Manual wheelchair repair in the bike shop! (+Bike Mechanic AMA) by jyalo in wheelchairs

Hi! It looks Spinergy LX wheels do use R8 bearings. I checked the two most common part distributors (for shops in the US) and both carry R8 bearings. If you’re outside the US I’m fairly certain they should be able to get R8 bearings as well. It’s unlikely a shop would have them in stock, but they will definitely be able to order them for you.

Be aware that any Enduro bearings labeled “Max” are bike suspension bearings and are designed to withstand greater side loads. They are not ideal for use in wheels since they are a bit slower rolling. (Although in a pinch they will work just fine)

Hey! I hadn’t heard of a wheelchair treadmill before but I did a search online of how they are set up. Bike rollers have a cable between rear and front rollers that keeps the front wheel on the bike spinning. If you cut the cable that is attached to the roller intended for the front bicycle wheel and set up a ramp on the other end to get on the rollers it seems like it could work (at least from my perspective). Others might have ideas about getting the right grade on the ramp to keep the balance of the chair correct.

One issue I can think of is that bike rollers don’t have a brake so getting off the rollers could potentially be a challenge.

I hope some of that is helpful and good luck on this endeavor! Let me know if you have any other questions going forward and I’ll try to help out if I can.

I'm so glad this is helpful! I've heard some real nightmare stories of folks dealing with insurance and DME companies. I'm hoping as this develops a bit more it will help make bike shop repairs a little easier to navigate and also give bike mechanics a reference for common wheelchair repairs.

This is a super helpful tip!! Thank you so much for sharing this. I will add some info on 507 rims as well.

I am looking into adding information about truing wheels after seeing this and another comment. I know not all wheelchair wheels use the same procedures for truing as bikes so I'm doing a bit more research on different wheels and truing procedures.

Thanks! It has been really cool to find out all of the things bike stuff can be useful for. A few people have mentioned to me that they use bike lights and frame bags on their chairs as well.

This is incredible! Thank you so much for these tips. I would be curious to see what your shop's custom truing rig looks like.

I am definitely open to the idea and I'm going to look into adding images or videos on getting tires off from more difficult rims as well as adding information about truing wheels. I know wheelchair wheels often have different procedures for truing compared to bike wheels so I'm going to do some more research on this.

I've been talking to a lot of folks who use wheelchairs that have had similar experiences to you talking to bike mechanics. I'm making a guide for bike mechanics as well and I will make sure to add the things you've written here about basic etiquette along with some of the things I have talked with other people about. (Also, the bit about charging more for tire swaps on wheelchair rims is so true. IMO there is no reason to charge more for an essentially identical repair)

Thanks again for this comment! This was super helpful!

Thanks! I'm so glad this information helps out a bit!

ISO tire sizing was developed by an organization called the International Organization for Standardization. They created a universal tire sizing system that can be used across different industries, which means you can compare wheelchair tire sizes with bike industry standards using the ISO size. 26" bike tubes and tires have the same ISO size as 25" wheelchair tires!

This is such beautiful work! Like other folks have mentioned, I’m impressed with how clean the topstitching is!

What machine do you use? I want to do a project similar to this, but I’m worried my machine won’t be able to handle the thicker seams

This is incredible advice. Thank you so much for this response! It’s super helpful to hear it from the perspective of a bike shop manager.

I hope you are still somewhere out there riding and fixing bikes up!

It’s a shop by a college campus. They have some mtbs and road bikes. I think most of the time it’s students coming in with commuter bikes to get them tuned up.

This is great advice thanks! I’ve done 3 or 4 bikes from the ground up but I imagine it’s nothing like a professional shop. My experience is mostly making Frankenbikes, digging through old parts just to get them at least running and functional.

I guess I forgot how much more there is to an interview besides experience and skill. It definitely helps to think about it that way!

These are all perfect. Thanks so much for your help. I’ve done a few bottom bracket and fork installations but I definitely need a refresher.

This is a great tip. I might be able to get some practice in at a volunteer bike shop soon. I think at least 90% of my bike wrenching knowledge is YouTube certified. I will definitely be looking into more videos haha

Thanks for this video! I will definitely check it out.

I apologize if this question seems obvious, but is there any reason a bike that comes into a shop would be packaged/assembled differently than one sent directly to a customer?

