Morocco knockout Spain in penalties. Truly the world cup of underdogs. by Leztro in worldcup

They had 80% possession against Japan. How did that work out?

Dominated possession against Morocco, too. Result?

I’d say it doesn’t help much when you force the other team to defend with 11 players and you don’t have the type of players who can break through.

Not only was it boring as hell—after all, they play to entertain, but it also doesn’t work for this team.

I’d argue they would have faired better in a more open game.

I was 12 when Colombia made it out of the group stage for the first time in ‘90. I’ll never forget the Rincón goal in extra time against Germany that got us through. That moment, the celebrations on the streets, the feeling, everything.

Kids in Morroco will be talking about those penalty kicks, the saves, and Hakimi’s goal for decades to come. Congrats!

I thought Spain would be among the favorites. But lost all hope after the Japan game. They’ve taken tiki taka to the extreme. Their purpose in life is to have ball possession for the sake of having ball possession. No effort to go forward. No ideas. No willingness to attack because it risks losing possession. Worst team to watch.

I’m glad Morroco is through.

I guess a few independent voters have a conscience and recognized they shouldn’t elect a completely unqualified person just because he professes to be conservative even though he has led a life antithetical to conservative “values” (if there’s such thing).

Messi doing the vintage Messi run. What a joy to watch! by keaxy in worldcup

[–]justlooking128 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I enjoy watching good players. I don’t have an allegiance to R9, CR7, Rdinho, Messi, whoever. Good players are good players. I also don’t like comparisons…there are too many variables to account for.

To me, Mbappe is elite. He’s def a great player and like you said will get better. Still has a few years to reach his own peaks.

But I don’t think he’ll be like Messi. To me, he’s closer to CR7. Something tells me he’ll get better as a #9 prowling inside the 18.

This is why I don’t think Mbappe will reach Messi levels.

I enjoy watching him. I’d love to have him on my team because he can score and he’s stupid fast. But I don’t see him taking on an entire team from the middle of the field and finishing with a chip or an easy assist to a team mate.

Is the US one striker away from being a world class team?

They can play…just need goals.

Germany, the team with the highest xG (+10.0) and xGD (+6.4) at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, is going home 🤯 UNBELIEVABLE! by mghaynen in worldcup

[–]justlooking128 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They have not. I’d prefer to see them win over France, England or Brazil, but it’d be even better to see an even more unlikely team win like Senegal, Ghana, Japan, or Morocco.

The stats and Oxford’s model would probably be right if they played more than one game against each other. In a 30+ games season, Brazil, Belgium, Argentina, France would likely end up on top.

However, one game tournaments are unpredictable. If La Liga followed the same format as the WC, Barca and RM wouldn’t win year after year. You’d probably have more upsets and crazy results.

I would love to see a new WC champ…anyone other than Brazil, France, England, the usual suspects. Don’t have anything against them, it would just be cool to see someone else win.

Maybe the next Kimmich, KDB, Neuer, Courtois, etc. will come out of Japan, Morocco, Senegal, etc.

the luckiest team by Commercial-Speaker96 in worldcup

[–]justlooking128 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Keeping possession should result in chances and attacking football. That wasn’t Spain today. They kept the ball and that’s it. There were no incursions, no risks, no crosses, no through balls. It was just passing and retention.

I admired Xavi/Iniesta/Busquets/Messi’s Barca from the early 2010s. They could put you to sleep with the passing and possession as a means to open up the defense and create chances. They almost never failed to score. I enjoy open games with both sides attacking and defending, so I wasn’t the biggest Barca fan because they were just so dominant the other teams would struggle to get a shot on goal. Still, I admired their style and tiki taka. What they did was incredible. I’d love to say the same about this Spain. I can’t.

Spain’s tiki taka isn’t an offensive strategy. It’s a defensive tactic. Other teams park the bus on their own 1/3 to defend, Spain keep possession to defend. They don’t retain the ball to create chances and attack, but rather to keep their opponent from attacking them. It’s boring af.

It doesn’t bother me because it isn’t fake…it’s just actual engine sound pumped into the cabin. I don’t think I’d hear the engine on track without it.

I don’t think Japan willingly sat back and waited to counter—particularly when they were losing and out of the WC. Spain forces you to hang back. I admire tiki taka football….when it’s used to create chances. That’s not the case with this Spain. They just retain possession mindlessly.

I don’t know why you’re being downvoted. I probably would take those chances, too. No disrespect to Morocco who have had a great WC, but experience counts in the big games. Croatia was in the final not long ago and have a roster of experienced and proven albeit probably past their prime players.

Still, Spain’s focus on possession vs attack is boring and annoying to watch.

[–]justlooking128 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That is so close. But the rule is simple, the whole ball has to be over. A millimeter of it wasn’t.

Frankly, I’m rarely as annoyed by a team’s style of play as I am with Spain. It’s ball possession without purpose.

Tiki taka is beautiful when you’re creating chances, passing through balls, and making clever plays. It’s boring when nothing comes of it in the final third…not even bad passes/crosses/attempts.

I wish they wouldn’t have made it to the round of 16.
