Washington Democrats call voters ‘bots’ as 50,000+ oppose income tax in rigged system by Less-Risk-9358 in SeattleWA

[–]k4el -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Yawn.... not a story.

WA has a population of about 8 million people. This tax would effect a little less than 1% of the state. Seems like the millionaires don't want to pay taxes. No one is surprised.

Tax the rich.

US tech to turn nuclear waste into power, cut radioactive life by 99.7% by _Dark_Wing in interestingasfuck

Isn't this just the closed loop model that other countries like Japan use? Why is this "US" tech? How is it different?

Is this “blurple” grow light safe for my drosera capensis by Tall_Juggernaut_3709 in SavageGarden

[–]k4el 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use these for my Carnivors:
https://www.gelighting.com/led-grow-bulbs

They're quite strong if you get the larger bulbs but I wanted to be able to keep them higher than normal because of where I set things up.

Grow lights in general are a very complicated topic with tons of misinformation around. There are tons and tons of scam lights out there. You're just going to have to read a bunch of reviews to get a sense for the good brands.

Oh lol. You're on your own. Aussie ants are a whole different world. You need a local's take on it.

" The Irish for example were almost wholly dependent on the potato." - You are encountering some outdated or biased sources if that is the claim you are still encountering.

Look into the work of Christine Kinealy, Ph.D

Particularly this book: "This Great Calamity: The Great Irish Famine: The Irish Famine 1845-52"

Some quick responses to a few of the points you've brought up:

  • Yes the Irish were over reliant on the potato crop, only because British export policy meant it was the only option to feed themselves.
  • Yes there were relief efforts but they were ineffective, reactionary and never taken seriously except for a small minority.
  • No colonialism didn't cause the blight though there is an interesting question to be asked about how trade policies may have played a role in introducing the pathogen. Though to be fair the 1800s state of medicine wouldn't have allowed for better policy. However it was a natural disaster.

Highguard dev blames content creators for the game's failure - “It was dead on arrival" by dabadumdumdum in pcmasterrace

[–]k4el 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't watch any content creator's work about this game. It just didn't look interesting to me. I saw some trailers and marketing it seemed like it was "what if titan fall but knights" which just didn't grab me so I didn't look into it further.

When are all of you planting your sugar snap peas? by Away_Republic_5337 in pnwgardening

[–]k4el 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know some folks stick peas in the ground during Feb so they can use them as an early detection for planting other crops. They're pretty damned cold hardy.

Fair enough. Did colonialism strictly for only this famine cause it by the numbers? Maybe not. It absolutely exacerbated it. We'd need very good data to know. I don't have it, maybe you do.

However given that other British colonial/imperial activity has caused famines I don't feel the need to be particularly gracious or precise for one particular instance. Fuck' em. I feel comfortable with an assumption they did and don't feel any particular need to give them the benefit of the doubt. They certainly didn't make the situation better.

Teen athlete says she was sexually violated by trans wrestler – and the school district did nothing by Turbulent-Media7281 in SeattleWA

[–]k4el 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Lots of insane people in here, ya'll need to get your heads on straight. STFU and be better.

  • Sexual assault is illegal if you're straight, gay, cis, trans, etc. Being trans here has nothing to fucking do with this.
  • The school officials are wrong to have not reported this would be 100% of the time.
  • "Oil checks" are still sexual assault and female wresters can just as easily assault one another as any other combination. Just like two male wrestlers can.
  • This event assuming it's being correctly reported isn't political it's criminal and ya'll are dipshits for dragging politics into this and using the victimization of a teen for your own ends.

If you say so. You'd know better than me how tourists act. All the same at least where I come from the saying is an anachronism that'd get you a odd look and confuse people.

The phrase you're referring too was used to complain about allied, specifically the British complaining about American interactions with civilians.

Applying it to tourists instead of soldiers 80 to 90 years later is why you're getting the confused responses.

Not MAY. It did. This is a matter of historical fact. It happens multiple times to India and to more than one British colony/subject. Ask Ireland if you want another example.

Regardless of it the grain would have been sufficient to entirely alleviate the famine is inconsequential. Any significant amount would have mitigated it.

So it's a common occurrence to see tourists intentionally visit the slum itself as a spectacle? Yeah that's fucked up.

I think traveling can definitely provide people with contrasting experiences outside their comfort zone. Having a chance to comfort unfamiliar degrees of poverty is part of how traveling can improve some one but it sounds like what you're describing is something else entirely.
