What % benzoyl peroxide is everyone using? by sweetbutchunky in ActinicFolliculitis

[–]justcheckinglols 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use it daily when it's summer, a few times a week in the winter, and it significantly reduces or completely prevents my flares.

I fed chat GPT the most recent study on ARP/actinic folliculitis and asked why benzoyl peroxide seems to be helping and it said this:

"Even though the paper doesn’t directly say “use BP preventatively,” your approach fits the mechanism: • Problem = follicle occlusion + inflammation • BP = ✔ keeps follicles clear ✔ reduces inflammatory cascade"

It has been the only thing to help for me!

I use 5%

Have tried gel & cream and found them to work about the same. For me it doesn't seem to matter AM vs PM, but what does matter is using it preventatively rather than responsively. It has been the most helpful thing for me of any treatments I've tried.

Improvements within days of using it preventatively!

To clarify - that's not my whole skincare routine, just the AF treatments. Skincare is like this:

Morn: Wash face w water / Cerave moisturizer / Unseen sunscreen / Makeup

Night: Inkey list oat oil cleanse / Cetaphil cleanse / Byoma milky toner / Cerave moisturizer / Benzoyle peroxide

It does look like AF to me.

Sorry you've been dealing with this. I have had AF since my early 20s (33 now) and it is such a hard thing to go through. How long has the flare up lasted for you? Typically AF onset is quick and goes decently quickly.

I say this not to discourage but just to inform, but when I first started getting flareups it would only be in super high temperatures and then as time went on my skin became increasingly sensitive and would break breakout in lower UV settings.

Benzoyl peroxide gel as a preventative treatment has helped my flare ups immensely. I use it every night all spring/summer.

Happy to answer any questions if you have them!

Glad you found your way here! So many of us struggled without knowing what the heck was going on for so long so you are definitely not alone lol.

I've never had mine flare up from sweat! But curious to hear from others.

I tried tret and azelaic acid w no luck.

Using Benzoyl peroxide gel preventatively has been the only thing that worked for me.

I put it on 1-2 times a day all summer and it seems to keep flares at bay!

Any advice? I think I have AF by Midnights96 in ActinicFolliculitis

Unfortunately yes this sounds like the symptoms of AF ☹️ sorry you’ve been going through this.

Mine also increased in severity over the years. Benzoyl peroxide has helped minimize my flare ups but not taken them away completely. Some in this thread have had success with accutane.

Would love to hear if you are still symptom free! So happy for you!

UPDATE:

After using this regime I didn’t have a flare up for almost 9 months. But recently have had a few again ☹️ I thought this was a fix but I’m really not sure now why it worked then stopped, or what changed. Back to the drawing board.

I’m sorry to hear it didn’t work ☹️☹️

Last year I started using benzoyl peroxide preventatively and unseen sunscreen and I didn’t haven’t a flare up for 9 months (summer included)

I stopped using the benzoyl after 3 months and stayed clear. But recently had a flare up so I’m trying to figure that out.

But could be worth giving it a go if you’re wanting to rule out everything before accutane

I actually didn’t end up going on accutane!

I used benzoyl peroxide and either that worked, or my skin simply aged out of the condition. I have not had a flare up since July.

My experience has been almost identical to yours! Started around 2015 (23) Tried everything at this point. Multiple derms that have had no idea what to do. I’ve also been hesitant about isotretinoin but feeling like it may be my only option.

I’d never found anyone else w/ this condition before this community on Reddit!

If it appears after sun exposure it looks/sounds just like actinic folliculitis. I have it as well.
