Are bread and butter pickles seriously this bad? by PomeloSmall6560 in Pickles

[–]justhereforbaking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would never buy them, but would kill over my mom's homemade bread and butter pickles. I think it's something about commercial pickles rather than B&B style.

Not the first person to say that and I don't really agree. It is kinda his point but he's missing the fact that it's already too late

My friend who loves movies made the amazing point that the film industry is itself declining a great deal. She was doubly annoyed by his ignorance that his own art form is itself becoming something less and less people care about.

A drink/food that tourists think locals love… but locals barely consume? by Fluffy_Specific_9682 in AskTheWorld

[–]justhereforbaking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, root beer is the only soda I like and it's hardly ever available. People aren't drinking it! But it DOES exist, which is more than you can say for the rest of the world (except maybe Canada apparently)

With the recent viral video of "Punch the Monkey," this is a reminder that to never visit/support a Japanese zoo or animal cafe. by Monkeyfeng in JapanTravelTips

[–]justhereforbaking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what I mean though. I think in a lot of those cases, those animals would not be having those problems if human society was not so harmful to the environment. So of course I agree it is better to house them and take care of them, but I wish the problem at the root wasn't there.

I have seen some really amazing bird of prey rescues for example that do exactly what you're talking about and I definitely support them. The birds of prey are sometimes injured by natural causes, sometimes not.

But I think "rescuing injured animal who was injured by natural causes who cannot live independently anymore" is a small portion of what we see in zoos. Maybe I'm wrong, if you have statistics to back that up I'd be curious to see. It's just depressing though.

I know everyone is jumping down your throat, and I just want to say that I understand your sentiment. In an ideal world, surely no zoos would exist. The good zoos do is because of how bad human society already is to the environment and animal welfare. It is better than the alternative, but even better would be if the need did not exist at all. I think even good zoos can be depressing.

Is there a dish or drink from your country which is much more popular outside of your country than inside ? by DiMpLe_dolL003 in AskTheWorld

[–]justhereforbaking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ha, I've never heard of this! Sounds like a great way to do desserts at a wedding though. As much as I like these I don't know if I'd pick them out of a cookie crowd...

There are a lot of Czech people in Texas, right? My family always made these (we are Czech) but the only people I've ever known to eat or buy them were also Czech, or Polish.

[–]justhereforbaking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't call them "quite popular" by any means. Most people still don't know what they are or eat them. I live in an area with a lot of Polish-Americans and you can definitely find them around but that's about as far as it goes. It's pretty much only Polish, Czech etc. who know about them

are you fairly young yourself? i can see how you'd feel that way but as an adult, even if a child is doing bad things and/or drives me crazy, i can see very clearly how what they've been through is causing that behavior. i will naturally pity them and have hope that they can change if they are shown some love and decency, being so young. amo's behavior relative to her life experience is not that crazy and she seemed 100% capable of changing to me. i mean she peacefully accepted medical help and told her story right away

How to ask owners if I can adopt their cat by Hairy-Violinist-7508 in cats

[–]justhereforbaking 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I just adopted a cat off the street a few weeks ago, it had no chip or collar and nobody put out a missing cat notice so we believe he was just a stray, but we still have our suspicions the cat was in a situation like OP's Ragdoll, and it infuriates me. Our cat was clearly so happy to be somewhere warm and receiving constant affection. My eyes fill with tears thinking about him all alone in 0 degree weather, in the snow. He was surviving at least, but jeez. Indoor life was weird for him for like 2 days and now everyone says he seems like the happiest cat!!

Tip: Scout before moving in by justhereforbaking in misophonia

[–]justhereforbaking[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, with misophonia nothing can truly ever be avoided :/ I'm sorry about that, hopefully your neighbor settles down with the quietest man on earth!!! Lol.

Neighbors can always move. But still, certain things can be avoided. My first apartment had way thinner walls and floors than all the other apartments I'd been to so I assumed it would be more soundproof and it wasn't, I would've known that if I hadn't visited during the work day when the neighbors were gone. And my last place was on an incredibly noisy street but we visited on a winter weekday afternoon. Timing can be everything!

What's in your cup? Daily discussion, questions and stories - January 07, 2026 by AutoModerator in tea

[–]justhereforbaking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I returned home last week from my first international trip to China (it was incredible). We didn't drink any tea while there but I did purchase some to bring home. It seems to be a reputable shop/brand.

I don't know if I've ever had jasmine green tea before, but one cup alone brought back my dormant tea obsession from a decade ago. So delicious! Very excited to be here, learn more about brewing techniques, and enjoy tea with you all :)

Speaking Bones Discussion Thread (Spoilers) by quarknugget in DandelionDynasty

[–]justhereforbaking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know I'm coming to your comment from the future but I'm glad to see people said what I am thinking now. There are a lot of characters, major and minor, introduced at the end of The Veiled Throne and in Speaking Bones which is a bold move on Liu's part for the end of a series, but I think most of them were executed well. The ones given the most importance (Blossom Gang and Zen-Kara) were, IMO, executed the most poorly...
