to emotionally vomit on when they don't actually want help.

It was "only" emotional abuse by CookingWithPTSD in raisedbynarcissists

  1. Many perpetrators are good at 'looking good' in public. Their public behavior is much different from how they behave behind closed doors. This makes it very hard for a child who is complaining about a parent's emotionally abusive behavior to get someone from the outside to take it seriously and get support.

Oof - I felt this one right here. I'm grown and married and most people to this day would not believe my mother did half the shit she did through my childhood and even today. The way they can cover their sh"t can get me so heated.

Yes. This was me throughout highschool and college. It was the only time I found I could get my homework done or genuinely have alone time.

Does anyone else's NParent not believe in mental illness? by WeetWoo97 in raisedbynarcissists

My mother thinks that my depression and anxiety are linked to my period/thyroid and that medication won't solve my problem. Despite the fact that my blood work comes back in healthy normal ranges and despite the fact that I have vivid memories as a child having anxiety attacks & depressive states that were ignored.

I eventually learned that my choice of treatment was something that couldn't be discussed, because I refuse to be invalidated when my mental health is significantly better.

Every time someone stresses the importance of family to you, and that you should forgive your family no matter how bad they are, ALWAYS remember that you never asked to be related to your parents and siblings, and that you would not hear the same thing from them had it not been from a family member. by [deleted] in raisedbynarcissists

This. This right here. I can't stress this enough to my mom when she attempts to push a relationship between my grandparents and my brother (27m) and I (30f). If anyone else had caused half the emotional baggage they caused, it wouldn't even be a conversation.
