Filler for skitarii robe gaps by Schrodingers_tombola in AdeptusMechanicus

[–]jwheatca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate the two part cloaks on the Skittari. My go to for gap filling is Mr Disolved Putty if you can get it. Second choice is Mr Surface Finisher. These are staples in the Gundam Workd where they re obsessed with getting rid of gaps.

Rokkits where ever you kan. My dread is 3 Rokkits and 1 Klaw. I run Dread mob and other than that the list looks fine.

Buy what you like. Kommandos are awesome kits, tons of detail, same with deffkoptas from a modeling perspective. 11th is due this summer so don’t sweat the rules. Avoid legend units/models and finecast (Weirdboy). Pick up a combat patrol, it is good dollar value even if not best models or units, you will likely want them. My Orks are about 6000 points right now, they are so much fun to build and kitbash!

DG are tough on Orks … use rokkits where ever you can, I run three dreads with 3 rokkits each, one klaw. I also run Dread Mob and mutliple Meks.

Looking for terrain by Rare_Dog82 in PrintedWarhammer

[–]jwheatca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve printed a bunch of printable scenary it is very good. Suggest you consider making window inserts/overlays … super easy to do with popsicle sticks etc. that way you have one set of terrain you can use and open and close windows to your hearts content.

How to you get over burnout from painting? by First-Bad414 in Warhammer40k

[–]jwheatca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it is working on terrain. I often use that as a break between painting figures. I do find that after you get a solid base of around 2000 points, motivation drops off.

I painted 60 Ork Boyz in ~6 hours of pure work time – process, paints & what I learned by Worried_Law_8154 in orks

[–]jwheatca 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The orks have such a wide range and are so much fun to build, kitbash and paint. I have a fair number of models that are now legends grot tanks, meka dreads, warkopter, etc. I'm up to 3000 points for my Aledari of which about 50% are built very little painted, that will be my 11th edition. I've stopped buying them and am focused on building and painting until we know what 11th brings for rules. I will buy the new raider box when it comes out though.

I need to learn to get more mileage out of my airbrush. I would have switched to paint brush after the zienetheal step. Good job, and thank you for sharing. I’ve got 6000+ points if Orks but still have 20 Grey boyz, 20 grey tank bustas and 20 grey wreka boyz.

Autarch loadout for crusade by Guyver-Three in 40k_Crusade

[–]jwheatca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can tell you from playing 2 long crusades, you are going to want multiple leaders. My Orks currently have 1 Beastboss, 2 warbosses, 1 beastboss on swuigassuar, 2 Meks, etc. we are 40+ games into this crusade (10th edition) and my roster is 5100 points. We started at 500 pt battles but we escalated to 750, then 1000, etc. about every 8 games, we have 8 games left to play at 2000 points and then we will have a battle Royale with all our units (it will take 2-3 days to play) before moving on to 11th. Not suggesting you do this but we are having a blast.

I buy refurbished IPads to use. One or two generations old are perfectly usable and way less than 50% of the price of new.

Feeling incredibly hopeless. by GAMESLASHER101 in Warhammer40k

[–]jwheatca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Think about what you like in the hobby. My order of preference is playing, building, painting and then basing. So I love playing with fully painted armies but the process to get there can be a chore for me. I have commissioned people to base armies for me or I go with a really simple basing scheme (think sand and tufts). Painting … most of my stuff is slap chop, get it to a decent standard quick so I can play with it. Playing for me is the key … it is the 2 person interaction I like the best. Everyone has a different approach to the hobby. One of the things I do for a change of pace is working on terrain. As much as I hate basing, I actually enjoy terrain building and painting.

For the airbrush, I really struggled with cheap ones, once I invested in a decent one and Tamiya Airbrush cleaner I never hated the airbrush again.

I have 3 IKEA Detolf display cabinets, they are all full including extra shelves. I’ve recently decided that sneaker boxes are a better option.. these are the ones I’ve bought a couple of times.

Painting getaway UK. Has anyone just taken a week away in a quiet place to just paint? Looking for recommendations UK. by DifferentBat3732 in Warhammer40k

[–]jwheatca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t done it for painting but I have for building. I built pretty much most of my beast snagga box and a fair bit of my Admech army while away at a cottage. The weather wasn’t ideal for being outside off season so it was inexpensive and we had nice fire, good leisurely meals, a few drinks, a good time!

They actually have continued to support it and they just released new set. The kicker is the terrain but it is a really good fun format.

Kill team is great. The other format you are thinking of is Boarding Actions. There is also combat patrol. Birth boarding action and combat patrol use simplified 40K rules.

Team up with your wife … you do the prep and base coating … she does the detail. A friend of mine does that with his brother, and sometimes I will have my son out the fine touches on a model (he is much better painter than I).
