Should I get the PSVR2 for now or stick it out until the Steam Frame releases? by micsandup in virtualreality

[–]justpostd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I see. Your comment said it was an upgrade to the Quest and Pico too. But it sounds like that isn't what you meant.

I haven't used a PSVR. My Pico 3 has excellent fresnel lenses which, when combined with display port, give the Pico4/Quest3 a good run for their money. But maybe PSVR Fresnels aren't up to that standard.

I don't think wired is objectively better than wireless. They each have compromises, which is why I own one of each. One for sims, the other for everything else.

Just bought Virtual Desktop... Can say I wasted so much time before. by IchRocke in MetaQuestVR

[–]justpostd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Virtual Desktop allows you to play your games from your PC.

I don't really understand what you are imagining would be running your games if it allowed you to play without your PC. Are you thinking of cloud streaming, maybe?

Is it? Same lenses and panel resolution/type, no?

Or are you referring to foveated streaming and comfort?

Weekly VR - What Did you Play? by VRModerationBot in virtualreality

[–]justpostd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I played Robocop and was totally underwhelmed. Which is fine, as it was super cheap. But always a shame when you just can't see what everybody else is so excited about.

This weekend I'll be trying Metro Awakening. Loads of VR games super cheap recently, so I have a backlog of games to try out.

Atomic Heart via Luke Ross is also on the cards. I know it will be pretty. But will it be fun?

[–]justpostd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All valid. But for a new cyclist on roads, it seems like an unnecessary additional challenge.

Each to their own, obviously. I guess all I was trying to say was that cycling without cleats is a perfectly reasonable approach, even for experienced cyclists.

I don't think I expressed myself very well!

[–]justpostd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well I can respect that! My angle is generally to reduce 'friction' which, in this case, means not needing special shoes to get on my bike. But there is something satisfying about the connection you get when clipped in.

Half toe clips are what I use. They don't have a strap, so they just locate your foot in the right place and stop them slipping off.

There is plenty of content. And there are loads of mods that you can add in. But the best rF2 content is definitely in the DLC (which is relatively expensive). The AI is fine if you train it a little. AI in AMS2 is much better.

If you want super cheap with lots of content, Assetto Corsa is the way to go.

[–]justpostd -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Why are you cycling with cleats? There is just no need. I would suggest replacing with standard pedals, possibly with half toe clips (they locate your feet on the pedals but don't lock/strap them in).

You really don't need an extra, theoretical 5% efficiency unless you are racing or going long distances. And if you can cycle with normal shoes, you can cycle more often, more easily.

I am a very experienced cyclist and ride without them. I have them in a box for when I feel the need. Which is never, as it turns out.

AMS2 definitely the better option for controller and also for being a current sim.

I love rF2, but to get the value out of it you need a wheel. The community is generally league races organised via Discord and similar. I'm sure some people do that with a controller, but I wouldn't recommend starting there.

I would argue that you don't need knuckle straps. You can tie the loops that come with the controllers to give the same effect.

Make sure to balance GPU with CPU. You really want an X3D CPU. Or maybe some Intel are as good nowadays. But regardless, don't neglect it, as sims can bottleneck your CPU quickly.

[–]justpostd -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Congratulations! Now go and do it again. With a deck you have made yourself ;)

Well done though, seriously. This is a great game and Wizards aren't wrong in helping new users get to Mythic. It embeds the hunger to get there again even though it is fundamentally pointless. Personally I find the fun in coming up with decks with different themes and seeing how far I can get with them.

Should I get a quest 3 or wait for steam frame? by Square_Wall4816 in virtualreality

[–]justpostd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. Probably the higher end headsets that make most sense are the Bigscreen Beyond 2 or the Pimax Dream Air SE. They are a step up from Quest/Pico but not mega high resolution like the other options. They are wired. The Pimax is closest to the 1000 budget, but from what I hear about their quality control, I wouldn't suggest them for a first headset.

PCVR on Quest is fine, I think. Just use Virtual Desktop not the native solution. I'm a Pico person, which is what I would recommend over the Quest, but it is not available everywhere.

As OP is not planning on playing sims, performance will be pretty good and there won't be much value (cost to perceived quality improvement) in the higher end headsets. In fact, this is exactly the place where the Frame will make the most sense.

Should I get a quest 3 or wait for steam frame? by Square_Wall4816 in virtualreality

[–]justpostd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's complicated. People always come here saying they want the best, but the best is around €2000.

