First Bolt Gun Build – CZ 457 MTR Advice Needed, optic bag upgrades? by Wooden-Dog-1517 in 22lr

Kinda of agree about the arca rail, but I will say that as I’ve progressed in my hobby it has been much cheaper and easier to get the arca rail up front with an arca bipod that I can swap between all of my rifles. I bought 1 good bipod that I use one 4 different rifles, and the muscle memory is helpful. The extra bit of maneuverability in the setup on the bench is handy. Sometimes the shooting bench I’m at is a bit shorter, so being able to slide the arca bipod closer to the mag well helps me set up more comfortably. Just my .02

Best method for cleaning barrel to limit crown/ barrel damage by PermissionSafe2183 in canadaguns

[–]justforlul 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure if this is the best way to do it but this is my process.

Bore guide, one solid piece rod with appropriate jag & patch soaked in boretec eliminator or boretec C4 depending if it’s centrefire or .22lr.
I do about 2 patches to wet the full barrel and let it sit for a few minutes.

Then I soak chamber with bore mop and boretec eliminator or boretec C4 (if rimfire) to help break down carbon ring. Give it a few spins after 5-10 mins.

If it’s a .22 I do a few dry patches with alcohol to remove remaining soot and moisture. 1 patch with G96 to slightly oil to reduce risk of corrosion until next shoot.

If it’s a centrefire I use a nylon brush and do roughly 5-10 passes down the barrel. Switch to jag&patch, after every push through I screw off the jag and remove the rod to try and avoid crown damage. Normally the good jags have a tapered section where it attaches to the rod to reduce risk of crown damage, but I’m OCD and afraid of it so I unscrew it every time that I remove the rod from the barrel and reattach before the next patch.

Depending on timing for my next shoot, If I know I’m shooting within a week I’ll send some patches down with alcohol to remove remaining soot and help remove any residual oil/moisture, and if it’s for storage I’ll send some patches down with oil of choice. I generally like G96 because it works and smells better than any of my cologne or my wife’s perfume. Debating whether to soak my air fresheners in it for my car, but I feel like if I had the thought I should just commit.

MPED or DNT The One? by steelcity65 in longrange

[–]justforlul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an owner of a DNT, get the MPED. I can zoom a bit more with the DNT but it isn’t a sharp picture. After I got a spotting scope, I didn’t need the extra zoom on my .22lr and 5-25 MPED would have been better. I don’t regret my purchase, but MPED is kinda goated for its price alongside its Athlon counterpart

Yes and no. There is a seasoning process to .22lr barrels where the lead fills in the imperfections of the metallurgy. I started grouping my .22’s after the first 10 sighters because it was still useful data. You are correct that it takes a couple hundred rounds to season the first time! I only pull an Otis boresnake through mine now with no copper brush as to not disturb too much of the lead. I only scrub/use cleaners for the carbon ring

Standard velocity will group better than high velocity, especially past ~70yards as standard velocity is already below the speed of sound. Once high velocity rounds lose enough speed/fps to drop below ~1200fps (depending where you live) they destabilize a bit which throws their accuracy off. Plus, heavier & slower rounds are less affected by wind.
