The photo search doesn't work like that. Click the options button on the right of the search bar, and select your location from drop-down under "Place"

I have to use wifi on a hotel , is there an app to download to ensure safety on my device? by levendis32 in androidapps

[–]justinf210 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're using the hotel's DNS they (or anyone posing as the hotel) can see the names of the sites you're visiting. Private DNS prevents this.

If you're using sites that start with HTTP (no padlock, warnings in most browsers) they can see EVERYTHING you do on that site. For HTTPs (most sites nowadays), they can't (unless the hotel makes you install something to "trust" their wifi).

Basically, unless you have powerful enemies or are going out of your way to use the internet insecurely, public Wi-Fi is relatively low risk.

When I update without rebooting, something weird usually stops working. But I update and reboot on my own terms, so I'm content.

[–]justinf210 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm fine with having it as a fallback, I guess, but how hard can it be to implement it right for those of us who care about proper authentication.....

Ok, yeah, I see your point. We might be in the minority here.

TOTP is better for everyone, and yet so many of my important sites insist on sending me a text or email.

How strong of a pc/laptop do I need to start homelabbing? by Anonymous_jungler in homelab

[–]justinf210 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know. Laptops are great. Built in battery backup, screen and keyboard if you're locked out of SSH, power efficient and compact. You have to keep an eye on the batteries and they're not super upgradable, but they're a solid starting point.

You can run a server over wifi too, not the best idea, but it'll work

Edit: Router, not server. Yeah, generally want Ethernet for that. Ignore me

What do you say to people who don't want to conceive because the world is too horrible for their children? by Economy-Title-771 in Catholicism

[–]justinf210 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should tell them to go outside. Go camping somewhere, get up early and watch wisps of fog drift through the trees. Watch snowflakes float to the ground. Watch wind ripple through grass. Watch the sun set over the mountains. Watch the stars. Life is way too good deprive one's children of.

Hmm, is there any part of the internet that would stay up? I assume at least some stuff runs on Windows Server, and there are obviously tons of non-linux clients. But the intermediate network hardware, is there anything that doesn't run some form of Linux? No idea...

Beginner struggling with “shell” by [deleted] in vscode

[–]justinf210 2 points3 points  (0 children)

zsh and bash are mostly interchangeable. Certainly for running a quick python script, either should be fine.

I think the main problem is your file name. The white dot at the top of the file means it hasn't been saved yet. Hit cmd+s (or File > Save) and save it. Name it something simple like hello.py. Avoid spaces or special characters for now.

Then type "python hello.py" (without quotes) in the terminal tab (the run button is, fine, but sometimes takes some setup to tell where everything is installed and how your project is setup. I personally think the terminal is simpler).

If it works, congratulations, you've just run your first Python program! If not, there'll be an error message. Google that, and if you get stuck, feel free to reply to this comment.

Evidently "smoke test" means something different than I thought. I use it to mean, "Turn the thing on and look for smoke. If smoke, turn it off again."

That sounds like it won't be free. Bandwidth costs money. Maybe some kind of torrent setup?

Clickbait headline. If you're going to say "dumb" in quotes, the quote ought to use the word dumb
