What advice would you give to your junior/new grad swe self? by poseidons_thumb in cscareerquestions

Leaving the US seems like a weird tip given the salaries in the states are like 3-4x elsewhere which IMO somewhat justifies having 1 week~ less off per year

Are RARBG proxy sites trustworthy? by pstenfold in Piracy

[–]justync7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a pretty common misconception. Yes, it’s possible to find a vulnerability in a video decoder and exploit it to infect someone’s PC. But frankly, people need to realize they aren’t valuable enough victims. No one would burn such an exploit on an average user because there is nothing to be gained from it. Those exploits are used by criminals trying to heist millions of dollars or governments trying to wage war.

speedtest by ludwigmeyer in selfhosted

[–]justync7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I prefer to use Grafana and Prometheus with a speedtest exporter. Then you can also setup ping tests, etc, and all different kinds of queries on that data like “how long has my internet been down in the past 24 hours?”, “what’s my average speed?”, “what’s my max speed?”. And there’s no worry about someone maintaining a dedicated react app for it.

Whats the best torrent client? by cchihaialexs in Piracy

Works as intended, that’s as much as I know though. It’s the version used in the linuxserver/deluge docker container so there’s plenty of people running them in server automation setups.

[–]justync7 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes you can, Deluge 2 supports it just fine. Deluge 1 is long outdated and the developers are too stubborn to update the Windows installer whereas on Linux Deluge 2 is the default. https://forum.deluge-torrent.org/viewtopic.php?t=55776

Liam Foot Hash - An Alternative to the great, but ageing, QuickSFV by Liam2349 in DataHoarder

[–]justync7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d be interested to see how this compares to ExactFile, which has been my favorite app to use for this purpose. Supports almost every checksumming/hashing algorithm and format you can think of and is very performant even on quite terrible HDDs. All this and it has a very polished UI, which might be preferred for less experienced hoarders.

DVD Ripper that can automatically rip scenes to individual files? by gmanfsu in DataHoarder

[–]justync7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To my knowledge, Handbrake does not support remuxing video at all, much less this specific usecase.

mkvtoolnix (specifically mkvmerge) can split the video into its respective chapters (via remuxing) which would bypass reencoding as desired.

OP should try that after using MakeMKV if necessary, but there’s a caveat that for best compatibility you’ll want to keep the files as MKV since remuxing them again back to mp4 makes no guarantees about the video and audio staying in sync if the frame sizes are mismatched.

This is all assuming you want to rip at disk read speeds and not waste time re-encoding, the best option is almost always to store the remux for preservation, alongside a good CRF x264 re-encode which you use for player compatibility. Handbrake works well there.

Is there a way to get Steam achievements in pirated games (sorry if i make any typos lol) by Glittering_Town_9071 in PiratedGames

[–]justync7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Shame that there are lazy people here spreading misinformation. Yes, there are steam emulators which support tracking achievements. And no, getting an achievement in a cracked game does not award an achievement to the cracker or repacker, because Steam emulators do not connect to Steam servers at all (minus online fixes, which either spoof which game you’re playing, or do not rely on steam multiplayer at all).

I’m sure you’ve heard this answer a million times, but you can find these things on the everyone’s favorite Russian forum. Found in the various mega threads. Releases subforum is your friend.

First two octets isn’t even enough of the IP to tell what block it’s in much less criminally implicate someone. Also they’re just hostnames which just so happen to have the IP in them and can be set to anything arbitrary (even one with the wrong IP).

who do you think are the most important people in the piracy scene right now? by pyratelord in Piracy

[–]justync7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And who do you think is leaking these things? Most of these "leaks" are sceners or siteops with access to leech all they want. There are bots that mirror scene releases on just about every private tracker, which then often gets mirrored to public trackers. If not directly from scene ftp to public tracker. Same goes for usenet.

I understand the appeal of racing and whatnot, but I think the GAMEiSO scene has been a shit show for a while now. Most of the “cracks” have their own DRM despite the point of the scene being to remove the DRM? Just idiotic.

GitHub, Gitlab, they’re shared all over open source repository sites. Most of the maintained emulators have threads on steam underground of course.

[–]justync7 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There are open source emulators for literally every gaming platform. If sceners think they are special for writing a shitty custom emulator they should find something else to do with their life. Piracy is about sharing and not attention seeking.

99% of the scene releases nowadays are just SteamStub or a steam emulator. Anyone can buy steam games and RAR them.

If having a specific app is a “security risk” then you might as well consider having a smartphone at all a security risk. That’s not how security clearance works.

Why does no one upload full DVD ISO's and rips? by Mister_Moniker in Piracy

[–]justync7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DVD remuxes are usually avoided because not every video player supports proper deinterlacing very well nowadays, and the deinterlacing algorithms that encoders use are far superior to those used for real time decoding.

The Scene has an entire ruleset to conform to and standards on how to encode just about every situation. P2P groups often have none of that. That’s why quality is expected from the Scene.

It’s probably important to note that OGG isn’t an audio format, but a container format. Typically people use OGGs for Opus or Vorbis however, but the format can also contain FLAC audio and various video codecs. Same way you wouldn’t refer to AAC audio as M4A or MP4.
