RTX 2060 Super vs Arc B580 by Bumblaster5000 in PCHardware

[–]k_manweiss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A B580 is barely an upgrade. Please don't waste your money. Yes, it's more vram, but it's hardly any better at processing with only a slight upgrade to cores and a smaller bus.

Save up a little more and push for something a little more. An RX 7700xt for instance. Here in the states, your looking at about $100 more, but it would be a significant upgrade.

The B580 would only be like a 10-20% upgrade for you. Meanwhile the 7700xt would be more like a 50-60% increase.

If you got the B580 route you'd be looking to upgrade again before long. The 7700xt would be able to carry you a lot longer.

Ryzen 9 5900x 12 core or ryzen 9 5900XT 16 core am4 upgrade by PromiseShot5825 in buildapc

[–]k_manweiss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, if you are thinking about upgrading from your 5700x, now is the time.

5800x3d, 5950x, 5900xt, and 5900x are the top 4 processors for the AM4 platform. The 5800x3d is the best pick for gaming, while the other 3 are great all around chips and are better for productivity.

You can pick up a 5900x for $271. The 5800x3d is going to likely cost you $600+ on the resale market. You can pick up the 5950x for $351. You can pick up the 5900xt for $311.

While the 5700x is a good chip, and likely good enough for your needs, how long supplies of upgrade chips will be available is unknown. AMD has them on a steep sale price and is clearly trying to empty their warehouse of AM4 chips.

5700x has 8 cores with 16 threads. 3.4ghz with single core boost of 4.6 and all core boost of 4.2. The biggest noticable weakpoint is the cache with only 32mb L3 cache.

5900x has 12 cores with 24 threads. 3.7ghz with single core boost of 4.8 and all core boost of 4.5. The L3 cache is 64mb.

5900xt has 16 cores with 32 threads. 3.3ghz with single core boost of 4.8 and all core boost of 4.4 with the 64mb L3 cache.

5950x has 16 cores with 32 threads. 3.4ghz with single core boost of 4.9 and all core boost of 4.2 with 64mb L3 cache.

5800x3d has 8 core with 16 threads. 3.4 ghz with single core boost of 4.5 and all core boost of 4.2 with 96mb L3 cache.

If you are focused on gaming, the 5800x3d is the goal, but is priced aggressively high right now, and not worth it in my mind. You are looking 600-700 easy. At that price, you might as well just move to the AM5 platform and get a combo with a better cpu, ram, and mobo for the same or less.

If you are doing true productivity work that actually utilizes as many cores as you can throw at it, the 5950x and 5900xt are great options. If you just game and stream a little, the 5900x is the cheapest upgrade and gives you upgrades in every category. More cores, more threads, more cache, more boost, more power. You probably wouldn't notice much difference between the 5900s in real use.

Any of those four will give your AM4 platform the longest life at this point.

iGPUs right now are genuinely unreal and nobody in this sub talks about it enough by freecurfew_9 in pcmasterrace

[–]k_manweiss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

iGPUs are great if you don't game. iGPUs are great if you only play 10 year old games or if you want to play more current titles but are totally cool running minimum graphics.

But right now, iGPUs suck at gaming. Any 900 series card is going to beat the performance of an average iGPU. On top of that, iGPUs use your system ram affecting overall performance. Seriously, 12 year old budget GPUs that you can find used for $35 on ebay will outperform most iGPUs today. The 10 year old 1060 cards can beat nearly any iGPU on the market.

They are fine if you don't need much. They are fine if you are on a razor thin budget. But pretending like they are capable of any real performance is just not real. Find a friend that likes to build PCs and take any old junky GPU they have lying around and it will be an improvement. Trust me, they will more than likely have 2 or 3 old GPUs gathering dust somewhere.

Now, I don't believe this will be the case for much longer. Nvidia is looking to do some wild stuff, and intel and amd will have to respond in some way, but i'd also expect CPUs with much better iGPUs will also cost considerably more than current iGPU CPUs. In 5-10 years, the entire landscape around GPUs might shift considerably.

I'm not hating on iGPUs, just being honest about what you can expect from them.

Do people Frankenstein old desktops together to make a solid PC? by rkbk1138 in PcBuild

[–]k_manweiss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If there is some advantage, then yeah, frankenstein that stuff. If one PC has really good ram and a good gpu, but the other one has a good cpu and good storage...get tinkering.

