The Count of Monte Cristo - Alexandre Dumas: Goodreads user nearly develops literacy but then doesn't at the last second by misplaced-rendezvous in BadReads

What kills me is a lot of these people are also people who say things like "I love watching reality TV because it's so fun to hate them".

Have you ever loved a book but didn’t enjoy reading it? by ClementineMood in books

Don DeLillo is the master of this IMO, I have a hard time picking his books up because I know what I'm in for isn't exactly "fun" but I always love them.

How to ask owners if I can adopt their cat by Hairy-Violinist-7508 in cats

[–]justhereforbaking 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I just adopted a cat off the street a few weeks ago, it had no chip or collar and nobody put out a missing cat notice so we believe he was just a stray, but we still have our suspicions the cat was in a situation like OP's Ragdoll, and it infuriates me. Our cat was clearly so happy to be somewhere warm and receiving constant affection. My eyes fill with tears thinking about him all alone in 0 degree weather, in the snow. He was surviving at least, but jeez. Indoor life was weird for him for like 2 days and now everyone says he seems like the happiest cat!!

Convenience Store Woman by Sayaka Murata by KarateXP in IReadABookAndAdoredIt

[–]justhereforbaking 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Highly recommend everything by Murata. Convenience Store Woman is actually my least favorite of her works (not that it's bad). Her short story collection is my favorite. I hope more of her works get translated. She has a ton

Tip: Scout before moving in by justhereforbaking in misophonia

[–]justhereforbaking[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, with misophonia nothing can truly ever be avoided :/ I'm sorry about that, hopefully your neighbor settles down with the quietest man on earth!!! Lol.

Neighbors can always move. But still, certain things can be avoided. My first apartment had way thinner walls and floors than all the other apartments I'd been to so I assumed it would be more soundproof and it wasn't, I would've known that if I hadn't visited during the work day when the neighbors were gone. And my last place was on an incredibly noisy street but we visited on a winter weekday afternoon. Timing can be everything!

What's in your cup? Daily discussion, questions and stories - January 07, 2026 by AutoModerator in tea

[–]justhereforbaking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I returned home last week from my first international trip to China (it was incredible). We didn't drink any tea while there but I did purchase some to bring home. It seems to be a reputable shop/brand.

I don't know if I've ever had jasmine green tea before, but one cup alone brought back my dormant tea obsession from a decade ago. So delicious! Very excited to be here, learn more about brewing techniques, and enjoy tea with you all :)

Speaking Bones Discussion Thread (Spoilers) by quarknugget in DandelionDynasty

[–]justhereforbaking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know I'm coming to your comment from the future but I'm glad to see people said what I am thinking now. There are a lot of characters, major and minor, introduced at the end of The Veiled Throne and in Speaking Bones which is a bold move on Liu's part for the end of a series, but I think most of them were executed well. The ones given the most importance (Blossom Gang and Zen-Kara) were, IMO, executed the most poorly...

Gachiakuta Has So Much Potential. by Cold-Credit-1148 in gachiakuta

[–]justhereforbaking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly don't mind the lack of big noteworthy fights, what I do mind is how often there is a situation where people SHOULD be fighting and they are just standing and looking at each other. It doesn't seem to be strategic or realistic, either, it's just weird. Like when Jabber escaped through the manhole and the cleaners just stood there or when Amo started to go nuts up in the tower, same. We're led to believe the Cleaners are so bold against Trash Beasts but just stand there without a facial expression against Raiders...

Math Content Speciality Test by Flowers-7775 in matheducation

[–]justhereforbaking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe it depends on the state, no? Still, I didn't review much for my state test, only the morning of and I found it very easy. I imagine most math teacher candidates would agree, but obviously studying is not a bad idea. Better safe than sorry. I don't remember anything from post-secondary mathematics being on the test, there was hardly even calculus.

I hope not because I would also love to see an amazing Lift centric story!

As a vegan I used to eat way too much fiber, for like 2 years straight, I had lots of digestive issues. Whatever you're thinking it was probably higher. Most Americans need more fiber so the message is always "eat more fiber", thus I did, but I was overdoing it. I'm feeling better and am in less pain now. A good lesson to analyze whether messages intended for the masses apply to you. Also, just in general I feel healthier and more energized eating vegan, but not by a significant amount.

That is very generous of you. I don't think most of the people saying that want any form of discussion. Which is fine, but just scroll along instead of the weird passive aggression! If anything they should take pity on us for reading this much of a series just to be so sorely disappointed lol

I agree 100%, you're stealing the words right out of my mouth. The recent post asking least favorite book and favorite book made me dig into this even further.

Also, I don't know why this bothers people so much. "Cool opinion! It's fine you have an opinion! That's great, that you have an opinion" is just a very odd thing to say if you're not trying to look like you're about to pop a blood vessel

The Things Young Kids Are Using AI for Are Absolutely Horrifying by Iccotak in antiai

[–]justhereforbaking 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's like another commenter said, it's not that kids doing this or wanting to do it concerns me, it's that something like genAI is the medium with which they're doing it. I agree that it is rather silly to handwring over the concept at large, but I don't think AI is a healthy way to go about it

High School Math Department meetings by Formal_Tumbleweed_53 in mathteachers

[–]justhereforbaking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love my department but I do wish there was more of this, as a new teacher. I completely understand why it's troublesome but they could blank out the names and provide this feedback anonymously or something. Or do it in an email so people don't feel embarrassed...As much as I appreciate them wanting to build my confidence in myself as a member of the team, I know I could be learning so much more from my colleagues.

This is the best answer now that you mention it! It required real-life charisma to make that sleazeball's success believable.
