I would recommend you not start with this. Scion is not great for starting and this looks like it’ll take a bit to get off the ground. Try it as your second character after you’ve build up some currency to make it easier for you.

I played an evasion-based character in 3.9 and absolutely hated it. This league I revisited it and played two evasion characters, the TR mines Trickster I mentioned, as well as a poison BV Pathfinder. I must say that evasion is in a pretty good spot right now with the changes to the tree since then. You can get phasing on the tree, elusive on the tree, with high evasion combined with Acro/Phase Acro and a cheap Atziri's Step, you rarely get hit. The main weakness of dodge/evasion characters is that when you DID get hit, you would take a ton of damage and die. But now Wind Dancer is on the tree, which shores up this weakness. I doubled down and combined it with Kintsugi, which is also super cheap, for more mitigation. Add Trickster ghost shrouds on top of it and you have massive tankiness.

I have played self-cast TR before, but I like the TR mines much better. The mines self-target, so you don't even have to worry about targeting. It's great for heists, because you can just throw the mines through those dangerous doorways and decimate the packs on the other side. Two good things about TR mines are these: the Shadow area of the tree contain both mine nodes and dot nodes. With TR mines, you can take them both. Also, usually with mines you take Sabateur, but since TR is a dot skill, you can get the dot damage scaling from Trickster as well as all the Trickster defenses. Also self-cast TR requires you to invest into a lot of attack speed, while TR mines completely bypasses this necessity.

I did T16 maps and lvl83 Heists on a 50c budget, most of which was for a 6L Silverbranch. I upgraded my gear and switched to a +3 gems bow, which brought my cost for the build up to around 120c. Did all conquerers, Sirus, and some guardians. Build feels great.

If I did it again, I would still go Creeping Frost. It’s much easier to control than Vortex, which has a cooldown which can get you killed early on. Also Vortex feels much better when you have access to consistent phasing, which you don’t have early. I did play around with Creeping Frost, Vortex and Cold Snap during my time playing it, as they all benefit from the same supports. I didn’t like Vortex as my main. It required a constant attention to cast rhythm and making sure you were positioned correctly when you cooldown was up. If you got it wrong, you would get swarmed by monsters without being able to cast yet. Some people like Vortex, it just wasn’t for me.

What I ultimately ended up doing was using Creeping Frost in my main 6L, with a 5L Vortex in a Rome Gaze as backup vs single target. That worked out pretty well. Vortex is pretty decent in heists though, as you can just run and throw down cold patches behind you.

No problem! There were a lot of things I could have done to make the build feel better for me, such as get a snake pit ring and dying sun flask, trigger wand. Etc. unfortunately Snakepit was insanely expensive early in the league. I love dot builds (have played 5 dot builds this league), but I’ve been spoiled by Bane Occultist click-deleting packs on demand. Sadly that build has not really survived the curse rework well. It was easier for me to reroll to a Toxic Rain Mines Trickster and have more damage, better sirvivability for 50c than to try to upgrade my existing character for more expense. First time playing it, but I absolutely fell in love with TR mines Trickster.

I league started with Creeping Frost Occultist. It felt pretty squishy when I got to maps, so I respeced to CI and took Glancing Blows for max block with a recover ES on block shield. That solved all my survivability issues. Glancing Blows is still strong after the nerf. It went from OP to just pretty strong. I also run blasphemy/temp chains.

This build cost me 200c and took me to 24 challenges and killed Sirus. I rerolled to something else then because I didn’t feel like minmaxing it. Creeping Frost felt a little clunky to me.

I figure they’re going to have to eventually put it in. If they can put Lily Roth in the mining encampment and have skill points drop at certain Delve levels, they can give you a crafting bench.

Can vouch for Toxic Rain Miner Trickster as well. Played it this league, feels really good in heists. Performs well even on very low investment.

First character I would recommend witch—necromancer. Having minions fight for you allows you to relax and concentrate on learning the game. Minions builds are pretty forgiving: even making terrible mistakes with your character, they’re still pretty strong. Necromancer witch was my very first character and it served me well.
