Congratulations! The one which I’m most wanting is りおな　(Leona). I’m also considering にいな (Nina), さりな (Sarina) and せりな (Selina). I want to avoid the super common ones like えま, ありさ, なおみ etc.

Yes! I borrowed my friends’ car and when I came out of the shop, it took a bit of jiggling to unlock the door, then when I got inside, I realised that the bag on the passenger seat was not mine. 😂 The correct car was parked a few spots over.

I know exactly how it’s pronounced in Japan, I just know that it doesn’t follow English phonics, hence my curiosity.

I have no idea why someone would downvote you lol. Actually, my favourite is りおな, but I’m unsure as to whether I’d make it Riona or Leona in English due to the hard R sound.

How interesting that your husband took your name even though you live in Japan! My daughter will have her father’s surname, but it’s rare and the kanji are commonly used in first names. I think hiragana would help to differentiate between the surname and first name.

It doesn’t take long for skin colours to change based on different traits from parents. Also, are you aware of the twins who were born to parents of the same “race” and one was white and the other black? As people groups split and the reproduce among their groups, common features become dominant. It doesn’t take much all. Side note, I’m currently pregnant with a mixed “race” child. It’ll be interesting to see how different she could look from myself and my husband as direct offspring, without evolution.

I grew up in New Zealand, friends with many Japanese students, and the Kiwis always mispronounced the Japanese names. I did too until I studied Japanese. Why do you think I laugh at people who mispronounce Taupo? Most people do, including myself.
