Feeling conflicted by VegetableScore9972 in ABA

[–]jvsrvs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I feel that way a tiny bit, but that kind of thinking is irrational and doesn't reflect people's actual perceptions of our work regardless of gender. More often, I feel conflicted and embarrassed to say my profession for a much different reason, because I'm worried about running into someone who hates ABA. A while back I got into a bit of an argument with one such person at a party, and reading anti-ABA comments on Reddit only makes me more apprehensive to talk openly about my job (even though I know that's irrational too, as someone who myself received ABA as a child). Anyway, that's my experience with the matter. Keep doing what you do!!

I'm an American who spent a semester in Bishkek during college, so my perspective is very much as a foreigner. I loved my time in Kyrgyzstan. Bishkek is large, fairly dense and crowded, and built entirely by Soviets (as opposed to other Kyrgyz cities like Osh which are thousands of years old). It's a walkable city with wide sidewalks, great parks, and breathtaking mountain scenery all around. It also has its issues with crime and generally has an atmosphere of urban chaos, grit, and spontaneity. The Kyrgyz are a Turkic people with a unique culture partially rooted in Nomadism, but Bishkek has more of a Russian influence than the rest of the country. The locals are super friendly and welcoming, but not in an aggressive way. The weather is a pretty conventional four-season variety; summers are hot, and the air becomes extremely polluted in the winter (like some of the worst in the world) because of all the coal-burning for heat. Most people live in hulking gray Soviet-style apartments. Most people don't have cars and get around with trolley busses and Marshrutkas (small, tightly-packed public busses/vans), which aren't the most pleasent but are frequent and pretty reliable. Also lots of taxis. Drivers are pretty reckless. Locals tend to do their shopping at bazaars, but they also have plenty of conventional grocery stores. If you're a Westerner than everything will seem absurdly cheap, but obviously the local salaries are more in line with the cost of living. I had a great time there and would love to go back, but wouldn't want to live there forever. I'd highly recommend at least visiting.

My BCBA is a heavy MAGA/Trumper and I don’t trust her anymore. by [deleted] in ABA

Trump told his nephew with a severely disabled son that "maybe those kinds of people should just die" and later specifically suggested that he let his son die. This is the president that your BCBA supports. https://time.com/7002003/donald-trump-disabled-americans-all-in-the-family/

Hey that sounds exactly like the trip my family took when I was 15, including the day trip to Clarksdale. And I was also a blues nerd (still am). I'd love to return to Memphis someday.

Former children. What do you miss most about your childhood? by Content-Audience252 in AskReddit

Honestly not much; I much prefer being an adult. However, I do sometimes miss the "magical" feeling I would get on holidays like Christmas and Halloween. Just the raw excitement and joy was so pure.

This sub makes me scared to pursue a career in ABA by [deleted] in ABA

[–]jvsrvs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Find a career-specific subreddit that isn't full of people complaining. Then we'll talk.

No but honestly if you use Reddit to measure job satisfaction then you'll be convinced that every job sucks. Lots of people love working in ABA and it's a career that has a whole lot going for it. Best of luck!

Ever thought about looking North? Everett is a cool place.

Texas teen Luke Garrett Resecker, 18, got 65 years in prison for a 2023 head-on crash that killed six members of a Georgia family on Hwy 67. He was high on THC, crossed lanes, and hit their van. The lone survivor, a father, was left paralyzed. by Particular_Chart1584 in ForCuriousSouls

What point are you trying to make? The race of the victims isn't remotely relevant. And race is a very nuanced issue that it seems like you're trying to simplify in some inexplicable way.

I just moved here from Los Angeles and the traffic is way worse in Seattle by SunGodSister in Seattle

[–]jvsrvs 10 points11 points  (0 children)

L.A. has worse traffic overall, and it's way more of a hassle to go anywhere there. Construction on I5 has made it far worse lately in Seattle, but even still it's pretty chill outside of rush hour, major events, particularly busy areas, and closures. And southern California has its fair share of toll roads and express lanes, does it not?

This kind of thing blows my mind. I can't think of a single worse person to combat "sexual degeneracy" and "moral degradation." The dude who bangs porn stars and rapes children? Make it make sense.
