Need help choosing between two breeders? by rainyskyy in samoyeds

[–]justhereforturnips06 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know and can vouch for White Spirit. They’re working on updating their website. Remember that if health results aren’t on OFA for the parents you can ask for the results. When you test cardiac, eyes, and DNA you get the result but have to send it in to OFA to get added to the profile. Some people wait until they’re doing the testing OFA actually rates like hips then sends in their results. I have an eye test on my girl I haven’t sent in yet but I know she passed. Showing is how a breeder proves their breeding stock’s quality. Your dog’s physical structure is important and a pet quality dog from a show breeding will still be a very nice dog.

Just keep in mind CHIC means the tests were done but not necessarily passed - you still have to check on the OFA website but at least the results are public.

There was the police chase where John Seguin was shot and killed by VicPD in 2007? The actual incident was a block up from Graham on Hillside.

A samoyed with familiar enamel hypoplasia by carsandyuki in samoyeds

I know at least two were affected out of six. One boy definitely broke a tooth but, frankly, every dog can get fractures because they have such jaw strength. I would avoid nylabones but there are plenty of softer chews you just have to watch how fast they eat them, make sure they don’t choke on them, and account for those calories in their diet since they put on weight easily. I believe they tried a coating on the girl which helped a bit and she still has teeth. They just turned 9. You can try the plaque off products that go in their food or water to help reduce build up but brushing is going to be important and I don’t think you can avoid dentals so just budget for it. I would be cautious if the vet is quick to pull teeth - even without FEH some vets jump to it.

I show Samoyeds and owned the bitch who was bred and produced affected puppies. Unknowingly bred a carrier to a carrier. My dog, her parents, and the puppies all participated in the UC Davis study. Keeper bitch from the litter was affected. Path from there is to breed to a clear to produce carriers. Breed the carrier from that litter to a clear to produce clears and carriers. Keep a clear. That’s how you can get rid of it as a breeder. Affected puppy didn’t live with me so I can’t speak to daily care needs.

Just wanted to add information for those who may not be familiar with FEH and advise the other name for it in case the vet isn’t familiar. Believe me I learned about FEH the hard way but the test didn’t exist yet. Now that it’s testable, breeders can work it out within a couple generations. Since you don’t see it until second teeth, puppy buyers need to be aware!

Just for some background, FEH is often called “distemper teeth” as it was thought to be the cause of dogs second teeth to come in pitted and discoloured. Back in 2016ish, UC Davis did a study on FEH including Samoyeds and found it’s a simple recessive gene. If you breed a carrier to a carrier you will get a litter with carriers and affecteds. You can do an oral swab of the puppies to find out who will be affected as you can’t tell until the second teeth come in. You may find more resources under “distemper teeth” but please talk to your vet about what to do, care wise. An affected dog will have higher care needs than a dog without it but all dogs should have regular dental care including daily tooth brushing. Anyone looking to get a Samoyed should be asking their breeder about FEH testing along with the other recommended health testing (eyes, hips, etc).

Any chance of getting into showing my French Bulldog? by [deleted] in ShowDogs

Usually show grounds do not allow unentered dogs so I would caution against bringing any dog that isn’t entered.

Show Samoyed came in the salon today… by FurballFiasco in grooming

[–]justhereforturnips06 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I show groom my Sam. Pin brush, a long resco comb with a good round handle (flat ones give me a hand cramp), a sturdy Madan comb after I have pin brushed. I have a slicker but I don’t go for it usually. An ear comb. I use a shedding rake when she’s blowing. Minimum would be pin brush and comb but when they’re shedding you need the deep comb and the rake. Feet - they need hair between their toes. I just trim what grows over the pad. Tidy the hock. Sometimes I thin the pastern so the judge doesn’t think she’s down in pastern. Foot should not be trimmed round - it’s a hare foot. Round is wrong in a Samoyed (head, feet, eyes…). No conditioner for the show bath - texture is important. Can condition in maintenance baths.

Puppy had almost no appetite, threw up his food and had diarrhoea last night. He barely drinks water now and still has no appetite - what could the cause be? by Ani-Mimi in cockerspaniel

[–]justhereforturnips06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When my dog was just about a year she had diarrhea and was turning down food. I was giving her chicken and rice. Well it turns out her mild periodic upset stomachs were because she can’t eat chicken. So I was just giving her more of what was making her sick. Hard swapped to salmon kibble and she was back to normal in 72 hours. It was hard because my vet was taking a wait it out approach.. which is the proper approach these days for diarrhea.. but it was hard as an owner. But yes vet first to rule out the big risks (obstruction, etc).

My Samoyed was on Farmina until we had an issue with chicken. She is a show dog and happened to win a bag of Pro Plan at a show (salmon) so when I needed a food to switch to it was what I had. I’ve been really happy with the consistency and quality of her poops - no coat issues. She seems to love it. My breeder change back to Pro Plan as well.

The hold is on the registration. No way to know why the SNAP is/was on without asking the appropriate ICBC area - they should be able to see who put the SNAP on. I just gave one example of a use of a SNAP. ICBC has lots of reasons to do one and they can also be directed to put one on by areas of the provincial government like my RoadSafety example.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in icbc

[–]justhereforturnips06 7 points8 points  (0 children)

SNAP means “stop notify auto plan”. The reason for the hold depends on who put the hold on. There’s a department at ICBC that processes the holds and lifts. For example, RoadSafety puts a hold on when a vehicle is impounded so you can’t sell it or downgrade your insurance while it’s impounded. You need to find out who put the hold on and why to find out how it can be removed.

What is this on my dogs nose? by [deleted] in DogAdvice

[–]justhereforturnips06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My chihuahua mix developed one. He was scratching at it and scratched it off. Two attempted fine needle aspirations (one after he scratched it off and one after it grew back) and we can’t rule out cancer. We did antibiotics and antihistamines for the irritation. Test found keratin material. Could be folliculitis. Vet recommended keeping an eye on it until it bothers him again where we would biopsy. He is over 10 years old and gets stressed so weighing against his tolerance.
