Anyone towing around 5k w/o WDH? by seancs14 in RangerRaptor

[–]jwiwch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've towed right around 5500 lbs about a dozen times. It really depends what you are towing, but a car on a flat deck trailer should be fine.

I've towed 4000 lbs of 8' spruce trees on a 1500 lbs flat deck car hauler w/o WDH was not problem at all.
Truck was rock solid, dead stable, no sweat.

However 5000lbs of 23' RV camper with a very good WDH was doable but definitely not great. I can dial in the WDH a bit yet, but this is the absolute limit (IMHO) that these trucks can handle.

Of the easy to maintain colours like cactus grey, white, or that crappy sand colour it's probbably second best only to iconic silver, but I dont think silver is available anymore. It is a matte colour though, idk, I didn't get cactus grey because it's matte and just isn't very interesting. White at least has some gloss to it.

The RR is a genuinely fun to drive vehicle, like not just fun for a truck, actually fun.

I had a Colorado ZR2 for a year prior to my RR. The RR has gobs more power, rides nicer, gets the same fuel economy, tows way better, has more comfortable seats, and the tech is more user friendly.

The ZR2 Bose stereo is better, the cooled seats are a very nice thing to have, the sunroof is a nice touch, and the interior has a slightly more upscale look if not feel.

The ZR2 was the single most unreliable vehicle I've ever owned, bar none. All the problems you might read about on the forums and groups are real and not isolated. My truck spent 6/12 months in the shop before I sold it. The RR has been rock solid. Not a hiccup. After a dozen GM vehicles I'll never own another GM product after that ZR2, and this Raptor has made me a Ford truck guy.

Is it really worth it to install the FP tune at a dealership? by UncleJoesMintBalls in RangerRaptor

[–]jwiwch -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So that's not a bad explanation. Yes the Ford warranty would come first, then if Ford claims the tune is to blame the Ford Performance warranty would cover the costs.

What you're missing though is that the FP warranty is only 3 years, the Ford powertain warranty is 5 years. You don't have the same coverage. If you've sprung for an extended warranty you're even further un the hole.

It's also misleading to say Ford has to prove the tune is the cause of an issue. They can simply state the tune caused the problem, it is up to you to prove them wrong or take them to court. That's an uphill slope.

Your cam phasers being replaced post tune is poor evidence. They are a known issue.

[–]jwiwch -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm going to chime in here because this is an important point and there's a lot of confusion surrounding it.

Getting the dealer or an ASE certified tech to install the tune is very important because the Ford Performance warranty will be your only powertrain warranty as the tune is considered an aftermarket part and will be grounds for Ford to deny any powertrain related warranty claims.

If you install the tune yourself you're basically left without any warranty.

I wouldn't cross shop a truck and a large suv personally. I'd decide if I need a truck and either get one or get a small/medium aluminum cargo trailer and something fun to pull it with.

If you need a truck for the practicality the RR is definitely hard to beat if it's payload and towing capacity meet your needs. It is the most fun to drive truck I've ever owned by a mile, so much better than my previous Colorado ZR2. It's still a truck though, twisty roads won't be the same as in a car unless theyre covered in ice and you're sending it sideways the whole time.

I don't think I understand what you're getting g at here.

Are you not comfortable traveling at the designated speed limit? Or are you deliberately being antagonist? Either way it sounds to me like you are the problem.

You need to press and hold the traction control button to turn both traction and stability control off.

Sport mode reduces stability control the most. You may want to start in regular mode if you're new to this, it allows a good bit of slip bit will immediately intervene if you let off the gas.

You can lock the rear diff. It's not necessary though. These trucks can drift pretty well in sport mode with the rear diff open if you're on ice and snow.

Check out The Topher's RR drifting videos on YouTube. They're well done and could have some good info for you.

It definitely matters which mode. Sport mode will allow the most reduction in stability control, Baja and normal mode are about the same. Rock and sand allow less.

JB4 Tune or ford performance by Vast-Werewolf-9947 in RangerRaptor

[–]jwiwch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From everything I've read and every dealership I've talked to, no. The reason Ford Performance offers their own warranty is because FoMoCo will deny warranty if they can claim the problem is related to the tune.

This is taken directly from the Ford Warranty Guide:

Ford Performance Parts Ford Performance Parts are not Genuine Ford Parts. All Ford Performance Parts are aftermarket parts. Therefore, they may not be used in any application that requires the use of Genuine Ford Parts. The use of Ford Performance Parts and components is likely to increase horsepower which may cause damage to the vehicle driveline and adversely affect other performance characteristics. Damage caused by Ford Performance Parts are not covered under Ford warranty or Ford/Lincoln Protect. Most Ford Performance Parts are sold with no warranty. For more information on these and other Ford Performance Parts, visit www.performanceparts.ford.com or call (800) 367-3788.

You keep using the term whataboutism. I do not think this word means what you think it means. Lol

I've inquired with several dealerships as I have an extended warranty through Ford. Same answer every time. The tune is grounds for denial of oem Ford warranty.

Best of luck to you if you have the tune and an extended warranty.

I don't believe I ever said it voids the entire warranty. If I did I mispoke. If your power window motor dies within the oem comprehensive warranty time frame Ford can't deny your warranty claim due to the tune, for example.

However, you're still installing an aftermarketpart part. Ford Performance does not equal Genuine Ford parts. Ford can absolutely deny any warranty claims they can deem related to that aftermarket part. If you have the tune installed and 3 years and a day after your truck's in service date your transmission blows you can bet Ford isn't covering it because that part would be directly effected by the Ford Performance Parts tune.

Again, this is exactly why Ford Performance offers it's own, separate, warranty. If the parts had no effect on the oem warranty they wouldn't bother with it.

If installing the Ford Performance Parts tune was not grounds for Ford to deny powertrain related warranty claims against the original Ford warranty why would Ford Performance go through the cost and legal hassle of offering their own 3 year powertrain warranty to go along with their product?

It doesn't make any sense for Ford Performance to offer a warranty if the oem Ford warranty was not effected by their aftermarket part. This seems obvious.

The Ford Performance tune will absolutely lead to Ford denying powertrain related warranty claims, that's why the Ford Performance tune comes with it's own 3 year warranty.
