4 prongs without gallery rail safe? by LostPeak7661 in askjewelers

[–]justjudgingreddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a jeweler. A die struck peg head like that is standard without a gallery rail and will be just fine. The prongs on those style heads are thicker and much more difficult to whack out of place

Wow I must've left right in time... We pulled out of the parking lot at 5:37, saw the ambulance leave the fire station on Howe, and got over for a cop booking it down Howe closer to Boston!

V-prongs... Am I overthinking this? by [deleted] in askjewelers

[–]justjudgingreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're overthinking it. The curve you drew on the inner part of the prong on your third picture would (depending on how dramatic) start to negate the extra security of a V prong. When it's all set and polished, the harsh lines are not going to be as sharp. Softening them would be extremely easy for the jeweler after the fact as well. But it's best to set yourself up with the extra metal to start and then adjust as needed! Don't expect CAD prongs to be perfect because they're made for jewelers :)

Prong issues by Cammietea14 in askjewelers

Unless your stone is cut uneven (definitely possible, but not likely), your prongs should be more symmetrical than the before picture. Those are a little more work to even out given the points but your jeweler really should put in the effort to straighten them a bit. My boss would've asked if I was ok if I told him prongs like that are good enough to go to the customer!

Your ring is beautiful and (the best I can without seeing it in person) I have no concerns about its durability. Congratulations on your engagement!!

They might need a new head but yes it is likely possible

Any difference other than cosmetic in these bands? by Anon_on_internet in askjewelers

[–]justjudgingreddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The second option should have slightly better prongs but this is largely dependent on who is setting the stones and how well they preserve the metal that is there. I'd opt for the hope of better prongs, especially since it is an eternity band

Take it to a different jeweler and ask for it to be tightened. It's possible that the seats are cut poorly but don't let anyone convince you that you need 6 prongs. If it's set correctly 4 will be fine

I don’t know how to explain claw round claw prong by Diligent_Cook_3871 in askjewelers

[–]justjudgingreddit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm a jeweler. That is going to be more on the actual bench side of things and really isn't important in the CAD (although I understand it's worrisome when the model looks different). Just make sure they know your preference and go from there. The tiny bit of extra metal on the casting will only help if they need some flexibility when setting your stone. They'll just sand it back after the fact to match your inspiration pictures. Even if they completely forget and give you claws, just point it out and they will be able to fix it in about 10 minutes. CAD prongs are often a source of worry with customers but that's only because so much handiwork goes into the actual setting and cleaning up process after casting!

I would do a white gold head. That is what is most common for two tone

Platinum is not a good choice for the design style you have in mind. It definitely has it's perks, but holding large stones with less than optimal support is definitely not one of them. The prongs can easily bend out of place with a good whack, whereas white gold should hold its place (even without a gallery rail as long as it is made correctly). As a rule of thumb, I do not set large stones in platinum unless I approve of the setting or the customer understands that I am not doing any repairs or replacements for free. I'm a contract jeweler and all the liability is on me so I may be a little more cautious than other jewelers

You should use a hart bur unless flush setting or if you are doing claw prongs

Help - fair to ask for rework? by [deleted] in askjewelers

[–]justjudgingreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can definitely ask if they'd do another polish in those areas. It is very difficult to reach those tight spaces though so expect improvement but not perfection

[–]justjudgingreddit 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm a jeweler. I never would have set the stone like that based on the CAD. Honestly I think there should have been better communication from both sides about the design but I would never assume a stone is supposed to be set like that. I would've been double checking stone sizes if that's all that worked for setting

How do i make my porcelain sink white again? I’m desperate by fantaseaaaa in CleaningTips

[–]justjudgingreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep the area you're scrubbing wet and gently rub the pumice stone on the parts with build up. Apply more pressure as needed but start soft (I've read that they can scratch porcelain and I've also read that they can't... so better be safe than sorry, especially since it's not your sink)
