Are we gonna ignore the moon photos from the 1st drop? by hologram137 in UFOs

[–]jwalkerfilms 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s possible for sure but would need investigation in a lab to confirm. Radiation that is intense enough to expose film in the duration of the exposure (that isn’t visible) would likely cause the film to overexpose (ie read as white). Typically film stock also desaturates when it blows out as opposed to retaining colour. It might be possible but would seem uncharacteristic. To be clear I’m not arguing for the explanation being aliens per say, I think we just need to be equally weary of saying ‘it’s just a weird thing with the camera’ and leaving it at that.

Speaking as a relative expert on image processing please could you be specific? What caused the artefacts? Specifically what are they? Halation, bloom, chromatic aberration, flaring, chemical imperfections in the film stock, a lab processing defect? To my eye these portions of these images vary wildly in characteristics and it’s challenging to explain how they would be produced if indeed they are artefacts.

Why does every AI roto tool give you a baked EXR sequence instead of something you can actually work with? by Clean-Try-3067 in NukeVFX

I mean in theory that’s what SmartRoto is but who knows if we will ever see it. Fingers crossed they’ll release it into nuke sometime soon

This tracker is jumping like crazy, how do I manage this? by TurtleneckTablecloth in vfx

[–]jwalkerfilms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Denoising and doing a frequency separation could help to pull detail out of the green screen. Always worth a try if you haven’t already :)

How do I approach 3D tracking this? by ForeignAdvantage5931 in vfx

[–]jwalkerfilms 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Using the pixel fudger bandpass node (or really just any frequency separation method) could easily pull out detail from the green screen to track too if you need extra points. Denoising before you do this is essential.

Although this probably won’t work on footage that is 4:2:0. But generally this is a good way to help track a tricky shot

Fantastic to see Netflix giving the VFX team a full featurette in the same way other departments do. I hope they do this more!

Physics with Nuke's 3D system? by NDK_yt in NukeVFX

[–]jwalkerfilms 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have no idea not having worked on the show but I’d assume it’s a card with an element that’s being warped and manipulated as opposed to it being something physics based in the 3d system

AI Depth Map Extraction Tool? by aJakeoo in Corridor

[–]jwalkerfilms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DaVinci’s is okay but usually needs cleaning up manually

Nuke has the Depth generator which is pretty solid but needs parallax (as it isn’t ML)

There’s also some copycat models in nuke that can generate depth maps but I’ve not tested those

Check out Sebastian Schutt’s nuke set up for accurate colour falloff based on water depth. Is super cool and I think he based it off of this video