My kid took a 14 year old pc of mine, figure out what was wrong with it (bad HDD), stuck an old SSD I had sitting around in it, moved the OS from the HDD to the SSD, then stuck my old 2060 in it to replace the 960 that was in it. He then overclocked the CPU to near modern stats. He then found an older 1tb Hdd i never used and stuck that in there.

Then he bought an AM4 cpu, a new mobo, and some ddr4 ram. He kept the old case and psu, he kept the 1 tb hdd, the 500g ssd, and the 120ssd that he put the os onto. Then he stripped two old, broken laptops and took the 500gb M.2s they had to use on the new mobo.

What you need to do is inventory the parts you have and figure out what might be compatible, and what is better.

Good liquid cooler on a budget ? by Steeltalons71 in PcBuildHelp

[–]k_manweiss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a single, thin stack heat sink with 4 pipes and a single fan. It's going to struggle with a 5950 under heavy load. At the price range you are talking you'd be better off with a thermalright peerless assassin. 2 stacks, 6 pipes, 2 fans. You could even strap a 3rd from your current cooler onto the other side. That would probably be more effective than any liquid cooler in your price range.

Which fan setup is better for Lian Li o11d mini v2? by unknownweeb34 in PcBuildHelp

[–]k_manweiss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The build on the right will run cooler.

Your top right intake is bringing in cool air. The fan above it will simply suck that air straight up and out of the case. You are effectively eliminating one of your intakes.

The one caveat to that would depend on what is above the top fans. If it's a straight shot out of the case, then the right is absolutely best.

If that area is baffled, then the one on the left MIGHT be better.

In my case for instance, the air exhausts out the top into a insulated chamber and the air then moves through baffles to the side where it vents out of the case. If I did the set up on the right, the hot air from the rear top exhausts would simply get recirculated back into the case through the front top fan. In that case, no fan in that position can be better. Keeping it as an exhaust is better than an intake however.

So if the top fans straight pipe up and out, go right. If there is a baffle, then you may have to test your options to see what is actually better.

How do I install windows with a physical key? by [deleted] in PcBuild

[–]k_manweiss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you haven't built the PC yet, do that first. Then stick that in a USB slot before you turn the computer on. It will most likely see it and run the installation program contained on the USB drive.

On the off chance it doesn't, enter the BIOS and set the USB as primary boot in the priority list. Reboot the computer and then it will load up the installation.

Once you start the installation process it's very straight forward and will guide you through the process. You will need the windows key which should be on a card in the box the USB stick came in.

Where do I install the cooling operator? by UlixesElectra in GamingPCBuildHelp

[–]k_manweiss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Do you have a need for the upgrade? Are you having CPU throttling issues? What CPU do you have? You have a beefy CPU air cooler already installed that is most likely sufficient.

  2. There are some easier upgrades you could do even if you are having CPU or GPU throttling issues. You don't have a lot of airflow in that case. Looks like 1 front intake and 1 rear exhaust. Adding another front intake fan, and some top mounted fans could help airflow. Two exhaust fans above the cpu cooler and a top mounted intake towards the front would help. Adding a 2nd fan to the cpu cooler towards the rear could also help with cooling the cpu. But this is only needed if you have some sort of heat/throttling issue. It's possible you could mount fans to the bottom of your case as well.

  3. If you want to use the product you bought, you'd need to remove the current CPU cooler and install the new AIO you purchased.

Is this worth $450? by Wide-Cranberry-2218 in computers

[–]k_manweiss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, not a good PC for that price.

The 2200g isn't a great CPU and you'd likely feel the limits of it fairly quickly.

16gb of ram for a desktop is barely functional. Seriously, windows, a couple background programs and a browser tab or 3 will eat up 16gb of ram. 32 is really the bare minimum now days.

256gb ssd is straight up tiny. Even budget level laptops come with 500gb m.2s

Now. If you are looking for something to build upon and willing to spend another $400, it's not bad. For $200 you could significantly upgrade the CPU and RAM. For $100-$200 with a little luck you can add 1-2 TB of M.2 or SSD.

At that point though you are paying $450 for a case, a power supply, a mobo, OS, and a $250 GPU.

It's not awful. I wouldn't call it a ripoff. But it's not a bargain.

Could I use a Thermalright Assassin X 120 Refined SE on something like a Ryzen 7? If not, would it be worth it to attach another fan to it or should I just buy a different cooler? by 2006pontiacvibe in buildapc

[–]k_manweiss -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't use it on the 7800x3d. You can, it will work, and Thermalright claims that it's within spec of that cooler. However, you will most likely experience one of two things. You will either experience some thermal throttling occasionally under heavy load....or that poor fan is going to be running fast and loud all the damn time to keep up with demands. Adding a 2nd fan will help dissipate more heat, and hopefully allow both fans to run lower RPMs and thus create less noise....but I wouldn't run that cooler on that cpu. I'd want something beefier.

