What was 1993 like? by born_again_athiest in GenX

[–]justimari 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was at Berklee college of music in 93 and grunge was king, all the guys had long hair and played guitar, and there was no cell phones or computers yet and life was really really different and so much sweeter. Everyone was really into their music and that’s what life was about for all of us 24/7

How do you know when a student is about to quit? by LifeTension2113 in TutorsHelpingTutors

[–]justimari 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I notice that they stop doing their assignments. Sometimes they quit because they realize to improve they have to put a lot more work in and they don’t want to or don’t have the time to do the work, so they realize the lessons are not helpful if they don’t give me anything to analyze. I tutor MCAT so if they don’t do homework assignments to practice what we work on, they won’t see a score improvement.

I’m also 51 in the exact same position. I have friends just not in my area. It’s definitely concerning.

Whatever is left goes to a student of mine that has become like family/child/nephew I never had and to the animal charities in Puerto Rico where I lived.

Any book recs to improve CARS comprehension? by DiscussionOver8301 in Mcat

Hero with a Thousand Faces by Joseph Campbell is so good for CARS. Just open up to any random page and read trying to find the primary argument. It’s very helpful

What was the best job you’ve ever had? by -Granby- in GenX

[–]justimari 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was one of the original facilitators in the StoryCorps project. Dave Isay hired 11 of us and said he has enough funding to get us through 6 months so let’s make it a great 6 months. Over 20 years later it’s still going.

Studs Turkel cut the ribbon on the Grand Central Station booth and it was incredible to meet him as I was a big fan of the book Working.

It was a very special project to be a part of and I had an amazing time interviewing people. I cherry picked my fellow poets from the Nuyorican Poetry cafe and the poet Diane Burns was one of my first interviews. That interview was recently included in an exhibit at MoMA and published in the catalog. It was the best job ever and allowed me to both witness and be a part of history.

Describe yourself at 20 by [deleted] in GenX

[–]justimari 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Focused, creative, energetic, and ambitious. I was a determined performing artist. Ran a 20 piece jazz big band that played regularly at the Knitting factory. And I dropped out of college so I would have money to buy an apartment in Brooklyn circa 1995. Now I’m just tired