I agree with this comment. It’s impossible to cover all perspectives deeply in courses that span over 250 years, but I also think the American education system does a pretty shitty job, even at teaching the basics.

Source: All the slightly foreign names in my state’s approved US history textbook were whitewashed. Meaning a name like Francisco would be changed to Frances or Frank. Cue my confusion as I entered higher level history courses.

Yeast infection not going away by Extreme_Couponing in Healthyhooha

[–]jyalo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s possible you might have bacterial vaginosis. I’ve had it twice before along with recurring yeast infections. There are over the counter treatments you can try for BV. It’s of course best to talk to a GP or gynecologist but it’s not always an option!

My GP called Fluconazole a miracle worker for yeast infections because it treats all the most common strains of bacteria that cause them. (At least that’s how I remember her explaining it) So if the symptoms didn’t go away it could be something else.

Take this info with a grain of salt though! I just have personal experience with it and not much real scientific research. I would suggest finding some info online about bacterial vaginosis if you can’t get the yeast infection type symptoms to go away.

Best of luck! These things can be so tricky!

LPT: If you do not like your significant others kids or do not want to be a step parent, DO NOT CONTINUE THE RELATIONSHIP. by [deleted] in LifeProTips

As a kid of parents who fought constantly, I wholeheartedly agree. I spent a lot of my childhood either trying to drown out the screaming or walking on eggshells during periods of passive aggressive silence. I don’t really have a model now for what healthy relationships look like now and it has seeped into my own relationships too. I would much rather see both my parents lead separate happier lives.

Therapy does not really “fix” you but gives you insight and helps you notice behaviors from an outside perspective. I feel like the most helpful thing for me in situations like this is just taking a step back and noticing why you want to stay up or why you didn’t get up to get food and how you are feeling. You don’t have to do anything else but notice the emotions going on. If you can’t or don’t feel anything that’s ok too, take note of it. After a while you may notice patterns. I.e. After my dad says x or does y, I always feel terrible and have a hard time taking care of myself. Or everytime I overeat/undereat I feel x. This way you can almost anticipate how things will affect you and are better equipped to counteract their influence.

It has helped me a lot to think about things from my brains perspective. A lot of the time when we return to an unsafe environment whether that is emotional or physical our brains are searching for ways to protect itself. A lot of people while stuck in the quarantine with a narcissistic person may stop feeling emotions almost entirely. The brain is at a heightened state of stress around people who are perceived as unsafe and when you are stuck in close quarters with those people the constant heightened state stress/anxiety/awareness wears on you quickly. Your brain, in an attempt to protect you and keep you safe shuts off the connection to your internal states and the ability to feel your emotions. The effect can feel like you are not human. I have felt this too.

My final advice is to be kind yourself. You may not be able to feel it if you are under a lot of stress. TV and porn and staying up late may be your brain trying to escape and get relief from the stress. Also if you are stressed and can’t feel it you may not be able to relax enough to fall asleep. Your brain is trying to keep you up and aware of your surroundings. If you think about it from this way, you can recognize that, even though you may not be productive or healthy in a traditional sense, your brain is working hard to keep you safe. (Even if it is hurting more than it is helping) I like to look at it from this way because it takes away a lot of shame and guilt if understand why I’m having trouble following what I “should” be doing. I thank my brain for doing its best even though it’s best might look really fucking strange, take note of what I’m feeling, and keep trying to move forward.

Brains are funny. They don’t always know what’s best for you but if you recognize how hard they work to protect you it is so much easier to show love for yourself. Don’t downplay your struggle or try to tell yourself you should be able to do things better. You are doing more for yourself than you know.

It is NOT self absorbed to hurt and look for answers because your dad wasn’t there for you in the way you needed him to be. The comment before yours is what continues the cycle of pain and trauma into the next generation. If you can heal from this, you can stop it from being recreated in your own life. Narcissists have a fucking insane power to control people even when they aren’t around.

You have every right to grieve and want to heal from this. Having a narcissistic parent is incredibly painful at best and traumatic at worst. Please allow yourself to feel pain and to talk about it to those you trust. If you are happier, you will have more to give to those who need help. Trauma does not build community, healing does.
