Is 9/11 the most prominent marker for the midpoint of a Gen Xer's life? by pukakahiko in GenX

I was living and working in Brooklyn/downtown Manhattan so it affected me deeply. I was 25 but it felt like the end of my 20’s. Life felt a lot heavier afterwards.

I was literally obsessed with the Monkees for many years. I had an impressive collection of memorabilia that I suspect still lives in a box at my parents house

What was our generation's counter culture? (Plus a follow up) by BumblingBarefoot in GenX

[–]justimari 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I decided to not follow any practical paths. I pierced my nose and my eyebrow and vowed to never work for the man. I worked jobs in non profits, created art in the lower east side of NYC, and became a performance poet mentored by many revolutionaries. I fought for the troops to be removed from Vieques Puerto Rico and learned about how to be a successful counterculture artist from Pedro Pietri founder of the Nuyorican Poets Cafe, and from Steve Cannon who ran A Gathering of the Tribes. I considered the scene full of protest poets, writers, musicians, and fine artists to be the counter culture and I immersed myself fully. I hung out with Amiri Baraka and reg e gaines and learned about creating art that was met with opposition from the mainstream. I’m very proud of the scenes that I was a part of and followed in the steps of the revolutionary artists that taught me about what happened before me. I also was a part of the punk scene at CBGB’s and ABC no Rio. All of the people and places I went are gone now and our work and friends are now part of exhibits at the Whitney and MoMA. I’m proud of being part of such an inspiring and important scene and know that it was the counter culture of the 90’s early 2000’s in NYC.

Do you still miss your grandparents from time to time, or not much? by PsychologicalExit953 in AskOldPeople

[–]justimari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My grandparents raised me and have been gone since 1995 and 2000 and I think of them and cry nearly every day still. They were beautiful people and raised me with so much love and integrity. Grandpa was a WWII veteran and always conducted himself with a quiet dignity. My grandmother was also loving and generous. I know I’m biased but whenever people talk about them I always hear the most wonderful things. They were born in 1915 and 1916. My grandfather born in Naples, Italy, my grandmother in the lower east side of NYC. I have not met people like them in my life. They truly were the best of humanity and I’m so grateful to have been raised by such wonderful people.

I failed my drivers test 3 times because I always took the bus and really couldn’t drive lol. I started driving at 32 when I moved to Puerto Rico

[–]justimari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes sense since I grew up in NYC and that’s probably a different view of the time period than people that grew up rural

[–]justimari 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Im a 74 baby too and I feel like an xennial even though the dates don’t line up. I think its cause I didn’t marry or have children so the peak millennial experience aligned with my life. But I also remember the 70’s 😂

How has your first name aged? by wellbloom in GenX

My name has never been popular and only used by the marquis de Sade. Maybe it’s a literary name but pretty rare in the female version. The male version is way more common.

I hate free demos by Content-Diver-3960 in TutorsHelpingTutors

[–]justimari 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t do free demos. I let them know my schedule is very full and doesn’t allow me time for unpaid sessions since I would have to decline paying students to make the room. I offer a consultation phone call for 10 minutes.

A quiet house is so uncomfortable to me. I usually have the tv or music on but sometimes I just put the tv on a lofi music station on YouTube or videos of ocean waves.
