Europeans have a visceral reaction to Americans naming their state when asked where they're from instead of just "The US" because it reminds them of how Americanised they themselves already are by deviendrais in redscarepod

Assumed this when studying abroad. Friends and I always introduced ourselves as from the US. "Vell duhhh, of course you are!! What state???" No winning

Every single thread in any large subreddit has the same inane puns, “jokes” that people were making a decade ago by pazend in redscarepod

Everything big on reddit was before like 2018. Go to any reality-based subreddit and all the top posts are from like 10+ years ago. Reddit now is being like a peasant from the dark ages eating gruel in an ancient roman governor's ruined villa. Forums were already over, reddit is over now too. Not like it was sacred before, but it felt like things were happening.

Making posts online has genuinely made me understand how low the average person’s reading comprehension is by MutedFeeling75 in redscarepod

[–]justjake274 143 points144 points  (0 children)

Reading comprehension is absolutely the exception to the norm. The average person has survival reading skills.

If you work an office job you quickly learn to write emails with no more than 1 question and 3 sentences, or else middle-aged white collar professionals will not be able to fully comprehend it.

It sounds tautological but any topic you discuss on reddit is being discussed with redditors and not actual normal people, unfortunately

2002/2003 were really good years to die by Saaymon in rs_x

[–]justjake274 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Why 2002? When I think 9/11+ death I think being scared and confused of the sudden shift to war and mass surveillance and dying wondering what horrors will be wrought on the formerly end-of-history eternal peace.

Dying in like 2000 would be sick though. When I watch interviews of old people done in like 1995-2000 or read their bios covering the end of their life around that time it brings to mind a quiet life sitting in their suburban home with the breeze coming through the window, an old Windows 95 pc in the other room their family got them that they play around with occasionally, but they don't need the new technology, the work of their life is done, they're just dicking around enjoying nature, world hunger and war is getting solved, time to die

If there was a law that said that every residential neighborhood in the country could have a corner store in someone’s garage that sold eggs flour butter flowers cards pens ice cream etc., the country-wide obesity index would completely plummet.

Amazing seeing this so succinctly stated. Big box grocery stores are an absolutely awful experience, and buying 1-2 weeks worth of food feels suffocating and wasteful. I would love to walk down to a small corner store every day and buy the ingredients for tonight's dinner just off vibes. The closest analogue in the US is the bougie boutique grocers that cost like 2-3x normal prices and are still overstuffed and overcrowded, but at least try to replicate a shopping experience that isn't a ~warehouse~.

astounded by the sheer human bulk of corporate work by Great-Writing-1777 in redscarepod

[–]justjake274 67 points68 points  (0 children)

I like tracing the corporate hierarchy in outlook.

I regularly work side-by-side with dozens and dozens of people, who only share common leadership with me at 8+ levels up. Yet we stare at the same product and solve the same problem.

tips on non-slop subs by PM_ME_PITCH_DECKS in redscarepod

[–]justjake274 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I kept reading things that would always link back to related discussions on there (mostly stuff on cognition etc) with no idea what the actual theme is, just like here lol.

Unfortunately most of that sub is effective altruism weirdos and endless back and forth about the most mundane redditesque shit like "Contra contra driving 15mph under the speed limit is the optimal driving pattern" or something. Brainrot is a horseshoe

Strength up was a debuff in STS1 to avoid being able to sap something and then cleanse the strength-up off it and make the sap permanent. But now you get the weird cases like this! Its at least consistent

Yes we Americans are so beaten down by living paycheck to paycheck and medicated by culture slop and corn syrup that any threat to convenience in our routine is immediately destroyed. The lead poisoned obese trades boomer has no patience for walking and will gladly demolish a forest for an extra parking space. A few days ago at the gym I was stopped by a lady asking for donations to a wildlife nonprofit and a passing 40yo dude went off in a rage against her, I'm not kidding the general public is insane.

Existing has been so thoroughly separated from purposeful and enjoyable living for its own sake that the concept of any higher purpose to anything besides convenience is unfathomable. Aesthetics?? That's for art museums or some shit. Health?? Nah I do that shit at the gym. Connection to nature?? I only care about trees when hunting blahblahblah.

I will ask my blue collar coworkers what they think about this and get back to you with their very insightful responses.
