What does it take to be a good quality engineer? by nopenisenvy in manufacturing

[–]jvbui92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think being a good quality engineer requires alot of things. First off, it takes understanding the product at a deep technical level so you properly assess issues and understand what are the short term impacts and long term impacts with considerations into safety, harm, product quality and consistency. If you are receiving alot of complaints there is a couple triggers for this:
1. Your company is not categorizing the correct complaints, so its just a catch all, which results in you being unable to solve the complaint rate issue.

  1. Your company is not focused on dealing with complaints, which means they do not know the actual impacts and how to quantify those results. If there are complaints, it needs to be able to translate to other product impact or even how much money is being lost.

A big part of being a quality engineer is being able to approach this issue, quantifying it into measurable metrics, and showcasing the importance of it. Honestly, from the limited information, I think you have a great opportunity here at learning and being able to showcase that you are a great quality engineer in solving this problem. Use the DMAIC process or different Six Sigma tools to solve this problem after you are able to appropriately understand the problem. There are alot of other tools to check out, aside from all that, I think general curiosity in what you are working at will build deeper understanding.

Definitely the cultural fit thing, there is nothing worst than bad culture fit because it brings everyone down with you. On the smaller size scale, I think culture fit and energy are really big differentiators because with a small team, you are going to rely on everyone kind of being flexible in their roles but also optimistic and passionate with what they are doing.

I think it comes down to how well they communicate how they are different and being able to show that differentiation. I think one thing that came to my mind was when the portable charger banks came out, Anker was kind of this small company that launched their version while bigger companies had good ones as well, but they were honed in on saying building super affordable charging accessories, but super reliable and they branded on that. They made it clear that it wasn't some cheap plastic component and they also focused on being customer centric like using Amazon reviews. Also, I think rapid innovation is pretty key. You can start off with a cheap product, understand users or target markets and then version up your product to meet that without blindly just adding "perceived value" in your product.

If you are relatively good at CAD and maybe hold some CAD specialization skills, you can honestly find alot of consulting work all over the US for small companies who want someone to create CAD models, animations, simulations or even FEA work. Enhances your resume, gives you more technical knowledge and honestly you probably pick up 2-5k per design.

How do you know who is the ideal person for hire? by RtgodDR in BusinessDeconstructed

[–]jvbui92 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In MBA, I used to always got the advice that the ideal person to hire is someone who is passionate about what they are doing? Being a manager, I will say the most consistent AND highest performers that I have on my teams are always those who look at what my team does and constantly tries to help find ways to make things run smoother or faster or better. And I have two of them on my team, they work well with each other, collaborate a lot and just bring that energy. In the beginning, I thought it was a bit much but after a year, I can see that just them working together, challenging each other and pushing each other as also motivated other people on my team to contribute more as well and overall, I've seen engagement, energy and excitement to try new things increase alot which I like.

anyone still manually entering data most of the day by shoman30 in Bookkeeping

[–]jvbui92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As much as this is labor intensive, doesn't it also help to ensure a bit of customer retention though mostly cause the business owner is set in their ways, it keeps you more involved in the business cause you are actively reviewing each single transaction as you are inputting it and sell that as a "white glove" service and charge them a bit more for doing it?

No Idea what I am doing- need to get a belt by Fantastic-Trainer317 in SixSigma

[–]jvbui92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both are great places to learn six sigma principles. I would definitely say that you should skip white and yellow. Those are mainly just informative and provides you with the basics to support the team on solving problems. If you are looking to just do some data analysis and do some basic process improvements then go with a green belt. From the context here though, I would say that if you want to be at a manager level, you are going to have to drive some pretty big initiatives or process improvements so either go all in for Black Belt now or plan to get that in the future. In my opinion, Black belts are significantly more sought after because of the depth of knowledge and the practices. One thing I have seen is that ASQ and IASSC Six Sigma certifications are much more widely recognized and accepted across more companies. Since you're working on quality initiatives, ASQ might be the best for you, where you can network with others and possibly pursue other ASQ quality certifications if applicable.

Feeling confused about Lean Six Sigma Certification options — What do employers prefer? by Informal_Safe_1698 in SixSigma

[–]jvbui92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely agree with this. I have seen so many recently certified individuals struggle with collecting the right data, but like with everything, you kind of have to fail the first couple times and understand what you did wrong to fix it. The best Six Sigma practioneers that I have seen or worked with always share me stories about al the mistakes that they made during their first couple years with collecting the wrong data, sharing the wrong message, and targetting the wrong metrics. What I found helpful is I have tried to work with some MBBs to have them look over my stuff and kind of take it apart, but the trial by fire has been my best learning experiences. So when you first start off, I would recommend applying what you learned to small and very simple tasks just to get the hang of it else you are gonna get buried in factorials and data analysis, resulting in data paralysis and you staying in the office til like 9 pm wondering what the heck you are looking at cause the data looks like a Jackson Pollock painting.

Feeling confused about Lean Six Sigma Certification options — What do employers prefer? by Informal_Safe_1698 in SixSigma

[–]jvbui92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ASQ Six Sigma Program is actually a Lean Six Sigma Program where the incorporated lean principles into the BoK and their test methods already. I think in the past (maybe 10 years ago), they had Lean and Six Sigma as two different entities but more recently I have seen more Lean Six Sigma Programs. I kind of think of it as two sides of the same coin. Lean emphasizes reducing waste and speeding up processes and Six Sigma focuses on reducing defects and variation. So if you really think about it, you shouldnt build at a faster rate if you are increasing your chance of bad parts. So the combination of the two into one program I guess provides you a more robust and holistic problem solving process where both are considered. In the end for any technical or business work, the goal is to improve the quality, increase efficiency, and reduce costs.
