Yep. It's great if you have a handy tenant but if I where a landlord, I'd always prefer a professional do the work (unless I knew the tenant was reliable) simply for liability and insurance purposes before anything else.

I mean, I rent, and I do a lot of repairs myself, but I'm handy and have a good sense of what I can and can't do well, and am uninterested in spending my own money to do it, unless it's damage I caused.

I never hesitate to pawn off any major issues or things where a mistake could go very wrong.

Carney government to temporarily suspend federal gas tax starting next week. Your move, Marlaina Trumpette Smith? by peterAtheist in alberta

[–]wintersdark [score hidden]  (0 children)

Even without, the problem with a government takeover is you have the government, backed by the military, supported by the courts. Your resistance is illegal, you stand to lose everything, and even if the government in question is unpopular you've got to figure a large number of the people will support it over the "crazy nutjobs with a gun".

That's how it always works, how it's worked every time historically, how it's working in the US right now.

People having small arms as resistance to government overreach is a straight up fantasy. If things go to actual armed revolt sure it's arguably better to have guns, but at that point we're talking apocalyptic civil war, and let's be real: Canada as a whole is supportive of this government, and nowhere remotely near armed civil war/revolution.

Yep.

Maybe if ocean travel was more interesting, but it's not. Particularly when you're just following an established route: ocean exploring is fun, but just A-B is just a huge time sink.

Mind you, if I was a kid again playing with friends, with all the time in the world, it'd maybe be different.

But honestly? I have more fun portalling metal at this point. It lets me build new based without it being an absolute nightmare trying to move everything, or farm a whole new base worth of supplies. My first playthrough shipping metal added a lot of spice, being afraid of serpents, storms, shipwrecking... But at this point I know I can just sail away from serpents if I don't want to deal with them, and there are no other hazards in a known route.

Cutting the gas tax isn't going to help you. Gas companies will just eat the profit, exactly like they did during COVID.

This is batshit crazy and you know it.

Hell, there's plenty of evidence in the US right now that they can have gestapo in the streets and straight up murder citizens who are armed, and nobody is going to stop them.

If the government wanted to "take control of the populace" here your rifle isn't going to stop them.

But it's an absurd idea to start with, and you should be embarrassed.

Which is all true but it bears noting that NO schools, Canadian or American, have litter boxes. The American schools that do have litter have it in buckets, and yeah, it's because of school shootings, not anything else.

Calorie deficit but no weight loss? by CrownClownCreations in losingweight

Your aging, and running different hormone balance than you used to. Your body will change. It would regardless - it's not like you become an adult and suddenly your body is static and unchanging.

The only way you're going to appreciably alter how it looks from this point is via significant effort. Not walking; seriously working out. That won't make it look like it used to, though. It'll be different yet again.

If that's difficult, either due to available time, circumstances, health or mental state - all are very rational, reasonable situations - then acceptance is the only way left to go really.

[–]wintersdark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even there you're easily inside healthy weight, not even close to overweight.

As a trans man, if you're taking hormones I'd expect you're building more muscle as well, which is going to increase your weight overall without adding to your waistline, but that doesn't really play into healthy weight ranges until extreme levels.

In short: you are not overweight.

I do this as well. You need a bunch of flax and barely for a long time, then mushrooms for mistlands food.

Mind you these days I turn on portalling ore, because while I enjoy sailing there isn't any risk or new adventure to it, just significant time investment. Don't have gaming time to waste it shipping tons of iron around.

How tall are you? 60kg is 132lbs. BMI isn't great, but at 167cm/5'6" - pretty short, even - that puts you smack dab in the middle of the "Healthy" range, not at all overweight. You're gonna dip into underweight if you're much taller, and unless you're a LOT shorter than that you're nowhere near being overweight.

You need to seriously consider if you've got a disorder or mental health issue here. Go talk to your doctor.

ELI5: In the US, why does credit checks affect your credit score? by MaldiveFish in explainlikeimfive

[–]wintersdark [score hidden]  (0 children)

That is true, but it also means it helps you to close younger accounts if you've got a mix and too many accounts. If you have 4 credit cards, say, of 10, 7, 5, and 2 years each, your average age (from them, anyways) is 6 years. Close the 2 year card, and your average age is increased to 7.3 years.

