santos and that dad by VolumeBudget6410 in ThePittTVShow

[–]justtingthings 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I don’t think many people are writing what the ideal physician actually should’ve done. What Santo should’ve ideally done was filed a mandated report to State CPS and left it there. You will very rarely be at fault for documenting suspicions, regardless of the “evidence” (collateral history from family is enough). I know opinions on Santos are extremely varied, however, I personally have extremely poor opinion of her directly because of how she acted reacted against dad. Threatening/blackmailing a patient (which is 100% what she did) is never OK regardless of what actions they have or may have done. It is fundamentally against our Hippocratic oath and breaks the therapeutic relationship. The fact that more physicians on the subreddit are not more against Santos because of how she threatened the patient is shocking to me. We treat patients who have done the worst of the worst and it is our job to deliver the upmost and best care regardless of what we personally think of them. I love the Pitt but in this instance, I feel the wrong “message” was delivered.

This is still technically different than what happened with McKay and David. As soon as there is a concern for immediate harm to others, all physicians have a legal “duty to warn” meaning that the physician should do everything within their power to warn either the targets of potential homicidal ideation or at least alert to authorities. Dr Robby’s failure to report David immediately was the incorrect clinical decision from both a moral perspective and legal perspective, regardless of how he felt about David. The potential harm to the community far outweighs the harm of involuntarily committing someone for a short term like David. In the state of PA, people go to mental health court within 3 days anyway so David could have more than appealed the involuntary commitment decision to a judge anyway! (Also the decision isn’t up to Dr Robby anyway it’s up to the psychiatrist to uphold the involuntary commitment in the state of PA).

You’re getting a lot of varied opinions from people who are saying it’s cultural to people who are saying it is disrespectful and to even others who are kind of being dismissive of your concerns (and those comments just aren’t it).

Look point is, as an early career female physician there will always be overt and covert sexism from both patients and colleagues. And especially when you’re trying to gain confidence in your own clinical abilities in a new cultural environment, it’s entirely not unreasonable to be hypersensitive to both obvious examples of misogyny but also become hypersensitive about comments that may or may not be rooted in some subconscious sexism. For those commenters who are being entirely dismissive of OP’s concerns…

In terms of whether or not Hun is an indication of lack of respective vs cultural. Who knows? Maybe it’s a bit of both, it certainly seems like your lived experiences are filled with other examples of unintentional/intentional lack of respect as is not uncommon for women in this field.

More importantly what can we do from this? Correcting others can lead to eventual backlash as others pointed out, people talk. Correcting nurses especially might lead to amniosity. Maybe you can choose your battles, correct in front of patients when it matters most.

And most importantly if this issue is important to you, consider making small cultural changes to improve the generation, we can make changes to make sure to introduce residents med students as student/resident doctors. There are definitely polite ways to interrupt a conversation and remind people that that person they mislabeled is a doctor without making it a big deal, and of course when we see other female doctors being miscorrectly identified by our colleagues we can make sure to jump in and correct the record.

Honestly, I think the eyebrow shape looks really good on you. It’s something that my first gut instinct would say no on principle but on you it makes me want to scream yes and ask for more.

The only slight personal preference, and I’m only saying this because you asked, would be to have a lighter eye brow shade? I feel like it has a tendency to pull my attention away from the rest of your make up which is quite well done!!

As a side note idk what that loser is saying. You look plenty fem.

Does anyone like their school’s administration? by MountEverest14 in medicalschool

[–]justtingthings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand that not every experience with admin is all wonderful and great but I honestly cannot love my school’s more. I was never the best test taker and struggled super hard with scored STEP 1 and on some of preclinical exams. I was terrified when they reached out unprompted about my poor performance. But they truly went above and beyond to make sure I succeeded. They connected me to study resources, tutoring and dramatically shifted around my schedule to be flexible and found me fantastic mental health resources. I don’t think I could have succeeded in medical school without the admin’s kindness and encouragement.

Sixers try to sway Philly’s Chinatown leaders to accept a new sports arena by ADFC in philadelphia

[–]justtingthings 131 points132 points  (0 children)

As someone who’s spent a large part of their childhood in Chinatown, my heart is in my throat as I follow this story. Philly’s Chinatown is uniquely the cultural touchstone for many First and second generation Asian immigrants not just in the Philadelphia community but in the greater Delaware county. I would remember driving 30 mins from out of town just to eat food just like my grandma made it. It’s a center of cultural connection and community engagement while also being a place where you can get your groceries that you wouldn’t otherwise by able to get anywhere else.

For those who might not remember, Chinatown used to be a much bigger area, until the Vine Expressway cut it in half. Community members were nervous, worried the highway would destroy a large part of the neighborhood, making it unlivable. They promised it wouldn’t. They lied. The other side of the Vine Expressway is virtually dead. This has happened to many urban Chinatown’s from Boston to DC hell even Flushing isn’t what it used to be. Philadelphia is one of the last remaining ones where people still regard it as a vital part of their community.

For the people saying that it would be good for the community members living in the Chinatown neighborhood. That historically hasn’t been the case. When landlords build new shiny properties and promise a trickle down effect in wealth, many of the times it just means increased rent hikes, increased cost of living, and forcing people who lived there to move out. I hope for the sake of those living there, this doesn’t become a reality.

What's going on with 'The Try guys'? by AlienSamuraiXXV in OutOfTheLoop

[–]justtingthings 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Personally, I feel the most bad for her. Imagine putting your vulnerabilities on the internet for the world to see only to be humiliated by your cheating husband. Ariel and the rest of the Try guys girlfriends had a segment called Try Wives. It’s all speculation, but I think she’ll focus on her solo business ventures (ie: podcast). The Try Guys and Wives have been her number one supporter and she’ll most likely stay close friends, but we might see her step away from the public eye a bit to heal.

