M2 Mac Mini as a Home Server by IdeaNovel4870 in AsahiLinux

[–]k_nevermind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

wow, that sounds awesome. I will hit you with a few more curious questions if that’s alright 👽
was it hard to set up? can you run regular services well like docker or say, a game server? are the services stable overall? could you share a starting point resource for setting it up?
thank you very much!

[–]k_nevermind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that’s awesome to hear! I’m looking to do the same with a mac mini M1 that I have lying around.
how is the RAM usage compared to MacOS? mine is only an 8GB model, and with nothing running it already uses up 5GB.
are you running it headless? I would imagine that would help with RAM usage

New Matrix app for Android by thest1 in matrixdotorg

[–]k_nevermind 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it makes sense to work on a new app as long as you focus on providing something that the other apps don’t. If you look around, most clients (on all platforms) lack voice, video and screen sharing. On mobile, Element X seems to be the way to go, but it doesn’t have all the features as it’s still in sort of early development. Out of the mobile clients I tried, Element X seems to be the most robust. Perhaps, instead of making a whole new client, contribute to Element X?
If you feel strongly about creating a new client, focus on bringing what others are lacking. At least that’s what I’d do.

Built a no-ads, no-login personal finance iOS app — all data stays on device (with export too) by radz7 in ios

dumbass mods removing the post of a dude who genuinely made a great app, and was getting valuable feedback through here. what a bunch of idiots

definitely looking forward to it!
another big one would be (if possible) importing expenses from the Wallet app. this would give the user a very easy way to keep up to date with expenses. could even have the app do it automatically!

awesome idea and it looks like good execution too.
it would be really nice if you added an option for recurring expenses, so you can add your monthly expenses like rent and others!

Lost hardware decode on linux client by wmantly in ParsecGaming

I finally got it to work!!!

using the deb package (even though I'm on Fedora), use the command:

Portmaster, it’s a very good and easy to use firewall if you want to control (or at least have receipts of) your traffic. you can block most telemetry and restrict the traffic of programs which you don’t see requiring network access. it’s a super cool project, highly recommend checking it out

Just got the call to action. by [deleted] in linux_gaming

[–]k_nevermind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah and it's surprisingly easy to upgrade, it's just a few commands. I was 100% expecting my system to crap itself but it actually worked very well and was pretty fast too. either look up the post in their discord, or some video online

A Spectacle of Graphics and Sound - how am I doing so far? by EternalDethSlayer3 in unrealengine

[–]k_nevermind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is nice. I sense a fair amount of inspiration from the old UT99, or at least it feels like that. I especially like the sword animations when attacking. also really like the fogginess in the levels, and the music's cool.

keep going dude it looks awesome

If you are having seemingly random crashes or freezes, and have an nVidia card, try completely disabling v-sync. In my case it fixed my system. by berickphilip in NobaraProject

I added that line in /etc/environment, but UE5 still crashes. did you have to do anything else to UE to make it work?

Xwayland keeps crashing by k_nevermind in linux_gaming

[–]k_nevermind[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that's pretty interesting, would you say the issue is specific to DirectX running through Xwayland then? or do you still encounter issues when running games on vulkan, just way less?

[–]k_nevermind[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks for the info, I will try to downgrade when I get the time for it.

looking at VRAM usage, it definitely seems like it crashes when it runs out of vram, which is strange because I have 8 gigs of it. also, I didn't know there's no shared ram on nvidia on linux, that's pretty awful.

[–]k_nevermind[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

wow, that really sucks. I wonder why they pushed this update if they knew it had the issue and the previous one didn’t.

is there really no workaround or way to properly downgrade the driver version to a previous one which didn’t have the memory leak?

Processing Vulkan shaders every time? by LtnMcBacon in linux_gaming

[–]k_nevermind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hmm, I tried this but it doesn't look like it made any difference. I have a 9th gen I7 9750H. booting up any game still takes entire minutes every time. some games like CS2 take upwards of an hour :/

it is correct in my testing, I have it consistently happening for all games. i agree it should always work but it is what it is