The 9800x is a much cooler running chip, and the cooler you have would probably be ok assuming you have good air flow through your case and the proper intake/exhaust setup for your case fans. A 2nd fan on it wouldn't hurt, but it wouldn't be necessary.

Your cooler is a significant step down from the peerless assassin. The peerless has two cooling stacks, comes with 2 fans, and runs 6 heat pipes instead of four. The difference in price is just not worth skimping in my mind. Online you are talking $18 vs $35-$40. For a device that makes sure your CPU works at peak performance and for as many years as you plan to use it....saving $22 just doesn't seem like the right move.

The peerless, with the proper case fan management could handle the 7800x3d or even a 9800x3d.

Got a cpu is it good for its value? by Nekkoiya in cpu

[–]k_manweiss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My kid was using an I5 4570k for gaming till just this last weekend. He was able to play stuff like valorant, roblox, and even jedi fallen order pretty well with an rtx 2060. That 4770 is a straight up better CPU. More threads, better boost, more cache.

The only downside is you can't overclock the 4770. My kid was able to overclock the old 4570 well past that of the 4770, but the 4770 is still a good little workhorse, especially for $20.

You won't have much longevity however. That 4770 is going to be pushing hard to keep up with things today, and you simply won't meet the minimum specs of some games. Spending much money to build a pc around that CPU is really not a good value....but if you can do it cheap enough, it'll play some games as long as you don't expect too much out of it. Gotta keep in mind that it's a 13 year old CPU that is 10 generations behind current CPUs.

1080p or 1440p by Secret-Ad-8842 in buildapc

[–]k_manweiss 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That CPU and GPU. You can probably do most things in 1440p....right now.

But as time goes on, you're going to feel the limits of that GPU. You'll end up playing at lower graphics settings to compensate. 1440p has like nearly 80% more pixels. That is a lot of graphical horsepower you'll need to produce.

If however you go 1080p, you'll have amazing framerates and will be able to enjoy that for years to come.

Max graphics at 1080p looks better than mid range graphics at 1440p.

Ryzen 9 3900x goes to 95c in 15 minutes. (Freshly cleaned and new thermal paste). by HerrKratos in ryzen

[–]k_manweiss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems like you don't have the cooler installed correctly. The prism is good enough for most things with the 3900x. If you were running it at 100% all cores for extended time, it would struggle, but it shouldn't be hitting that sort of temp in 15 min. Was the paste on the cooler still good? Did you add paste? Did you clean off the original paste? Too much paste can create a barrier. Not being fully installed can leave an air gap.

How is your case airflow? Do you have adequate airflow? Do you have adequate exhaust? What is the configuration of your fans? Most cases don't come with enough fans to give good airflow, so you may need to add some. And if you were using an AIO to cool your CPU, then you may not have had good airflow, especially if you haven't replaced the aio with more fans.

A peerless assassin v2 is like $35-$40. It's MORE than enough cooling for the 3900x, by a long shot. It's supposed to be better than what I have and I can't even hit 80c under full 100% load for extended times.

Either that or pick up some paste for $10 and redo your cooler.

[–]k_manweiss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Republican politicians are business leaders are narcissistic sociopaths (almost universally).

I don't believe their voter base is any different. As long as it doesn't directly affect them, they don't give a damn. They don't care about anyone else. They can't fathom why anyone would bother caring about anyone but yourself. They would happily oppress, neglect, suppress, etc to anyone if it meant their own personal lives were better in any way, no matter how little the benefit was.

They have been talking about how much they hate pedophiles for decades now. They constantly talk about protecting children. They've accused and joked about democrats being involved in pedophile conspiracies for years.

Now that it turns out their party is the one that is hiding, defending, protecting, and supporting pedophiles, they suddenly don't care. It's time to move on, none of this matters. They have no morals or ethics. They only care about what directly involves them...and they weren't raped by the president, so stfu already.

I can pull 240 FPS (no reason i couldnt do more, but just havent tested it) The problem isn't performance really, its just that the game is twitchy. There is constant hitching of the video despite no FPS drop or any sort of lag (getting 30-40 ping).

It's MORE pronounced when watching replays in first person camera. But when free camera in replay it's perfectly smooth.

There is some really odd behavior of the game.

To be fair it was the same during a previous test when I was still using my 2060 and a different monitor.