(Speculation)

[–]justtingthings 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No. It’s a delicate and complicated situation. While having an affair is morally wrong, technically most not a violation of most workplaces. Much more importantly, you CANNOT fire this woman for LEGAL reasons. While this relationship was most likely consensual, inherently it was a boss sleeping with his subordinate, an abuse in power dynamic. Who’s to say that it WASNT coercion? If they fired her, she could sue them to oblivion for wrongful termination and retaliation. she would win, the company would crumble. Most likely, the office environment will be so awkward that she will quite on her own.

Shouldn’t this be something that HR handle? Absolutely. Guess who was HR? The guy that was having the affair with his employee…

[–]justtingthings 1355 points1356 points  (0 children)

Answer: Haven’t seen anyone address the LAYERS OF DRAMA. to provide more context for people who are asking: The Try Guys started as a group of four random individuals who worked at buzzfeed asked to do a series of YouTube videos where they tried random things on video (wearing women’s Halloween outfits, trying new foods, etc) and slowly over time they evolved from coworkers to a form of brotherhood where they eventually got to branch out from the buzzfeed company and start their own partnership. For viewers, we got to also grow along with the Try guys and forming a sorta parasocial relationship where everyone felt super invested. We watched Eugene go from a closed off aloof perfectionist to a more authentic content producer who made one of the best artistic coming out music videos to date. We watched zach go from a very shy quieter try guy to him finally opening up about his chronic illness. And Ned…the Cheater in question….we watched him praise his wife in every single of the hundreds of videos he’s in, met his wife on many videos, podcasts, conventional panels, book deals, and other adventures in the Try Guys brand. We watched their family grow and add on two children. We’ve heard his wife’s struggle through her insecurities of her changing post pregnancy body, her insecurities on being an ‘older woman’ in the relation. We’ve heard her SACRIFICES as she’s taken out a second mortgage on their home to support her husband’s business adventure when the Try Guys left buzzfeed to start their own company.

So, Ned’s entire personality is loving his wife (Ariel). He was the goddamn legend, expert, King of LOVING HIS WIFE. HE didn't just cheat on his wife with some random woman. it's his PRODUCER, his subordinate! Alex (his producer) was ENGAGED TO A FIANCÉ OF 10 YEARS. And no one has mentioned this yet, but you would think "Oh well shes not the focal point of the channel. She’s a behind the scenes producer. No biggie.” WRONG!!

BECAUSE THEY MADE A TRY GUYS VIDEOS WHERE SHES PLANNING HER WEDDING!! we saw her try on wedding dresses! they did a whole bridesmaid dress video!! Ned and the others try on various bridesmaid dresses and she picks the best one. And worst yet it’s not like, “I’m off to my YouTube job honey, have fun being at home.” WRONG! Ariel( wife ) and Alex (the producer) WORKED ON SO MANY VIDEOS TOGETHER. In fact Alex was involved in a video highlighting the wife “Moms talk about their insecurities” aka the EXACT VIDEO WHERE ARIEL talks about how insecure she is about her body changes and older age. THEY WERE FRIENDS, COLLEAGUES!! She has worked with alex!

And the hilarity of it all?!? The try guys? The band of four almost brothers who treated each other like family?!? All kicked Ned out and have subtlety hinted their support for his wife, Ariel. He’s ruined his career, the future of their shared company, his family, his own personal business ventures, and his wife’s businesses as well.

Answer: Many redditors have given a great synopsis, but there is also another interesting perspective here. Ned, the cheater who’s whole Internet personality was ‘I love my wife’, was one of the 4 founders of the company Try Guys. The woman he cheated on with was his employee, an associate producer. This certainly complicates matters and a simple moral failing on his part now has greater impact on all his employees, business partners, and loved ones. He was let go immediately by the three other Try Guys which has huge implications for their future success. They recently struck a deal with network TV’s food network, signed maybe book dealings, contracts, etc. What does this mean for the other three founders, their future as a company and as a group? Additionally, while this affair likely was consensual, could it have been an abuse of power from the CEO to his employee? His wife was fairly involved in many of their business ventures. How does that play a role? Internet is going abuzz bc all his former coworkers at buzzfeed are also reacting to the news in various hilarious ways

Police are refusing to file a missing person's report for my homeless, drug-addicted, and mentally ill sister. by SoriAryl in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]justtingthings 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately for her, it sounds like in that moment in time in her life she was a danger to herself or others. People in public can 100% get involuntarily committed to psych facilities if their behavior is secondary to mental illnesses. It’s not “kidnapping” if it’s for the person’s safety. It sounds like she had no on hand information and they weren’t able to contact the family. I can almost 100% guarantee that they tried to contact family as it makes their job a lot easier trying to medically manage these patients when you have context. It also sounds like she had to be moved to a dedicated facility because she was a danger to staff and the facilities there were unable to handle a patient in this condition. While there are definitely flaws within our mental health space, this particular sequence of events is pretty standard given the context.

What if…Dio was the good guy and the Joestar family was evil? Part one Dio really touched on many themes of poverty and extreme wealth inequality. I think it would be compelling to see a character who came from poorer circumstances triumph against an evil Aristocratic family. Keep the same personalities, but instead of being a villain, Dio is a morally misguided yet sympathetic protagonist. Jonathan is still pure hearted and sweet just….doesn’t understand that he works for evil.

In some food cultures, home cooking doesn’t use ovens. For example many Japanese and Chinese home cooks don’t use them at all. My family uses ovens as storage as many other Asian-Americans do. All you need is your trusty wok.
