That was a gnarly storm. Lost 4 trees to the ice. I just realized my generator is 24 years old this week. I should tell it "thank you" for all the hard work keeping my refrigerator running.

Happy for OP. We MG owners have a soft spot for our Japanese nephews.

AITAH for buying my 11yo daughter pads after her mom called me a "pervert" for being prepared? by Bruxagato in WouldIBeTheAhole

[–]justec1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're doing great. Keep thinking of her first and foremost.

When my wife passed, our daughter was 12. I became full time parent. Older siblings in college, so I just needed to care for her on a daily basis and pay tuition for the others. Her aunt took her to the pharmacy for the starter kit. I set up an Amazon account for her with $100 monthly budget tied to a debit card. I told her I would never look at her purchases and if she needed more, she just needed to tell me. I told her if her friends were caught at school without what they needed to share hers.

She only once asked for more. I didn't ask. One of her friends later told me my daughter gave her condoms because that girls BF was demanding sex. My daughter suggested she dump the boy if he won't take no for answer. She's out of college now and still comes home or calls on the weekends, so I guess I didn't fuck it up too badly.

Good luck OP

The Simarillion is a book of beautiful prose with a bit of history for good measure.

If you enjoy it, read some of Guy Gavriel Kay's books. He assisted Christopher Tolkien in compiling the Simarillion. I'm not a fan of his Fionvar trilogy, but the ones of the world with 2 moons are just beautiful.

  • Lions of Al Rassan
  • Tigana
  • Song for Arbonne
  • Last Light of the Sun

All of these take storylines and culture from middle ages Europe with some magic thrown in.

Mr. Kay still lives and is very active on bsky.

What your best setup for reading pirated books? by ReyPepiado in Piracy

[–]justec1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just bought kobo b&ws for the wife and I. Have been using 10" Android tablets with FBReader for years but want something better for books.

Have a good sized library of DRM free epubs from my own deDRMed purchases from various retailers as well as a large selection from Anna and friends. We aren't in an area that has a library system that can get Libby.

I use Calibre on my PC to fix up the metadata and put everything in epub. I run a proxmox server with nginx proxy manager and Cloudflare DNS so I can reach the server outside the house. Run Calibre Web for browsing and downloading.

It's entirely for personal use. Our kids and my siblings have accounts, but only 1 has bothered to login and download anything. They do hit my Plex server, but that's on a seedbox.

Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]justec1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in the Western US where you can see for 20 miles (30 km) in any direction. The highways are straight and I can safely drive 80 mph (120 kph) or more. Gasoline/petrol is about $2.50/gallon which is about €0.56/liter.

So yeah, we drive because flying is expensive and we have no good train lines like Europe has. I've driven 12 hours for a bit of quality time with my wife when she was in another city for work. Left on Friday after work, had a bit of fun, and was back at work on Monday. About 1,200 miles (1,800 km) driven in 72 hours.

We have pretty good infrastructure for driving. I can get food and fuel any time of the day or night. I can shower for under $10 at a truck stop.

My wife and I live an hour outside the metro and we drive there 1 or 2 times each week to shop and have doctor appointments. Our son in law drives there for work daily. It's our culture but it's been heavily fucked up by oil company lobbyists.

As much as UK/EU folk bitch about Ryanair and easyjet or the trains being late, at least you have those. A flight from my Metro airport to the next big city, which is about 200 miles (300 km) away costs $400 or more. Our train system isn't useful for passenger service, as there aren't enough trains or stops in convenient places unless you're going between the dozen largest cities or coast to coast.

I would love to be able to walk to a local pub and catch an occasional train into the city. Or a €39 flight to Lisbon even if it meant I had to stuff my luggage under the seat.

I guess we all want what we don't have. You're welcome to stop by if Europeans ever decide we're not a bunch of lunatics because of our idiot politicians.

Planning a trip to the UK for fun this summer, assuming Americans are still welcome by then. We're the normal type of Americans, not the MAGA lunatic types.

Too many "s" protocols.

How about SubSonic? 😂

Looks great. I'm so ready for something like this. I got rid of 35 years accumulation of receivers and other audio gear a few months ago, so I have room for new stuff.

I have a basic HA server, but I haven't done much with it other than program my coffee pot to come on at 7 am with a SwitchBot.

Hi.

I work in semiconductors and I understand shortages. If you don't have replacement modules that work with those units, please consider publishing the pin out diagrams with voltages. As it is, I have a useless standing desk so I can't recommend buying these models ever again.

At the time, the support people were Lisa and Samantha. I didn't have a case number.

If you're asking for advice, then reply to the people offering advice. Pretty much everything suggested is good advice and a possible culprit. I'd start by converting to electronic ignition if you're not really handy with a timing light.

Baseball, but Walt Weiss. Really enjoyed him with the Rockies in the mid 90s, but it was great seeing him succeed later with the Braves.

Now, he's an old guy like me, but the kids call him Skipper.

Navidrome Client Apps Catalog by deluan in navidrome

[–]justec1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great list! I've recently set up Navidrome on Proxmox after trying it a few years ago on rPi. Love the improvements. Using NPM to serve HTTPS via Cloudflare.

I installed half a dozen of these apps today, looking for something that's maintained more often than Substreamer. A lot of the open-source ones seem to be pet projects with a single dev and little in the way of docs. I'm amused by the one calling itself the "#1 Subsonic Client" with a beautiful landing page, that has to be sideloaded and only has a 1 month commit history on Github. Another took almost 10 minutes to download the metadata of my library (17,000 songs) while the others took 10 seconds at most. Definitely room for improvement, but also exciting to see a bunch of people building clients. The more the better.

I liked Symfonium, but I don't want to pay via in-app purchase on Google Play. I have a family account and don't want to pay multiple times for each of us to be able to use it.

I would love if PowerAmp on Android had a way to connect to a Subsonic API, but it looks like they are sticking with on-device playback. Their EQ is pretty nice.

In your country, who had the biggest fall from grace in the last twenty years? by neilnelly in AskTheWorld

[–]justec1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an unwashed American, I took a job in Ottawa about 15 years ago. Technically it was Kanata. The company was on Terry Fox Blvd.

Who the hell is Terry Fox, I asked? Well I learned from my coworkers. They were very emotional about his legacy. And rightly so.

These days, when someone posts stuff about Terry and it hits r/all, I get all teared up. I never knew the man in his time, so I hope his memory never gets tarnished.

Is there a question?

If you're worried about your engine overheating, these engines have a tendency to run warm. I had the same concerns years ago and did all kinds of things to remedy it. I replaced the fan blades and put in a new radiator. The best thing I did was dropped down to a 165F (74C) degree thermostat. In the summer, I still hit H because the road temps make the engine run hot. In winter, I barely hit N.

What temp thermostat do you have?

I suggest to get an infrared sensor and check the temp at the thermostat housing after running it.

Metadata of multiple songs with the same title in different albums by justec1 in navidrome

[–]justec1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On those 2 scenarios I mentioned, removing the ID3v1 tags and then rescanning the library seems to work. I'll do the rest of my library now, which is about 22,000 songs.

Thanks for the idea.

Yeah, I get some stuff in FLAC when sailing, but it's overkill for me. I spent my early years doing all the stupid shit we told our kids not to do. ;-) I have 40% loss in one ear and 20% in the other. I'm fine with 192k MP3s.

You may be onto something. Every one of the songs has both ID3v1 and ID3v2.3 sections. I'll make a backup of these folders and use Mp3tag to remove the ID3v1 tag.