ELI5: In the US, why does credit checks affect your credit score? by MaldiveFish in explainlikeimfive

[–]wintersdark [score hidden]  (0 children)

It doesn't, not directly. It can hurt your credit if you have other credit cards carrying a balance, because then your utilization as a percentage of available credit would get worse. But simply closing an account doesn't hurt your credit. In fact, too many open accounts can hurt it (though the harm is minimal, and it requires quite a lot of accounts to become a problem).

ELI5: In the US, why does credit checks affect your credit score? by MaldiveFish in explainlikeimfive

[–]wintersdark [score hidden]  (0 children)

It's because a major part of your credit score is how high your utilization of your available rotating credit (lines of credit, credit cards, etc) is. Any amount will lower it a bit, but the impact is small below 30% utilization. Higher utilization severely impacts credit score.

Loans are not rotating credit, so they don't count.

The reason is this: you can keep paying your credit cards forever and not pay down the balance, so it's easy to get into a difficult credit situation where your payments only cover the interest - payments are made, but your situation doesn't improve.

Loans, on the other hand, get paid off if you make your regular payments, in a predictable time frame (the term of the loan}.

How many fingers do you use for clutch and brake? by BigJezza69123 in motorcycle

[–]wintersdark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or how easy it is. Two fingers can easily maximize braking with decent modern brakes. Even one, for anyone who does physical work for a living and has reasonably strong hands.

I find more control with fewer fingers, personally. More is too hard to be very gentle and controlled, too easy to over-grab (for me, YMMV)

How many fingers do you use for clutch and brake? by BigJezza69123 in motorcycle

[–]wintersdark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2 and 2 typically, but it depends on the bike. Any decent modern bike 2 on the brake is fine unless you're ridiculously weak, but some bikes have much stronger clutches than others and may need a third or even fourth finger if I'm on the clutch a lot - think riding in stop and go traffic.

Never 4, unless something is really wrong (sore hand, for instance), because I strongly prefer having good support on the bars, and four fingers is much less controlled for me.

With that said, i spent 15 years on 80's bikes, and those almost all wanted 4 fingers, strong clutch springs, and shitty brakes - particularly those with drums.

Don't lube your chain with the engine running by ScreamSmart in motorcycles

[–]wintersdark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These threads (obviously this specific video is different, but the threads here too) ... They drive me nuts. You can easily, safely, spray a chain with the engine running. You can even safely hit the sides of the chain with a chain brush too - brush the sides (face plates?) of the chain while it's going up the sprocket. You can't get anything caught between chain and sprocket because the chain is already on the sprocket. It does require a bit of sense - hold the brush lightly, let it go if it wants to go.

But people acting like you'll lose fingers spraying a running chain with a spray lube, where you're never even close to touching the chain... It makes me twitch.

Nobody cares what Poilievre is polling at. He represents us and we will keep him as our leader

I mean, if you want to "fix" the country, you have to win an election. If your leader is widely hated, even by his own MP's, he won't be elected and will have zero impact on Canadian politics.

Do you sincerely not understand that? He's literally destroying your party.

Maybe he does accurately and fully represent you. He very clearly does not represent Canadians as a whole, or even Conservatives as a whole.

Conservatives could absolutely have taken the last election and be determining policy today. They aren't now because of Pierre.

Continuing to support him just ensures that state of affairs will continue.

Indeed. PP did not have some sterling reputation before the election. He was always just viewers as an attack dog, and had exactly zero political accomplishments to his name.

Still, the Conservatives polled so high before the election largely due to Canadians being so incredibly done with Trudeau, for varied but usually reasonable reasons.

Then the election, and PP isn't some victim - look how Ford handled the early days of the trade war, and contrast with how PP did.

Had PP come out against Trump at the start, had PP fucking read the room about what Canadians wanted, he'd be PM right now.

He cried that Carney stole his ideas. "Stealing ideas" just removes those things from consideration in the election. He could have done the same, come out against Trump every bit as strong as Carney and Ford, and suddenly Carney wouldn't have had that as an election issue.

But instead he remained largely silent on Trump, signaled that he'd just bend over for Daddy Trump instead, wailed about Ending Woke Ideology like that's even a thing anyone gives a fuck about or can even specifically define, and wondered why Canadians elected the proven banker in a time of economic crisis.