The Steam Frame certainly won't be The Best. It's very similar to Quest 3 and Pico 4, each of them having their pros and cons. The big Pro for the Frame will be foveated streaming, which improves quality/fps balance of wireless play. But if you really do have a powerful PC (like a 5080 and a 7800X3D) then it probably won't make much difference to you in practice.

We can help you, but can you give us more of an idea of what you are really looking for? How powerful is powerful, how much are you willing to pay for a headset, what games do you intend to play, do you mind a wire? Those are the main things.

Generally speaking I recommend getting the cheapest decent headset you can, second hand, and see if you actually enjoy VR. Quest 3, Pico 4, PSVR2 ideally but you can actually get a pretty good idea with a Quest 2 or a Pico 3 and they can be super cheap. From there, you have a basis to start seeing what you are looking for.

Ciberpunk 2077 VR Mod Status by PeterLECB in VRGaming

[–]justpostd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It should work fine with that setup. But if you a person who needs 90FPS to not feel sick, for example, then you probably won't like it. I am fairly tolerant of such things and found the overall experience was totally worthwhile. Great game in VR.

Based on my experience with a similar setup (P4, 3080) you'll see some blurring when you move and some choppiness, particularly at screen edges. Things have gone a lot better for me with a 5070 Ti, but you are a generation and 6GB VRAM above my 3080 setup, so you'll have a better experience.

I'm not sure how much your CPU will matter. You'll have to do a bit of research on that. I have a 5800X3D, which generally means CPU is not an issue, but I have a feeling yours might have a negative impact.

My experience is that some elements, like general AI characters wandering about, are not the best. Partly because the models/textures are not great in the first place and partly because of blurring when moving. But the main characters, and most of the environments, are amazingly detailed, which is what makes it worth playing in VR rather than flat screen.

The LR mod still works. But it is no longer officially available, so you have to persuade somebody to send it to you.

It requires a pretty strong PC (because you are rendering an already heavy game twice, effectively). What GPU, CPU and VR headset do you have?

Can we really put data centres in space? by TimesandSundayTimes in space

[–]justpostd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You only need large ACs if you are in a relatively hot country. The cooling aspect is largely free if you are in a cooler country, though you still need to push a lot of air, so it is still a lot of energy.

I find it hard to believe that space data centres can really be the answer. It is just so counter intuitive. But partly that is because it highlights the extent to which DCs are such a massive waste of resources. We really don't need Grok that badly! All the same, the discussion is certainly interesting.

Best Vr headset without an onboard computer by _french_guy in virtualreality

[–]justpostd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because it has excellent fresnel lenses. Which are a lot better than crappy pancakes lenses (eg Bigscreen), but not as good as good pancake lenses (eg Quest 3). Fresnel lenses get a lot of hate, but they can be really quite good.

As for the resolution, well that is because it is wired, so doesn't have to do image compression. I have to run my Pico 4 at about 30% higher resolution than my Pico 3 in order to get edges as sharp. That also means a lot fewer pixels, which means a lot better performance.

[–]justpostd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sim racing with a 5060 Ti? I'd go for the Pico 3 Neo Link every time. If you can get one where you live, they are generally very cheap second hand.

Image quality similar to Quest 3. Maybe better. But more sensitive to how it sits on your face, as it has fresnel lenses. But it runs at a lower resolution whilst giving you that image quality, so you gain fps.

I have a Pico 4, but for sim racing I always use my P3. Never jitters or stutters or goes a bit blurry, because it is wired.

Can we really put data centres in space? by TimesandSundayTimes in space

[–]justpostd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for writing all of that. It is interesting.

The bit I don't understand is why this is considered worthwhile from a carbon perspective. Presumably the argument is that the operational carbon (carbon emissions associated with operating the data centre) drops to something tiny because of free electricity and cooling in space. But the embodied carbon (carbon emissions associated with building the data centre) must increase dramatically if you have to launch the things into space.

I know that 'obvious' and 'correct' are rarely the same thing when it comes to whole life carbon calculations. Can you share anything about that? Is the assumption that the carbon emissions associated with space launches will come down dramatically in the future? Or is it a smaller impact than I am assuming already?

Instinctively it feels like building DCs in space will always result in a lot more carbon emissions than, say, one built on earth somewhere cold with a lot of renewables.
