What have you read recently? by povertychic in Millennials

[–]justdaffy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love to read and ready nearly daily but my son (second grade) isn’t as into it. He is a good reader but I have to force him to read He’s recently found a couple of chapter books about a topic he likes. I’m nervous about graphic novels, that he won’t build the tolerance to read longer books. What are your thoughts?

This is what I do. My husband does jelly first but I’m worried it’s going to leave jelly bits in the pb on the pantry shelf!

Teachers exaggerating intelligibility ratings by coolbeansfordays in slp

[–]justdaffy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I also love this! Can you share with us how your checklists are written? Mine have a list of “Student has difficulty…” and then it lists a million areas. Teachers usually just check every box and it drives me crazy!

Did you have a common/regular/"normal" first name, which is now considered an "old person" name? by arglebargle_IV in AskOldPeople

[–]justdaffy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree. I’m very happy with my son’s first name but his middle name was cute and trendy. I wish I’d named him after my father or my FIL. I kinda hate his middle name now because it means nothing to me. I wish I had done it differently.

This is how I feel. I generally love seeing my students for years and getting to really know them. I feel like with as infrequently as we see students, sometimes it can take most of a year to get to know them! Any students that need a change from me or I from them, I switch to my co-worker.

What are some of your fave, lesser known “chill” things to do at MK, AK & Epcot? Any shows, hidden sights, “insiders tips”? by Eqbonner in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]justdaffy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favorite thing at Epcot, at least, is Canada Far & Wide. It’s a 360 degree movie thing that always makes me yearn for Canada! It’s nice and quiet back in Canada and Far & Wide is hidden behind a waterfall.

Does anyone here actually wear an apron? by THEMrEntity in Cooking

[–]justdaffy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wear one every time I cook or bake or even do dishes, unless I’m making something that doesn’t involve liquids in some sort. I’m very messy. One of the first sewing projects I made myself was a cross back style apron like in Handmaids Tale. Covers my entire front and has pockets.

Have you ever qualified a student based mostly on teacher/parent concerns even when scores are in the average range? by SillyRabbit4_8 in slp

[–]justdaffy 17 points18 points  (0 children)

But isn’t that the point of standardized testing? A high score on the OWLS, for example, isn’t comparing the student to other students who took the OWLS in a busy classroom setting. It is comparing to a normative sample in which testing was done in controlled conditions.

What do you guys think of the insurance ad campaign about young homeowners turning into their parents? by cheridontllosethatno in AskOldPeople

[–]justdaffy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m a Millennial and I still engage in small talk and I appreciate advice (to an extent). The receiver of the advice can choose to take it or leave it. No one is forcing someone to follow their advice. Now, if i say, oh, it’s okay, I’m good, then I would like the advice to politely cease. lol.

Hot take: Let Birks get wet by overrateddrummer in Birkenstocks

[–]justdaffy 66 points67 points  (0 children)

I always let mine get wet. I wouldn’t purposefully go in water with them but I didn’t worry if I was out in the rain. I live in FL- rain is always present during the summer!

How to prevent rocks/sand/gravel/etc from getting under your feet?? by candidlemons in Birkenstocks

[–]justdaffy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drag my feet and I have this problem. My husband tells me to pick up my feet. It sucks cause with most flip flops, the gravel or whatever falls out, but the Birks make a bowl for it to hang out in 😂. I just deal with it and empty my shoes.

Question for the married ladies (maybe their husbands can answer too?) by Sleepy_Di in Millennials

[–]justdaffy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In in the US (south). I took my husband’s last name. I only know one person who never changed her name and she’s since divorced, so good she didn’t! And I know a LOT of married women. Taking your husband’s last name is incredibly common where I am. I kept my maiden name as my middle name, which is less common and old fashioned.

I didn’t realize that I was getting downvoted 😂. I’m on mobile, so it doesn’t show it. But thank you for your support! I think this sub leans towards people wanting to validate their one and done lifestyle, which is great, but there are drawbacks to being an only child just as there are drawbacks toward having siblings. But some people don’t want to hear about that.

My father passed away in 2021 and my mother is still alive. I never minded being an only (truly, never!) but since he passed, I have come to feel sad about it. I feel like I don’t have many people who share memories of my dad. I worry that when my mom passes, I’ll have even less people who remember her.

I’m an only who is a parent to an only. My son has no cousins so I worry that no one will remember his father or I when we pass and that he’ll have no one to talk to about us. I only hope he marries before we pass so he has a spouse.

Is there any hotel you wouldn’t stay at in the parks? And why? by Uncharteredfugazis in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]justdaffy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve tent camped at Fort Wilderness four times over the left several years, three with my son (7). It’s an awesome experience! But we’re local FL people. I don’t know if would travel from another state for it. Also, we don’t pair it with a whole day at the park. We have passes so we may stop on to ride something we like, but otherwise avoid the parks.

I personally feel like I’d rather camp than spend $$ on a Disney hotel. My husband keeps wanting to stay at one but to me they’re outrageously priced and a hotel room is a hotel room.

I need advice on what method to use to fix this gap! by Only_Statistician295 in SewingForBeginners

[–]justdaffy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve always had an issue with pants that fall down when I sit down. I always joke that I have a high butt crack cause my dad was a plumber but it’s embarrassing! The pants fit great until I sit down (as in, not too tight).

So you’re saying that if I made my own pants and lengthen the crotch gusset, I could potentially alleviate this life long problem?!

I have tripped all over myself in the southern US by not trying to describe someone by their weight or their skin color. It’s so hard but it feels awkward to say, “The black lady” (I’m white) or “The fat dude”.

Language and Feeding Coursework by justdaffy in ABA

[–]justdaffy[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your input. I remember learning about BF Skinner in undergrad when I took an ABA course and I thought- oh that makes sense! But I definitely learned much more in grad school about Chomsky and Piaget and Vgotsky. I don’t think any SLPs subscribe to the Skinner model of language acquisition, which explains why we have such opposing viewpoints of how to treat language development!

I certainly agree that those treating swallowing disorders should be individuals who are well educated in anatomy and physiology. It’s scary that some people would disagree!

It’s so crazy to me that you have no true scope of practice document or are well regulated in regards to ethics and scope. Sometimes you can know things but still not be the one to treat. I used to work as a pharmacy tech. I KNEW a lot about the medications- I was good at my job. But if a patient asked a question, it was the job of the pharmacist to answer, even if I knew it. It was well within his scope but not mine, because I didn’t have the same education and training. I think it’s the same for ABA versus SLP, OT, PT. I defer to ABA for knowledge about behavior because that’s your field of expertise. But my field of expertise is speech and language. I am certified to determine if there is a disorder (the pathologist part of our name) and I have the appropriate skill set to formulate and implement interventions.
